R9 280 GB vs GTX 960 4GB?

Recommended Posts

Well, I'm gonna get a new GPU, and according to the Swedish tech forum Sweclockers, they claim a R9 280 3GB is better at handling VRAM and all that stuff then a GTX 960 4GB, which is just a robbery and performs like sh*t.

Is this true? Which should I pick?

Edit: I f*cked up the title. Sorry.

Do you mean 280 or 280X? The 280X is more expensive but about 15% better in games. The 960 is generally considered very bad value. It doesn't "performs like sh*t", it's just overpriced. Not sure what you mean by "better at handling VRAM", but if playing at 1080p 3GB will last a long time.

I don't know. I'm tired. Sorry.

TBH I wouldn't consider GTX960 as that bad value, seeing as you get Batman Arkham Knight for free (in select shops & countries)

Well I'm not interested in that game and I just wanna know which is best performance wise/most performance out of the money.

You should check out r9 290s used and see how expensive they are compared to the 280(x) and gtx 960 new. At least here they can be found for about $210 used, which is about the same price as a gtx 960/280x and it smokes both of them.

A used HD 7950 might also be a good choice, it is pretty much an r9 280 and can usually be found for really cheap used these days.

I'm not going for a 290 since they're way to big for my case.

280, 280X, 290, 290X are the same length. Chances are if you managed to fit a 280, it'll fit a 290. Both cards are 10.5", well, unless if you bought an ITX card.

Also, I'd suggest looking for a cheap 4GB R9 285. It trades blows with the 960, unless if the game is heavily optimized for NVIDIA.
