Stuck in Flight School -- Can't fly helicopter

I stole an air ambulance and can drive that fairly well but when I go to flight school I can't finish the helicopter segment. I finished the course 3 times but was too slow.

 

I believe that I can't proceed with the next heist (not online mode) until Michael gets certified. If this is incorrect let me know and I'll just practice more with the ambulance.

 

Can you offer some hints on finishing this course?

I think you could skip a lesson or two and still pass, all you need is to max out Michael's flying. But you can skip flying school all together with the consequence being the heist being a bit more difficult.

Well... One time I didn't make the flight lessons, and I could play the mission anyway. It isn't very relevant.

This might be a stupid question... but do you know that you can rotate the helicopter with the rudder by using R1/L1? (or the bumpers on Xbox controller)

I believe you can do the heist without doing the flight school at all, because there is specific dialogue depending on whether you did the flight school or not. Hope this helps!
