I bought a GTX 970, but..

I recently bought the Zotac GTX 970 4GB version so i could play GTA V on max, and see all the sexy colors it has to offer.

I own the Acer AG3-605-UR1D, with a 500w power supply. However, It says 484 max on the power supply. I was running the graphics card fine, until I checked the temperature. At first, the graphics card temperature was only going up - It reached a maximum of 90 degrees Celsius if i remember.

After a few minutes , the CPU and Motherboard temperatures started rising fast. It was reaching 68 degrees Celsius - It might have gone higher, but I cant remember.

I have heard that It's usually OK for most computers to run at these temperatures, but I'm not so sure about this.

Will I be OK? I don't want fried computer, i want KFC.

Edit: I realize this is in the wrong section! My Bad.

90c is pretty high, normal temps should be 20-40c idle and 60-70c for gameplay

How ventilated is your case?

Is their space for the card to breath?

There Is plenty of space for it.

is it happening every time you are playing?

What about other graphically demanding games?

I have only tried GTA V and Far Cry 3. It does happen every time, but sometimes the temperature won't be as bad. I'm just concerned as to what the maximum temperature a PC can handle.

Try adding an exhaust fan on the back of the case. I'm guessing you have an internal exhaust card instead of reference "blower" card. Adding a fan to the side panel should help.

A GTX 970 normally should not exceed 70-75 degrees celsius under load.

90 degrees oh my ! Mine is at 65 max when playing and it's OC, weird

I think the max temp is 115-120C but not sure

Jealous. It hasn't gone up to 90C in awhile, I might keep this card.

Is there a fan missing on the left side of the pic on the case? How many fans do you have? What is your CPU? How long are you running it? My 970 runs fine as far as temperature, my CPU (i5 3450) gets to steady 90% + usage but temp is normal. I noticed more heat in my case compared to my GTX 660. I just have a normal Dell fan and case. Then again Im only on GTA V for 2-3 hours at most.

What is that thing on the side of the card? Never seen that.

The thingy on the left side of the card is a air ventilator, i think. As far as i know, there is no fan missing. I bought this pc like 6 months ago brand new.

You should definitely add a fan to the back of your case. I'm betting all the hot air from both the CPU and your 970 is just sitting in your case swirling around, and that's why everything is getting so hot.

Hmmm odd..heck my gtx 970 fans don't spin half the time because it's so cool

For the time being, you should under volt and under clock your card to keep the temps down, you shouldn't notice much performance drop as it's likely to be thermal throttling at those temps.

Not even my laptop reaches that high temperature on the GPU, perhaps get better cooling and underclock it a bit?

im going to be brutally honest here, your case is garbage for gaming, you don't have enough airflow and that case never will no matter how many fans you put in it. also your power supply is too weak and can add to the heat issues trying to keep up. your cpu fan is stock and garbage. trust me this is what I do for a living, gaming and selling computers. you need a thermaltake or other similar case to keep your rig cool. also you need to hide all the wires behind the motherboard plate as that kills airflow too. just my 2 cents.

I should probably just send this back before i blow myself up

is the fan speed rising? It should be as loud as a jet engine, even if the heat-sink isn't making good contact. Or especially because of that.

You need a LOT more air flow there... with the photo you took of the inside of your case, that aint nothing! You are pushing limits with no airflow.

That is like someone with lung cancer trying to run a block.. GIVE IT MORE AIR!!!!!!!!!!

In other words.... get a better case

Your GPU temps are completely fine. Nothing to worry about.

Your CPU-temp is a little high however, you should get a custom CPU-cooler if you haven't already.

CPU maximum 65-70

GPU maximum 75-80

You can go higher but its a gamble and putting more stress on component.

The best is a custom case with a custom computer

a Better CPU cooler is a good idea but not a must if you dont overclock

Good airflow even with a case like yours can get you to acceptable temps if you dont overclock or SLI

A front botom intake fan pushing in and a top rear exhaust sucking out if possible.

Dont block the exhaust or put your case in a close compartement.

If I look at you first pic (top left), you are missing the rear fan, thats the first fan you want to install

you can use MSI afterburner to monitor your temperature and have a graphical display of you temps while in full screen.

Good luck

The fans don't even kick in on my 970 while playing GTA V. Temp is about 58 degrees I think. It's an ASUS Strix. CPU (i5 2400) is around the same I think and I have an Arctic Cooler 2.

My 4690k was running at 80-90 degrees on stock before i got a new CPU-fan. The fan that came with the CPU was horrible!

90 degrees isn't exceptionally high for a 970.

I have a R9 290 which goes 80+ degrees while playing.

But that CPU fan though.... Get rid of it, slap in a Hyper TX3 or something and enjoy a good cooled CPU without the noise of a freight train driving by.

Edit: I looked at the temps, and it's nothing to be worried about while playing.

If these were the temps on idle, then you should be worried.

TRY GET A VAN CONTROLLER WITH SENSORS FOR PREMATURE IT WILL TELL THE EXACT TEMPERATE ..THE PROGRAM U R USING TO TEST TEMPRETURE IS NOT SO exact....i am usin a van coptroller n while playing i get 50 dfegress -52 ce with my gpu amd 6790 2gb..... my cpu never get hot over 45 degree cel

I don't think you need to buy anything to check temps, yeah softwares aren't 100% accurate but still i don't get the point to spend money for a 5 degrees difference ...

That is some seriously slow RAM you got there...

Best advice on future upgrades.... buy faster ram... 2ghz+

How the hell could be 970's temp much higher than 80C?? It has throttling point at 80C.

This..

OT: You need to get a better case man and that cable management is horrible. now since you mentioned you bought this a couple months back i assume this was a prebuilt rig so that's why its so messy. now if for what ever reason you absolutely can't get a better case or you don't have the ability to transfer everything to a new case get in there an try to playing around with the rearrangement of the cables , also if you don't use that optical drive just get rid of it and the mounting to give it more space and install a couple fans and you could probably scrape by. but honestly id recommend you get another case m8
