Happy Holidays from the GTANet team!

To you, what makes the perfect GTA Protag?

I've read a lot of love for Niko Bellic. I've read a fair amount of love for Trevor Phillips, I don't understand why but an opinion regardless.

To you what makes a pure protagonist, molded for the Grand Theft Auto crime realm? Be at your liberty to express your opinion.

To me, a person who is relentless to achieving their one desire. Overcoming all obstacles and ruthless through and through.

IMO it's overcoming all the odds, showing loyalty to those close to them and never giving up no matter how sh*t things get. That's why Niko's an amazing protagonist to me.

Niko Bellic. Lock Thread. ;)

Seriously, I reckon he has the necessary qualities to be the best Protagonist.

What makes a perfect protagonist is that he is somewhat a force to be reckoned with.

A perfect Anti-Hero if you will, because we like him but in the game alot of people hate him, and you have the choice to make him pure evil too. Just someone who doesn't whine, get's the job done without talking too much, someone who can plan something carefully and doing it like a badass, someone like that.

I still don't think we have gotten a protagonist like that.

Niko is the perfect GTA protagonist. He really is special from the time we were introduced to him. He has all the characteristics of a protagonist should be. He is kind, loyal, never gives up to suffer just for people that are close to him. Just don't get on his bad side, or you are gonna have a very bad day. He is a man who relishes his mistakes for revenge. He may be a bit cold, but deep inside him, he just wants to be a normal guy trying to forget is cold and dark past. He is the most human protagonist I have ever encountered in a video game. He never acted like a lifeless cartoon character ala Trevor. He can be relatable, or a character that you feel really sorry at the same time.

I think the best protagonists are those who:

-are badass thugs, but not insane killing machines

-despite being violent criminals are still likeable and maybe even a little relateable

-can get any job done, but are still loyal to their friends and allies and wouldn´t turn against them

-preferably has at least some character customization

My favorite protagonist in the whole series was Tommy Vercetti, and I also liked Niko,Johnny,CJ and maybe some others.

Gameplay wise, how it used to be in the 3D era; simple.

I find the idea of enjoying a protagonist to be more compelling through how you indulge yourself in myriad activities and open world challenges available to explore on your own, without the game holding your hands way too much, like almost every AAA title does, as in, catering with all sorts of features simply adopted to make the all sort of exploration kind of easy for the casuals, feeling no sense of wonder about the world!

I remember when I started playing GTA SA there was nothing to tell me about the map nor massive open world details. It made me more invested to study the characters, the areas, the various interesting interactions with peds, and lots of various other bits around CJ, in order to gather more about him making it more fun to play. If I'm going to "role play" any protagonist then I'd much prefer that the game leaves me on my own imagination, with no internet, police database files, lifeinvader, news, phone messages, and other artificial, gimmicky bullsh*t thrown to give him an interesting touch, personality, or whatever. It should be rather done by giving you better things to invest yourself beyond just reading texts and get to explore the adventure through interesting objectives, missions, etc using the potential of the sandbox around him.

Look at the designers of the older game like Ultima series, Baldurs gate, and many others, giving you complete freedom to explore the protagonis with no clue what they have created for you within the next 200 hours long journey full of choices and consequences.

Today, the experience has gradually shifted into forcing myself into investing more time with a protagonist that feels like more of a machine in control of the developers, than someone I am supposed to control and find out more about him.

So yeah, something more like the good old 3D era protagonists, and even more wonderful to experience the GTA 2 character, too!

Storywise, I am fine with any good adventure, be serious or not, if that fits all the roleplay ideas, as explained above, as best as possible!

I pretty much like all the major protagonists, except Luis. But to me, Claude, Tommy and Michael were all flawless.
