Better TV-Channel Switching Mod

Recommended Posts

truthy

Hi there,

I just recently created my own vids and replaced them with the longer ones ingame. The problem is that when I want to watch them, I have to turn on the tv and switch to either WZL or CNT, and wait for what seems like forever, even watch 2-4 commercials in between, until my next custom clip comes up. From what I could determine, it's completely random which wzl or cnt clip comes up next (not depending on the time of day like when the 3 cinema movies are shown). Advancing a few hours and switching back and forth is also not really working. So I'd like to make a TV-Mod, which switches between each tv-clip (bik-video) instead of the entire channel.

Do any of you know if that's even possible and if so, which files to alter? I could imagine it may work via writing a script and mapping it to an unused keyboard key for example. Any help would be highly apreciated. Also I'd like to know if it's possible to remove the runtime restriction on the bik-files: if they'r longer than the original, they just get cut off.

This is interesting. I did not see any other references to the .bik files in OpenIV as to a way to control playback and so forth.

I do have the encoder for the .bik files - what settings did you use?

Almost the same settings as the original bik files. I found them on a chinese forum (and if you open the originals in rad --> file info)

For tv-clips: 640x360, 29.970fps, max. bit/datarate 400000, audio 22050

And for the 3 theater-movies you can even go as high as 720p/544p: 1x 1280x720, 2x 1280x544, 29.970fps, max. bit/datarate 800000, audio 22050

Maybe you can use the hd-settings for the tv-files to, but then you would have to convert or replace all the commercials as well, otherwise there would be playback issues. Same goes for the video framerate.

1080p-biks crash the game for me (altough they do play!). Originally I tried a slightly higher tv-clip resolution 720x400, but even if they show up sometimes, half of the time you just get a black screen. The better the source, the better the final quality of course: I used a professional video-editing software to cut the files down to excatly the same length (to the second) exported them lossless and with the right resolution/framerate, and then let rad convert them to bik. But you can also convert almost anything directly with rad - with hese settings:

frame-rate control: adjust 29.970, 640x360 under scaling type AND frame size cropping, video rate 400000, audio rate 22050

it does resize before cropping if your source isn't 16/9.

For anyone who wants to do this him/herself - here's a complete list of all replaceable biks ingame. most of them are in x64d.rpf\movies and the dlc ones are in update\x64\dlcpacks\patchday3ng\dlc.rpf\x64\movies + a good tutorial on howto replace them without messing up the originals: OpenIV-TUT - but believe me, if you replace so many vids OpenIV always messes some up that won't play ("This is not a bik file"), even if you rebuild right after editing/replacing - just rinse and repeat until all replaced ones work in OpenIV & therefore ingame.

Still now I have all these great vids that play perfectly, but I can't switch to them ingame ... as far as I know, switching to a specific point inside a bik file ingame will not work, but switching to the next one might. Can you point me in the right direction on where to look and for what to make that happen?

Oddly enough, there is a tvplaylists.xml in GTAV --> common.rpf --> data.

There is a root <CTVPlaylistContainer> and three children <Videos>, <PlayListSlots>, and <Playlists>. The <PlayListSlots> block is more of a "reference" to the <Videos> items. The xml block of interest would be <Playlists>.

I've modified the first two items as I believe they are the standard channels you would watch when sitting on the couch:

      <TVPlayListSlotNames>
invader0
      </TVPlayListSlotNames>

      <TVPlayListSlotNames>
WZL9
      </TVPlayListSlotNames>

I just tested this now but the playlists did not change. They still play the original content. Must be something else controlling the TV behavior.

Let me know what you find.

I make a Mod with this but i got the same Question. Let me know if you find something to make the Videos longer.

If you look at the tvplaylists.xml, there is a duration value for each clip. Its not a value that makes sense with current time units. You have to divide the value by ~30 to get the seconds. Very weird.

I still have not solved the issue with the playlist, they still show the default playlist - even when I force it to one clip in the playlist. I will continue looking.

Ok, finally got this to work. I forgot to check update.rpf --> common --> data. There is a tvplaylists_x64.xml as well. I changed both just in case.

I am now able to change the playlists as I wish - like the lifeinvader head explode clip

MwtSY.jpg

  <Playlists>

      <TVPlayListSlotNames>
invader0
      </TVPlayListSlotNames>

Most likely, you can change the clip lengths as you wish (even add more clips to the archives).

Confirmed that you can edit the clip lengths. Still unsure what the exact numbers are as they are dependent on the exact frame count and frame rate. Not home right now but this is of some interest as perhaps we can have TV billboards - if a modification for it ever comes out.

Edit:

Actually, something does exist:

GRAPHICS::DRAW_TV_CHANNEL

but some more research is needed on this front. The entry on AB's native DB has some unknowns.

I dont really understand how to change the clip length. Can you explain me this more please?

I believe the value is (# of seconds) * 29.97. The thing to keep in mind is the # of seconds needs to be exact. You can't just round the # of seconds, you need it to be frame accurate timing converted to seconds (a float value - accurate to 6 decimal points).

Edit:

So I tested again today to add new clips to the movies folder and there were no ill effects to the game. This is great that we can add our own clips without removing/replacing the originals. Just make sure you have the names correct as you reference them in the tvplaylists.xml as well as accurate clip duration.

In regards to the clip length, be sure not to go beyond what the actual length of the video as it may cause the channel to stop functioning after the clip plays until EOF.

thx for all the research effort. :^:

what I still don't get is how they arrived at the fDuration value. let's take CNT_Moorehead for example:

13m23s = 803s * 29.970 = 24065.91 but the xml duration is slightly higher: 24103.103516 - that's about 1,2 seconds more (804.241025)

the total framecount actually is: 24079/29.970 = 803.436770 - and if you count it like that, it's still 0,8 seconds longer

... so is it the other way around - your referenced clip length should be ~ 1 second longer than the actual one? Maybe that's where the 1 Second Black Bik comes into play ...

so theoretically you could add a clip with any duration? my new max duration would only be about 20-40 minutes - who would want to watch that long anyway.

I'm gonna test adding new clips tomorrow. If it works I could place my clips at the beginning of the playlist. what i also don't get is what the playlist name PL_LO is good for as you already have 2 standard playlists (PL_STD_WZL/PL_STD_CNT) SP stands for singleplayer & MP for multiplayer. Did you edit wzl/cnt standard slot name list with your new clip name or can you create a new one?

But still, there is no way to switch between all of the vids - you'd still have to wait (but not as long as before and without the commercials)

Yeah, the math is a bit fuzzy... Theoretically, adding a clip of any length is possible. The only playlists that I am aware of are the STD playlists. The other ones may pertain to other TV sets in the GTA V world (not sure which). When I added my clip, I made my own slot as a test. The tvplaylists.xml is pretty non-restrictive, at least in my tests. Really, the sky is the limit on what you can add here.

mhm, I can't get this to work. interestingly with the cinema movies there's no problem - just tested a 30 & 40 min video, both play until the end. but if I use the same files for the tv channels they'r stuck/won't play properly. I even used a new slot and name. the only thing I can think of, is that the fDuration value must be different ... some of these seem quite strange. if you did use the same filename as the original you would have to replace the original vids as well. (unless you use a mods folder)

EDIT: Using a new cinema movie with any clip-length is pretty easy now. All you have to do is add you new clip to x64d.rpf/movies and then edit all 3 playlist.xmls. You only have to edit the Videos part of Movie_Cartoon/Arthouse/Action for the Cinema-Vids with your new VideoFileName and fDuration value. Example for a clip named mycustomclipname_1.bik with about 30min, 53940 frames and 29.970fps (rad file info!): 53940*29.970=1616581.8 but as it has to have 6 decimal points: 1616581.800000

  <Videos>

      <VideoFileName>MYCUSTOMCLIPNAME_1</VideoFileName>      <fDuration value="1616581.800000" />      <bNotOnDisk value="false" />

      <VideoFileName>MYCUSTOMCLIPNAME_2</VideoFileName>      <fDuration value="2108389.500000" />      <bNotOnDisk value="false" />

      <VideoFileName>MYCUSTOMCLIPNAME_3</VideoFileName>      <fDuration value="21184.183594" />      <bNotOnDisk value="false" />
  </Videos>

what I don't get is why the same entries won't work for tv ... maybe there have to be at least 2 slots in PL_STD_CNT/WZL. also although cnt0 & wzl0 should be the first to play on either list they don't all the time - for me for example most of the time when I switch on wzl the first clip is from the dlc (cnt_pbr2=originally princess robot bubblegum) ...

Thanks man. So the way to make the Videos longer is to change the

<fDuration Value="Frames*FPSToDecimal" />

?

right, like i wrote in the example. but if you get an even result you'll have to add some zeros because of the 6 decimal points: 53940*29.970=1616581.8-->1616581.800000

idk if you meant it like that but yes. fDuration=Frames*FPS (with 6 decimal points)

I assume we could pretty much put a whole new TV channel to the game, eh? Or are they just restricted/hardcoded to just a few predefined ones?

I think it seems like it may have the same issue as sound modding, which I'm heavily involved in; the game engine "expects" certain factors of filetypes. With sounds, it's filesizes. If a filesize exceeds expected limits, sounds universally break. Maybe the issues with TV channels are caused by video files exceeding specified limits/sizes in the vanilla version of the game?

I don't doubt we can get some successful TV mods up, and with GTA V modding still in its infancy we've got a lot of time for modding progress. However, I think it'll be more difficult than just replacing video files. How was it done in IV? I know of a few TV channel mods that worked relatively well there, and maybe there are similarities in how it's done.

Seems to be restricted to those two channels. But you can add your own video in there then append it to the main STD playlists. There are other playlists but they may be mission or location dependent.

@Truthy

HEY! It's me... same guy from the GTA5 Nexus, the original creator of "Adult TV for GTA5" (which was banned as well as myself from the nexus) Sorry I could never get you the backup files before I got banned. Anyways, can you send PM's on here at all? Can't figure out how. New to this site. I was never able to get the files you uploaded for me either, was about to get them and send u links for backups but when I went to get on the messaging system I found that the nazi admins on the nexus banned me already! They f*cked me over. GRRRR!!!!!!!

Anyhow, truthy... could you post my idea I sent to you in the nexus message regarding the tv channels mod that would add more channels? I forget my ideas and need to refer back to them so I can start attempting to add another channel or two and see if I can make it happen. Really want to mess around and make this thing happen! NEED A BREAK FROM THE WITCHER 3 LOL! Thanks in advance!

@abrakadabra1981

I read your other message - check your email. Be careful not to get banned here too ... it might be a good idea to edit your posts a bit.

I just deleted the Conversation on the Nexus, sry. But as fas as I can remember you wanted to start a very comprehensive project with multiple tv-channels for sports, gta-related movies, oldies, action, adult, commercials etc. ... making those videos isn't the problem. Getting them do display correctly on ingame-tv is. I still have two to edit for myself, then I'm gonna try again. the good thing is, that I already made vids with exactly the same runtime as the originals - and they all play fine ingame, so even if the longer ones only work in the cinema I can sort and replace all the others.

Is it just me, or do you also have trouble correctly adding/replacing biks in x64d.rpf with OpenIV? If I try adding multiple biks at once, only the first 2 work correctly, with all the others the filesize is correct, but the beginning of the hex code doesn't show the correct "BIKi" entry and therefore if you try to play them you get "Not a Bink File". I just tried with the latest OpenIV version (2.6.4 Build 641) - no change.

But I think I finally found a way to add all new files correctly ... but it's very annoying:

1. Start with the Original x64d.rpf (in mods folder!!!) and add 1 new file at a time

2. After adding the file rebuild the archive & close it (Strg F4)

3. Open it again and right-click & replace the new file then close it again

4. Now it should have been replaced correctly - if not replace/close/open/play it unitl it works

5. Repeat the Procedure for all new files and at the end if all work correctly rebuild the archive again to lower the filesize

Update: Crap. No that doesn't work either. Rebuilding messed up the already correctly replaced vids ... I'm gonna try adding them all at once and then replacing them one by one manually ... OpenIV Bugreports: link

Yes we do. Unfortunately, I can't even register to submit a bugreport (no confirmation mail) - I sent one per email with no response so far ... maybe you can try?

It's not only the 'rebuilding-issue', simply adding new biks also corrupts the hex-values all the time. The last time it took me hours of adding/rebuilding/replacing biks over & over again until all finally worked. Only adding them without rebuilding leads to the rpf-archive getting bigger & bigger every time and as my files are quite a lot bigger than yours 160mb-2200mb, that's no solution and it also doesn't work. OpenIV corrupts small files as well as big ones so that's not it either ...

EDIT:

Just sent a Message to GooD-NTS on gtaforums - if he finds the time he'll hopefully fix it in the next version.

Just wanted to show you guys what I have been working on.

It's called "Weazel After Dark" and so far I have all commercials replaced for WZL. I am kind of stuck as far as what to do with this. I was thinking I could do either....

1. Replace all videos for WZL and have it just be a "nothing but xxx" tv channel

2. Just have the WZL After Dark commercials and videos play after a certain time in game, like after 9pm in-game, but how do I know what plays during that time in-game??? Also I am horrible with adding NEW tv content without replacing them and I am horribly bad at editing the xml playlist files. Anyone want to join my mod that is really good at this?

Another thought... Are all the tv shows/commercials all on a time schedule with the in-game time? If this is so, then is it safe to say it is impossible to add more content to the tv channels without replacing vanilla content? Or... is it say... "40 min worth of in-game tv" compared to let's say, "1 hour day to night (24hrs in-game time)"???? If that is the case then we would have an extra 20 min worth of content we could add right??? If anyone can post more info on tv-time (time it takes to play all channel has to offer) and in-game time (time it takes for 1am to hit 1am in-game time) Hmm..... This is why I was always a creative director rather than technical on mods. I did all voice acting, character creation, station creation and art creation for Fallout New Vegas's mod "Old World Radio" This is why I need someone's help to make WEAZEL AFTER DARK truly wonderful. I can make the art, the logo vids, and get the best content for it but need someone to help me edit timeframe of vids to match the runtime of the vanilla vid, and/or write up the .xml playlists if it is possible to just add them and not delete any vanilla video files.

Anyways here is a little taste of the commercial replacements for you all. HOPE YOU LIKE THE CUSTOM "WEAZEL After Dark" OPENING! :D

...for some reason it plays in low-res on that link, but it is in hd. Just download and see. I have the bik version too if you want to play around with it. Just ask.

Tell me what you guys think and if you would be interested in getting in on this with me. I want to make it awesome.

EDIT- Okay here are all of them besides one. Made replacements for 7 of the 8 commercials shown on weazel. Maybe someone can trim them up to the same size of the vanilla commercials they are replacing? I notice vanilla shows will overlap them if they are too long. anyways here is the link. Just unzip.

Nice work! The biks should work perfectly ingame. What did you use to Overlay the logo at the bottom right of the trailers?

One suggestion though: raise the audio volume of all your biks to 96bB, because otherwise they'll be far to quiet ingame (compared to the original vids).

You can do that very quickly from your finished biks. Extract the Audio from the biks to wav using rad. Convert the wav-files to mp3 160 kbit cbr (with eg. lame frontend). Load them into mp3gain do a track analysis and raise the volume to 96dB with track gain - nevermind the clipping, you won't hear it anyway. open rad again, select your bik --> mix in sound --> select your gained mp3-audio --> add to batch. finished. Here's a Screenshot. If you don't want to raise it, apply the standard volume gain of 89dB to all your biks so that they all have the same volume. then change the sound-settings ingame - but believe me, gaining them is better. I did the same for all my custom ingame music (with a slightly lower volume).

If there is any relation between the ingame time and the television-clips shown would also interest me, but as far as I understood it, for tv it's just a playlist, in which the files are listed und played one after another ... but I could be wrong. The 3 cinema vids are definitely ingame-time related.

Adding files without altering the originals is already possible: just use new filenames. In fact GooD-NTS got back to me and cleared a few things up, as I had trouble adding/replacing biks with OpenIV. As I suspected, there is RPF-Archive Filesize Limit of 4GB. If your altered archive gets bigger, some files get corrupted - no way around that and also no OpenIV bug. Alternatively one could just create new x64*.rpf archives with your custom clips inside (eg. x64x.rpf x64y.rpf x64z.rpf). I'm gonna do some testing to see if and how that would work ...

Concerning the XML-edits: for the 3 cinema vids everything works perfectly (unlimited clip length, new filenames - no replacing the originals). For the TV-Playlist XMLs it's still very confusing for me - but now that all my clips are finished I'm also gonna test that.

But for the one thing I really wanted to know when I started this thread: "Alter GTAV somehow (eg. with an unassigned keyboard key), so that one could switch between all your custom tv-bik files and not the entire cnt/wzl-channel" there's still zero progress. The greatest vids are useless if you have to wait up to 15 minutes ingame (or in my case up to an hour) to see the next one. Any ideas/suggestions/tipps on howto achieve that?
