GTA Online Addiction Stories

Hey!

Let me just start out by saying this thread is specifically for those who are plainly addicted to Grand Theft Auto Online and their addiction is affecting other parts of your life. Basically, what I'm saying is that everyone here deserves support in their struggle and deserves to be listened to and advised in what they should do in a friendly manner. Keep this thread a clean and supportive environment. Thank You.

I'm a GTA Online addict. I'm willing to admit that because it is extremely obvious and while the ideal of being obsessed or addicted to a video game, something that shows no harm from the outside may seem surreal to some, for those who have it... it is all too real. Okay, so lets rewind. I have owned an Xbox 360 for many, many years and have been a gamer most of my life. I use to only play the annual Call of Duty games when they came out and it gave a chance to escape the real world and do something completely different, something I would never experience in my own real-world life and be successful at it and progress. I played Call of Duty for I'd say about 1 or 2 hours a day. Nothing too serious. As the years progressed however, my gaming collection grew and so did my hours spent playing video games. Still nothing too bad though. Maybe 3-4 hours a day and a bit longer on weekends. My family knew I was spending a lot more time playing my Xbox 360 but thought nothing of it after I had explained to them that I was playing with close friends through online experiences (which i was). Then Grand Theft Auto V came out. I had played GTA IV and absolutely loved everything about that game and was more than over-excited to play the next installment in the GTA franchise. I bought GTA V a few days after it came out and played almost 20 hours a day to beat the story mode, however I gad beaten it in about 3 days so my parents though nothing of it (Mostly because they knew how huge new video games were to me) and gave me my time with this game thinking it would end quickly and it did... until Online came out. I played GTA Online about 5-10 hours a day more than I had ever played any video game ever. Every update released would send me into day-long or sometimes longer gaming sessions. My parents feared for me and I feared for myself I at some points too. Currently I am still struggling with this addiction however I am proud to say I have cut down ENORMOUSLY and I know you who is also addicted can too. It is currently 2015 and I play on my Xbox One. Please, if you have any questions or stories about you or a friend's GTA Online addiction let me know. Let's talk. Thanks

Why does his age matter? Videogame addiction is not age restricted.

I'm 29, with a full time office job, and I've suffered from videogame addiction; GTA especially. I bought the game when it first released, and I've been playing GTA Online since it became available in October 2013. I have found it difficult to withdraw from the game, at times. I've found it helpful to 'ween' myself off on other games (Batman and Mordor the most successful attempts), so if the OP is struggling then try downloading this month's free PS Plus games and use them to try and put some distance between yourself and GTA Online. Assuming you're on PS4.

Sort of on-topic, here is an article written by a football (soccer) journalist and a psychologist about his addiction to another videogame, Football Manager:

http://www.theguardian.com/football/blog/2015/may/05/is-being-addicted-football-manager-medical-condition

There are some general points raised about videogame addiction, although admittedly most of it is Football Manager focused.

I love this game more than anything, which is why I had to stop playing it completely. It has taken control of my life.

Hi, I'm TheKillerDonuts,

, you will learn how to play as much video games as you want, and blame your complete lack of friends and ambition on an addiction that doesn't exist.

My 3D virtual world addiction started with the first Castle Wolfenstein, then Doom and Quake, and then a long bout with Unreal Tournament. So many wasted years.

I like modern world 3D virtual environments as opposed to the endless stream of sword and sorcery Medieval games and the linear war games, which I never play. So the GTA series was basically created just to ruin my life :p

I'm addicted to the GTAV game world, just as I was with all the 3D and HD GTA games before. I have wasted waaaaaaay too many hours, months and years of my life playing GTA. I took one detour into Red Dead Redemption, which is so beautiful.

GTA Online is the deepest pit of addiction, as I expected it would be, as soon as I saw the announcement for GTAV in October 2011. My jaw hit the desk. I fell to my knees in abject recognition of the beautiful rendition of Los Santos and San Andreas.

It's not like I even like the screwed up gameplay design of GTA Online, especially the brain-dead PvP, but I like being in that virtual world, doing the few things that we are able to do. So yeah, I'm hopelessly hooked until more story DLC and then GTA6.

My only hope is that before I physically die in the real world, there will be a service where I can upload my consciousness to the cloud, and then I can play each new GTA game that comes out, until the end of civilization as we know it.

Because basically, we're just ahead of the curve. Ultimately, civilization as we know it will be virtual. :)

Mr. Scratch

I went through that phase last summer when they had that 2x RP/Cash period. Played it like crazy.

I wasted an entire 4-day weekend, doing endless solo drag races for 2xRP, and missions (yeah, RR and others) during that 2x weekend. :*(
