"Run N Gun" playstyle ?

A new "fad" in deathmatches i've come across is players who insist on playing "Run and Gun". This is very prevalent when we try to perform head to head crew battles against other crews. I've learnt "Run and Gun" isn't just that map with little cover and terrible spawns, it's actually a playstyle where you are not allowed to go into cover (press R1 on PS) , go onto rooftops (they say it's camping) , stay in one spot for more then 5 seconds (camping?), use BF helmets (I guess this is understandable), only Assault Rifles/MG's,Pistols. No marksmen rifle, no sniper rifles, and of course no mini-guns or RPG'S.

Essentially, what ends up happening is a pack of players running in groups of 5, running around corners together, and hoping to time their combat rolls perfectly. The bigger pack usually wins. The most bizzare thing about this is that they insist on playing Auto-aim.

This playstyle is becoming more and more common as I play more deathmatches. People are 100% free to play this game anyway they wish, and I have no huge problem with it usually, as we can just leave the lobby, or decline the crew battle. But we honestly feel like it's gone to far at this point. The problem with this is how controlling this playstyle has become, and if you're not a "Run and Gun" connoisseur then you are ridiculed for not playing the game the way they want it to be played, to the very last detail.

In summary, this Run and Gun playstyle is making it difficult for crew battles to happen, as well as pushing the GTA:O community who play deathmatches on a regular basis, into even more separate directions. I'm curious to see if there are any "Run and Gun" players among us, as well as what your thoughts on this playing style are, and how you feel about people attempting to alter the way you play, so the guidelines are better fitting for their preferences. Also, perhaps i'm having bad luck, and you have yet to run into any of this.

As flawed as run and gun is I find it preferable to the alternative - phone lester, and spam RPGs wherever you can see a blip. At least with RnG you have a chance of getting near your opponent.

I play RNG because I enjoy it, I don't push my style on anyone else. If you want to corner shoot that's fine, everything in this game can be countered. My only pet peeve is the BP helmets, those are the only folks I'll kick from my lobby. As far as the CvC I avoid that nonsense, and only play in public lobbies. Those crews are a little to anal retentive for me, and I've play with and against allot of those you tube guys. All the CvC sh*t is nothing more than soap opera nonsense and I'm too old for it.

EDIT: As far as the CvC with rules, sad part of that is even when you play within the guidelines and win, the opposing team will find something to bitch and complain about saying that some rule here or there was broken and that's why said team won. Public lobbies are far less stressful, only downside is getting people to join.

Corner shooting is my biggest complaint in this game haha. i believe there is a happy medium, between RnG and spamming lester and RPG's, personally. And CvC's are very hard to get going, and it always ends in someone accusing of hacks, mods , or camping , or whatever they come up with. I agree with you SteveNYC

Let them run and gun, I'll play my way. then I'll laugh at them while they cry that I'm a camper. Whatever, don't let anyone tell u how to play the game u paid for. That's what I say.

Personally Lester shouldn't even exist in DM's, if you need blip security that badly stay in free roam. But if you want to waste money on Lester, and 20k plus on RPG's and Homing Missiles who am I to stop you.

Agreed. We've had CvC's turn into who could find a good, safe spot to call Lester first. The few successful CvC's we've had, were carefully planned out, and rules were meticulously gone over.

I like run and gun maps, I play them fairly frequently. I don't buy into any "rules" though, I think anyone can play however they want. If they want to use cover, use certain weapons, etc. then I really have no problem with that. If people wanna bitch later that's fine too...I really don't care about anyone else's personal feelings about the game, especially after they lost a death match against me. I only care about my own personal enjoyment of the game, and that is the only thing I consider when it comes to how I play the game.

The main reason I like the RnG maps is because there is not a lot of cover, and they are small, simple maps. You don't have to know the map very well, and you don't have to worry about people spamming Lester and RPG's or camping in spots where they are nearly impossible to get to getting cheap kills. RnG maps place everyone on a more equal playing field, and they tend to favor fast-paced aggressive playing styles over timid, campy types. I also like them because the kill counts are frequently very high, so it makes it easier to unlock weapon tints and generally just makes the game more interesting and enjoyable, for me at least. To each their own though.

The only style of death matches I really hate are the "8,000,000 RP & $$" ones. They don't even deserve to be called death matches really. It is irritating that like 80% of the online matches are these types, you really just have to host your own matches and wait patiently for people to join if you wish to avoid them.

Sounds like wannabe's. From my experience, Run & Gun is mainly to be used with Free Aim. It honestly defeats the purpose with Auto Aim mechanics.

As for setting up Crew Battles, there should be a compromise to the settings from both parties if both parties vary in preferences. f*ck off if some twat thinks he's in control...nope! We'll work together if they want a piece of me and my crew...don't like it, f*ck off.

I believe you have it a little wrong, but only a little. Run and gun isn't necessarily auto-aim. If you really want to play some good run and gunners go to free aim lobbies. But run and gunning is more specifically free aiming your target (R1) without (L1) while moving side to side. This allows you to move much quicker. This is very useful for people trying to snipe you, making it pretty darn difficult to get sniped (in medium range gun battles). Often people start off far away, and whenever you are in closer range, the best run and gun player will have depleted the opponents health making the auto-aim kill very quick. When you auto-aim you aren't running and gunning, you are using L1 so your player is pretty much stationary. Keep in mind this is more of a competitive playstyle, and usually most fun when the other person is running and gunning too. Otherwise, don't be an idiot, a decent sniper will end you easily (at very long distances). I have met some people that can freeaim "run n gun" and get headshots like it aint nothing. It was literally like they had auto-aim at any range. Best gun for it is carbine rifle, or special carbine (less recoil). Combat Mg's have too much recoil. Also, as far as running around the corner and combat rolling, for the most part, the first to roll is the first to die. If you counter roll very quickly after their roll, when they stand up from rolling they will have no target to lock on because you are still in your roll, and when you stand up, you will lock right on, forcing them to roll again or be killed. Regardless your roll will always be a half a second or so behind theirs, making it difficult for them to lock onto you, but easy for you to lock onto them.

PS: As far as the five guys running around the corner holding hands trying to "run and gun". RPG, get the multi kill and be done with it. True run and gunning is 1v1.

Eh, GTA is not a proper game to play if you really want DM style gameplay.

I highly prefer this type of playing deathmatches, over the overusing of rpg and miniguns by twat campers and hiders that call lester every minute to reveal other players.

For example, yesterday i played a team deathmatch at 'mansion' map, and the other team weren't able to kill anyone with a 'normal' weapon like assault rifles. No, every single kill was with an RPG or minigun or grendade launcher, they were camping and sitting on rooftops all the way, along with their sh*tty bulletproof helmets. And revealing players constantly. Really all this sh*t that pussies use, together.

If you can't play a deathmatch without overusing explosives/minigun, revealing playes and all the sh*t listed above, you're not worth to play a deathmatch.

Not that i'm a Run n Gunner, i usually don't overuse combat rolling.

I rarely play Dm's, but when I do, expect me to snipe from a safe camp roof with my BP helmet on.

Hate me all you want :)

Still don't get it why would people play a lot of deathmatches and pvp in this game with broken, quirky and clumsy controls (wanna turn around and get into cover? hey, let's run directly forwards instead, says the game).

But regardless, if a large portion of the playerbase likes this approach, then let them play it that way, nobody is forcing to join. I certainly won't. Just like you don't have to join the stupid ramp races and $99999999RP invites.

Been in some of those, except it was on free-aim.

They were fun the first few times and I even won, but then they kept voting to repeat it over and over again and eventually I got sick of it.

Playing on auto-aim defeats the purpose in my opinion, and I play both aiming styles. It's like playing a parkour match set to Owned+Pickups.

I hate those, mainly because I love to pop some heads with my heavy sniper rifle.
Call me camper all you want, but in the eng, being a sniper is actually a effective strategy.

GTA (to me) is about being tactically superior. It's infinitely limiting tactically to play DM's like you mention. You wanna be a COD god? GTFO my game.

Especially with AUTO f*ckING AIM.... good lord people are ridiculous.

Great post. I recently got a comment on a YouTube video about how I'm lame for using the R1 cover, never mind the fact that I don't stay behind cover long enough to even consider it camping. The same person said me calling Lester decreases my skills since I can see blips, never mind the fact that I'm usually the Power Player and have to give up cheap kills to actual assault shotgun campers because they can see me and I can't see them (hence why I call Lester).

I can only laugh at such misguided criticism.

Like you said, everyone is entitled to play their own style, unless previously agreed on.

I consider myself a tactical run and gunner not a mindless one that is happy with a gun fight ending in a tie.

I do hate the RPG Run and Gunner, you know, the guy that shoots RPG at your feet and thinks he is a skilled player. Those guys bother me a little more than the regular run and gun police.

That's how I play. To me hiding on a roof or camping in one spot is not only boring but is playing the game like a coward. I'd rather have fun and die every so often then play the game like a bitch. I'll use cover every so often but I mainly just use it to regain my health or eat snacks I won't just stay and one spot and wait for people to come to me.

What's funny to me is most of the players I've come across who either hide on roofs or in one spot always act like they are skilled when in reality what they are doing is the least skillful aspect of a game that doesn't take much skill to begin with. If you insist on hiding then just admit that you need to use bitch tactics to get kills don't act like it takes takent

Yup that's a problem with free aim, every deathmatch you attempt to oncall is a variation of War Ready or MurkTown. Thats one area that Assisted Aim is better, people tend to be willing to try anything, the down side of that being they have allot of trap maps to deal with.

For the next game if they bring the content creator back they need to balance payout based on the radius of spawn points on the map. You could still play run n gun maps but you wouldn't be getting paid as much as the people that were willing to play more varied open maps that play to the strength of what GTA is about

I have played a lot of deathmatches since the game is launched, last time i checked i am close to 3 k matches. I used to be a run and gunner, and i kill and die a lot, but i am the best player of the match almost always. After i change my style and play as a "camper". So, i see my stats increase a lot.

Its good to be a camper. haha
