How english movie and game titles sound in english speaking languages. I'm from Holland and game titles like doom, assassins's creed, burnout, little big planet sounds pretty cool to me but if i translate those titles in my language then it sounds very stupid. Not only titles but also ingame text. How does it sound to you? For example : need for speed is a very, very dumb title if you ask me.

I have never stopped to think about it, as brands alone they sound great because the names just sound good.

But from a meaning perspective you are right: all the names are nonsense. You can 'translate' some of them into English by using synonyms:

Assassin's Creed -> Soldier Ideaology

Need for Speed -> Requirement of Velocity

Grand Theft Auto -> Car Steal

Those sound really dumb.

P.S. inb4 physicists say velocity and speed are not the same thing

Grand Theft Auto V = Biltyveri V

Assassin's Creed = Snigmordernes overbevisning

Need for Speed = Behov for fart

I just hate my language sometimes.

It's as old and uncool as a Germanic language can get.

Grand Theft Auto: Grand Vol de Voiture,

Need For Speed: Besoin De Vitesse,

Assassin's Creed: Les Principes de l'Assassin,

Little Big Planet: Petite Grosse Planète.

Sounds a little stupid. But here in the province of Quebec, we translate movie title, and even some video games. I hope they never decide to translate all of them.

Grand Theft Auto- Velika krađa automobila

Need for Speed- Potreba za brzinom

When you translate it, it doesn't sound so exciting.

Grand Theft Auto: Stort Bil Tyveri

Need For Speed: Behov For Fart

Burnout: Brenne Ut

Little Big Planet: Lille Store Planet

Doom: Fordømt

Let me correct those grammatical errors for you:

Assassin's Creed: Leiemorderens Trosbekjennenlse - You can't use apostrophes in Norwegian*, that's Norwegian 101

Grand Theft Auto: Biltyveri - You used a literal translation which makes no sense, and "English syndrome", which means dividing Norwegian words which are not supposed to be divided.

Need For Speed: Fartsbehov - Learn your synonyms, guy.

Burnout: Brenne Ut - This is passable, though I would write "utbrenning".

Little Big Planet: Liten Stor Planet - Non-specific, you wrote 2/3rds of it as specific but kept the non-specific "planet".

Doom: Fordømmelse/undergang - "Fordømt" means "Doomed"

You can do better =)

* You may use apostrophes at the end of subject whose name ends with s, i.e. Thomas' thing.

i dont even understand why grand theft ayto is calked grand theft auto.

its a serious offence which can bring you into prison.

they couldhave also called grand theft auto: v:

murder v

sexual assault v

kidnapping v

all of them are offences which can bring you in prison, and since you cant store any stolen cars into your garages in suckass gta v anyways thy shoud propably rename it

Luckily in Indonesia games and movies title still use proper English, but if you do translate them:

Grand Theft Auto: Pencurian Mobil Besar-besaran

Need For Speed: Kebutuhan akan Kecepatan

Just Cause: Hanya Sebab

Left 4 Dead: Ditinggal untuk Mati

Team Fortress 2: Tim Benteng 2

Call of Duty: Panggilan Tugas

Star Wars: Perang Bintang

It does sounds bland if you understand Indonesian language.

OP, this has also crossed my mind numerous times (I'm also Dutch), and you are completely right. Every English title sounds ridiculous when translated into Dutch.

I always call Johnny Cash "Jantje Contantje", because it rhymes and fits well.

It can be the same for english speakers, When I watch movies from another country. if i watched the "dubbed" version it sounds retarded and everyone sounds mono-toned . I rather watch it in the language it should be and read the subtitles

The one thing that surprises me the most is that in Dutch (I dunno if it does in German aswell) is that "Bread" comes in singular and plural forms. In English, you say "Bread" to refer to either a slice of bread or a whole pack of bread, you never say "breads".

Kleine Grote Planeet sounds brilliant.

Much much much cooler and totally different in German:

Kleiner Großer Planet
