Easily GTA V, and looking at meshes and graphics settings it's not hard to see why, first of all the amount of polygons even on large objects is very small, every mesh is fully optimized to use as little polygons as possible, I opened a massive train track bridge mesh and it had less than a thousand polys, another helper is the placeholders used for things like textures and shadows, if something isn't on screen or is at a distance a placeholder is used, there are 4 levels of placeholders for different graphics settings.

Texture sizes are almost all 256x256 or 512x512, not many large textures and very few non repeating textures, the game is just optimized on every level, vehicle and ped lods are changed at distances, vehicles after they leave sight and the immediate area will be culled to use less memory, weapons bullets aren't really projectiles, they are instant hit (although I did change that in one of my mods to make bullets projectiles that have actual forward drop and longer ranges, plus wider FOV and more recoil to make first person feel more realistic) so the game doesn't have to calculate every bullets trajectory, speed, and damage and height falloff.

GTA V is by far one of the most well optimized games I've ever seen, and although that may come at the expense of some visual quality, it still looks amazing and uses way less resources than most open world games.

Run GTA IV on minimum(low) settings 10-20 FPS never more than 20

Run GTA V on minimum(low and Water Quality HIGH)15-30(in interiors 30,sometimes goes to 60,on the beach 30)

CPU:AMD Athlon 64 X2 4800+ Dual Core 2.51GHz

GPU:NVIDIA GeForce 8500GT(512MB)

RAM:2GB

Definitely GTA V

Well...

Running GTA IV at maximum settings. Getting an average of 35fps.

Running GTA V at maximum settings except grass which is on high. Getting an average of 50fps.

Definately GTA V with my GTX 670. It works so much better I wish Rockstar would re-optimize GTA IV. Just to give it back some of the credit it deserved.

You can't get a good framerate on GTAIV at max settings. What did you expect?

Just did another test with GTA IV, this time with GeDoSaTo. My monitor's native resolution is 1366x768. GDST downscale resolution set from 1080p and 1440p (Imagine a 6770 running 1440p).

1366x768 avg. FPS is 35 - GPU Usage 60%

1920x1080 avg. FPS is 35 - GPU Usage 68%

2560x1440 avg. FPS is 34 - GPU Usage 74%

There goes without saying that IV is unoptimized. Even then CPU on 3 cores barely reach max usage, so technically it's not a CPU bottleneck.

For me they both have pretty much the same performance, only GTA V can reach 60+ FPS, and GTA IV always hangs around 40.

GTA V Of course, GTA IV was bit unstable, random drops and stuff, in case of V, it is smooth as butter(if compared with IV).

I had GTA V running at 45-60 FPS even though I already abused my 2gb video card and 4gb ram computer by maxing every graphic setting (except MSAA). However I already lowered every graphic setting (even resolution) and still get 10-30 fps

Glad Rockstar Games learned their mistake

Both are bad. GTAV on high settings stutters when driving at faster speeds and drops drastic amounts of frames around vinewood and sandy shores. It also loses 5 frames when in third-person mode compared to first-person mode.

Anyone who says GTAV is well optimized is exaggerating, or has a computer with high-level 2017 parts.

If you don't use shadows in GTA IV... (everything else maxed out) i think GTA IV will run better.
