Editing the "handling.meta": Lets learn from console modders

Recommended Posts

Miac

In my effort to change the way vehicles behave on GTA V on PC, I have quickly realized that mods for console version of GTA V, especially Xbox 360, may be the biggest source of information for modders of the PC version.

I have found two mods for Xbox 360 version of GTA V that change the way vehicles behave to more realistic, or more GTA IV way. These guys put A LOT OF EFFORT AND TIME to make these mods, because modding on console platforms is painstakingly slow, so I have respectfully linked both mods to their original threads.

1. „GTA V Realistic Driving Mod“ by stoyan

2. „GTA V Realistic Handling V2.7 (100% REALISTIC DAMAGE)“ by EUF

Author stoyan openly thanks to Killatomate85 and his „Realistic driving“ mod for GTA IV on PC, which, as stoyan states, served as a blueprint for developing his own mod for GTA V. Both of the mods are free of charge, and are probably a very good start for PC modders trying to make adjustments for their own „handling.meta“ file.

Depending for what console version of the game the mod is made, you will need a specific tool to extract the mod:

1. Kornto's rpf viewer – a tool for extracting rpf files from console versions of GTA V

2. GTA V Handling Converter – to convert values from „handling.dat“ (used in old console version of GTA V) to „handling.meta“ (improved file structure in new GTA V version)

3. wxPirs – to extract files from „tu0000000x_00000000“ files (GTA V console version update)

4. OpenIV – a tool for editing rpf files on PC (install OpenIV, open „update.rpf“ file from „\Grand Theft Auto V\update\“ folder, enable „editing mode“ inside OpenIV and enable ASI loader when asked, and import modded „handling.meta“ file into „\common\data\“ folder from „update.rpf) Make sure you backup your original „update.rpf“ file first

5. GTA V - Handle Editor - an elegant tool tool for editing the handling:

NOTE: You can use most of these tools/methods to extract, import, compare & fix other textual like files from other mods released for console version of GTA V but I have concentrated mainly on "handling.meta" file

p.s. can moderator change the thread title to: Editing the "handling.meta": Lets learn from console modders!

Part two:

After extracting handling.meta from original game I compared them with "DiffMerge" text compare tool to see and fix the difference.

EUF's "handling.meta" file crashes on loading story mode, so I compared it to stoyan's one (which I renamed to "stoyan.meta" for better overview) and spot that there is a repeating paragraph added in EUF's file which is not there in stoyan's file:

        <Item type="CCarHandlingData"> <fBackEndPopUpCarImpulseMult value="0.1" /> <fBackEndPopUpBuildingImpulseMult value="0.03" /> <fBackEndPopUpMaxDeltaSpeed value="0.6" /> </Item>

All I have to do now is click on the red paragraph so it is selected, and press alt+right. This will merge the text difference between the two files in this paragraph. Now you have to hold alt+down until you reach another paragraph difference and press alt+right again. It took me about 10 minutes to fix the repeating added paragraph because I had to do it manually. If somebody knows a better way, let me know.

With this method you can also merge any other differences and easily spot what has been changed. You can even compare the original handling.meta file to any of the mods and see which values have been changed.

How is that documentation? Documentation means explained file structure and semantics, explained variables and maybe value range and so on.

Sorry, I am new to modding. I was unsure about where to put this. Moderator should move this if possible.

New "handling.meta" file you have to import into "update.rpf" archive under "GTA V folder\update".

To do this you have to:

- have GTA V patched to 350.1 or 350.2 version

- have OpenIV installed

- have ASI loader installed in OpenIV (black upper part of the program)

- enable Edit mode under OpenIV

I have been wanting to have a car that weighs 200,000 tons since I used to mod SA.

With these tools I can do that now but I have a problem.

If I mod stoyan's downloaded handling.meta it is fine and the car is heavier, but I do not like the handling overall.

I tried to extract the original handling file to edit that but when I do it is always zero bytes :(

What am I doing wrong?

In the RPF file I renamed the original handling.meta to handling_.meta. So now I have the original and the modded handling file in the RPF. If I extract the original it is zero bytes but if I extract stoyan's onw that I put in, it id showing the correct size and I can edit that in notepad.

Well, I am not sure what is the problem. You should review your steps because you are probably missing something. You can always ask for help in the original thread for the OpenIV tool,

I really can't tell what is the problem. Maybe just wait for next release of OpenIV where they will add the "mods" folder in GTA V so it will be easier.

Maybe both of you have a look at this tutorial video for help.

I also added another tool for editing the handling: GTA V - Handle Editor

If you are talking about the first post, I would say it is not a tutorial but more a collection of tools for extracting data from mods released for console versions of GTA V with emphasis on editing the handling.

I'm talking about the overall point of the thread, is it a tutorial? It's hard to tell.

I notice the original handling.meta in the rpf files says it's encrypted. I guess that is the problem.

At least the modified one works and the game plays without problems so it is a success in that respect.
