Because he is a loving father, and he likes his family even though they're are annoying. I think Micheal might have gone ALL in on the criminality since he has nothing to lose anymore. So Micheal would probally build the De Santa Mafia. It would be cool to have some kind of mafia related to Micheal, even though he is not italian nor mexican. He has ties to Carlos ofc. Micheal is already depressed as it is, an event like that would probably break him, he'd likely be done with the criminal lifestyle as well, if he doesn't kill himself. That would cause serious issues with both Gameplay and the Main Storyline. Not saying Micheal going full Max Payne wouldn't be badass, but still. In many ways, DeNiro's character in that film is what partially inspired Michael's in GTA V. They are very similar. Anyway, in Heat, DeNiro has a saying, that is basically "never get too attached to anything that you can't walk away from if the heat is on your back" or something like that. He lives by the rule that you never fall in love or get too close to anyone because it makes it hard to conduct the criminal life if your feelings get in the way. So I think, if Michael's family were lost, he would be full of sorrow and mourn them for awhile, but then he would turn into a darker character. He would become very bitter and vengeful, possibly seeking revenge at all costs. The humor we see in Michael now would be gone after that. Otherwise, he could've just fled like Trevor did, after the heist in NY. He's a nervous wreck. He's already tried therapy, the bottle, pills and yoga.
