Our parents didn't have much access to information about the cities that they haven't been to. Nor did they have enough information on how to start a new business. They were just trained in school and in universities to work for someone else. They were lucky if they had successful parents who could teach them. I can imagine that moving to a different city was more like exploring to the unknown when compared to how it is today. So a lot of the parents didn't venture far. Today, we can plan ahead with online maps that contain images of every single road. For me, traveling internationally is as easy as traveling domestically. They didn't have the internet to browse economic information such as the employment rate, average income and the real estate prices. A lot of the biographies of the successful people that I read weren't printed yet in 1999. I'd have an unfair advantage if I went back in time. I'd invest in cheap lands and stocks that would rise in value later on. There are some things that I did right such as eating healthily and having enough exercise. I never smoked so I never got addicted to it. I traveled to many countries during my college vacations. I don't think I'd have enough time to travel to those places when I get a job. Now, a lot of the opportunities that existed during 1999 are gone due to competition. I'd have to search really far for an opportunity. Most people would stop terrific things from happening but i think we needed those things to happen to grow closer as a nation and a world. I remember seeing her on total request live not long before her death. I was gutted when I heard the news. I mean, you could bet on the right sports teams, sure. You could predict a few things and wow your friends and family. But the utter futility of it boils down to the fact that you're still You, no one will believe you (imagine how it'd go if you tried to prevent 9/11... Would you take it seriously? Would anyone? If you showed Apple designs for something they hadn't released yet - let's just forget that it's 1999 and you somehow need to get your foot in the door of one of the world's largest companies - they'd assume you somehow stole it. All's I'm saying is that you'd have a lot of tough uphill battles. The fantasy that you could somehow make drastic world changes in the past with a little bit of information usually precludes the fact that the time traveller lacks the skills to bring these things to fruition - or he'd be doing it today. Personally, and this is just me, but I wouldn't enjoy seeing my mum naked below the waist with a bloody gory mess coming out of her you know what. I mean what's next, going back further and witnessing your conception? No tyvm. I'd go to NY on 9/11 with a high quality camera and get a good angle and view on the first plane, and sell that sh*t for $$$, then (when I'm already well known thanks to my l33t video skills and "lucky timing") I'd start a blog and make loads of smart insightful commentary like "Well I think this will lead to the U.S. bombing and invading, probably with a coalition of allies, Afghanistan" and "Even though I think Iraq was not involved, it will give the Bush administration the impetus to also invade them, probably under the guise of the possession of WMD's, which will ultimately be proven false." And then later after those invasions I'll be all "Well the coalition partners could also likely suffer terror attacks in their own countries as a result of increased domestic radicalisation". Basically just this uber successful rich analyst who is on the ball on foreign affairs and such. Then everyone will think I'm infallible and right about everything. I'll start making slightly out there comments and statements, which would normally raise some eyebrows but because it's the guy who's always right about everything they just lap it up. I start pushing the boundaries more and more but still the majority go along with it. At this point I'm also stinking rich thanks to investing in apple and google and facebook, twitter etc. I also have massive power and influence in these companies as well as an impressive number of other media outlets that I outright own, e.g. some newspapers and TV and radio stations. I use these resources, the massive media influence and large public backing to run for PM. Obviously I landslide, breaking all records. Then I further push the personality cult and centralise power in my hands. Turn country into dictatorship, use massive power and influence, subvert other European governments. Europe is now mine, U.S. soon follows. Now I'm untouchable and start a 1000 year reich. Feels good man.
