Police scanners and emergency services

I downloaded an app today that let's me listen to Police radios! I have become a bit addicted to it hahaha not really but it's fun as hell to listen to what's going on. I can also tune into other countries. I'm from Australia and the ones I get and have been listening to are the NSW Police and Western Victoria Police Radio transmissions.

Is this illegal?

Has anyone else done this?

I find it really interesting and am fascinated by it. Anyone have stories to share or anything? I have a few from just today!

Thanks!

It depends on your location. It's illegal in quite a lot of places in Europe but I think it varies from state to state in the US.

I used to have an app on iOS (from what I can remember, the app had a blue background maybe and then had the police radio in the foreground). I only listened in on holidays like Memorial Day, Christmas, etc. That's usually when a lot of people get caught doing stupid crimes. Other than that, I would only listen in to either fire or police departments if there's a major incident going on.

I use Zello which is a walkie-talkie app, for either 1on1 or group chats. There's a few emergency groups on it... must be cheaper than radios as the apps free. The Glasgow channel is a laugh...
