Jebfive
Has anyone thought why Southern San Andreas is an Island? I see three possibilities: 1.) The events of the movie San Andreas 2.) THe ego of the people of los Santos was so inflated that they built a giant canal between them and the mainland, with Blaine county there only for exploitation of natural resources. 3.) Just Because

universetwisters
I would like to imagine that San Andreas is a lot bigger than it actually is ingame - a LOT bigger, with even more streets in Los Santos and sh*t, but the only ones relevant to the plot are shown ingame. There could be hundreds of neighborhoods in Los Santos, from slums to factories to suburbs that we aren't even aware of because of the unwillingness of the characters to actually go there for the plot. /endtheory StJimmy, Niko Montana, FrikkenZz and 11 others

Adrian J.
"Why didn't they just put an endless desert as the border ?" Probably because of the planes and helicopters? They would have to put a lot of usless textures so the area outside of players reach would look nice (if you flew high up, or on Mt. Chiliad), instead of a plain boring... something, desert/forest. RDR was surrounded by land but it was mostly moutntains, if you went up high on the Nekoti Rock and looked at the Flat Iron Lake it ended very blandly. donnits
We simply can't see Northern San Andreas, that doesn't mean it does not exist. It's just unreachable for us. Same goes for HD's LC. It's part of Liberty State, but we can't see the rest of it. Yeah, i know North SA exists. Paleto County and the like. Still, naming your map "Southern San Andreas" just makes you feel more left out than naming your map as the full "Liberty City", "Vice City" or complete "San Andreas" as we got in GTA SA. Not complaining, technically speaking, GTA V's map is enormous and beautiful. Still, you feel left out thinking of the possibility of playing in the northern part of the state you're currently playing in. Katabasis

All I can see is R* making it in a future game and adding it to GTA Online afterwards. donnits
JStarr31
Look it's like this, in every GTA since III, the map has been made into an island to represent the portion of the area that is familiar to the protagonist. Even IRL, I ONLY know an 'x' amount of my state/city, so if I where to draw a map of the only areas within my city I know, the map would look a lot like an island with the 'water' areas being the unknown. Thus this is how GTA maps are meant to portray a region. Even though the rest of SA actually exist and is most likely attached to V's island mass by land, we have only the represented area of the map that the protagonists would know (or even care about, that's why Yankton seems like there's an ocean between the states when really it's just water being used as a metaphor for unknown, unseen, or otherwise not cared about areas - unless otherwise noted as a lake or river, etc) So the map of GTA V is just a piece of land "broken off" of the rest of the state for gameplay purposes, mainly because crashing your jet plane into an 'invisible wall' going full speed would just be the worst.... Also computer generated land isn't R* style, every inch better be hand-made or go to EA with that sh*t... J-B
Endless land to the north and east would work. What purpose would it serve that couldn't filled by say a damaged bridge with an unreachable shore as part of horizon sky box ? Endless land sounds neat on paper, but either it's gonna look like sh*t or require more dev hours that deserve to be put elsewhere.
