Frantz Fuchs
Rockstar Games, via its parent company Take-Two Interactive, has filed a lawsuit against the BBC in London today for trademark infringement in relation to the broadcaster’s upcoming drama ‘Game Changer’ (working title). The 90-minute feature will focus on the real-life conflict between Rockstar President Sam Houser and the US lawyer, and outspoken critic of the GTA series, Jack Thompson, with Daniel Radcliffe and Bill Paxton playing the respective roles. Here is Rockstar’s statement in full, issued to IGN: "Take-Two Interactive has filed suit against the BBC for trademark infringement based on their movie currently titled ‘Game Changer’ as it relates to Rockstar Games’ Grand Theft Auto video game series. "While holders of the trademarks referenced in the film title and its promotion,Rockstar Games has had no involvement with this project. Our goal is to ensure that our trademarks are not misused in the BBC's pursuit of an unofficial depiction of purported events related to Rockstar Games. We have attempted multiple times to resolve this matter with the BBC without any meaningful resolution. It is our obligation to protect our intellectual property and unfortunately in this case litigation was necessary." http://uk.ign.com/articles/2015/05/21/rockstar-games-files-lawsuit-against-the-bbc?+main+twitter EDIT: Sorry for wrong section. Osho
So, BBC didn't get the permission before filming or all this just to hype the drama before release?
Uncle Sikee Atric
So, BBC didn't get the permission before filming or all this just to hype the drama before release?Probably the latter. I smell something whiffy in the production stages anyway, methinks it is gonna be stinker and reduced to BBC Four so it can vanish without a trace.... It probably has too much 'fiction to spice it up' anyway. I really do not think the reality makes for an interesting piece of drama. King Vercetti
I don't see why it would be interesting to watch anyway if it doesn't even have support from Rockstar and things like interviews and office information, like day to day stuff. But Rockstar does have the right to defend their trademark, and by law, they HAVE to, or they risk losing it or devaluing it. CarlitoDorito
They've had nothing to do with it, so the BBC are going on tabloid stuff and witness reports? It starts Sam Houser as a kid, dreaming of making a game, skip to his teen years and he's talking about making a game where you can go anywhere and do anything. Sam meets a girl and it's all romance, until she sees how super sexist GTA is. A heart broken Sam makes a vow to make the best game ever, San Andreas comes along. Sam, now an alcoholic because he hasn't gotten over his ex yet gets a call from Dan, "Sam! We're being f*cked!" Jack Thompson has sued them, now it's a court drama where in the end Sam and Jack end up best friends because jack also loved and lost. Dan houser is replaced by Danielle houser to appeal to women. It's drama. Hybrid_Punk, King Vercetti and MartyFrost

Cutter De Blanc
The movie ends with Sam, Leslie and Dan locking Jack in the trunk of a car and pushing him into the ocean. Then Dan dances off into the sunset while the credits roll. scalliano
It's not always neccesary to seek the permission of the copyright owner, for criticism or review of reporting current events. Not always, but this is precisely the reason why the much-fabled Gizmondo movie hasn't materialized yet.
Seenyour31
If this TV movie is ever released, and since it's being dramatized they definitely should work in a scene where after some small legal/courtroom hearing in his favor the Jack Thompson character believing he has the upper hand over Sam Houser and R* turns to Houser and says "game over man, game over." tom_p1980
Sounds to me like R* want some financial remuneration from the BBC for the use of their trademarks, they can't be too worried about the content of the program given those events are a matter of public record, which is accessible by anyone who wants to find out about them. I would have thought creative licencing would have applied in this instance, clearly R* see $£$ and want in.
