Work was great today. Worked with different people. A girl and a guy. The girl and I laughed a lot at each other's shenanigans , and the guy and i talked about import cars almost the entire shift. :^:

I haven't posted here since 2008, and I've been playing a helluva lot of GTA V lately... so yeah, I'm back. I actually figured out my password, eh? Sup everybody.

Welcome back, Although you might regret it :D

Ha, hopefully not, though I feel like I've seen it all so I doubt I will regret it very much... I just regret all the time I spend on the internet period... minus time spent playing GTA V. :p

PoeticWhisper

My Grandmother is on life support rn, she ruptured her gallbladder and has an enlarged liver full of fluid. They had to dehydrate her to try and see if the liver would give out the liquid to her body, but it didn't. So they had to move around her liver to fix her gallbladder and now she is where she is. On life support.

My Mom is flying to Florida for 5 days to go and visit her(Cause it's my moms mom) and I really hope she pulls through. I haven't seen her in a few years but I always used to go camping with her for weeks straight during the summer when I was younger. I've never had anyone remotely close to me die in my family before, I really hope she will be fine. I don't really believe in God, but I know she does. Your hopes and prayers are welcome with open arms.

While I don't agree with everything TheMysteriousMrEnter has to say, I'll be damned if he isn't an intelligent bastard.

"What is 5+14? The answer is 19. Now tell me why we care about this problem? We don't. There is none. It's a random math problem that I made up, and literally any equation I could pull out of my head is like that. Every teacher and every parent has heard this question from their child: "Why are we learning this?"

Answer the question. Every single time. And "it's on the curriculum" does not count. Answer the question relating to the real-world. Even better, their real-world. The "curriculum" means absolutely nothing to any student below high school. It's not that hard, either? Why are we studying World War II? Because if we can learn how previous wars and dictators came into power, we can recognize the signs and prevent it from happening again and learn from the aftermath of World War I's mistakes of trying to never have a war ever again. And that's just one of the reasons you can come up with for World War II.

But what if you can't come up with an answer? Why are we learning about Latin? If you can't come up with an answer, in the student's eyes, their question is now a point. And don't bullsh*t either. "We're learning Latin because it makes it easier to learn the other romantic languages." No it doesn't. Spending more time learning the other romantic languages makes it easier to learn the other romantic languages. There is no reason to learn Latin unless you're becoming a doctor or a lawyer, and as much as their parents would wish otherwise, very few people become doctors or lawyers.

Why am I suggesting this? Well, recently we've come up with the theory of the attention economy. In a world where media is becoming more and more engaging people are ignoring the things that aren't as interesting. You pay more attention to that YouTube video than the advertisement that came before. You pay more attention to your video game than you did in class. Educators need to see themselves competing in the attention economy. They no longer have a monopoly on it. And just demanding that you should get the biggest cut the commodity because you deserve it or you're better than the other people demanding a child's attention will get you to lose. Don't say you're better, be better.

How do you do this? Engage your students. You can't do this if you're doing nothing but talking about your students and giving them random marks on a paper that their parents are going to yell at them for. Giving a child a grade is not engaging them. Giving a child a test is not engaging them. Both of them are important to the current model of education, I'm not prepared to argue that. But if you've engaged a student properly, chances are they won't have to study for those tests and grades because they retained it the first time. Also, note-taking is not engaging."

Pretty much putting into words what I've been thinking about the educational system

Ugh, since Voodoos and asshole that don't give two sh*ts about people.

I was sitting in the local library, reading a book.

From nowhere this old man comes up, and he starts asking me questions, where I live, how old I am, which school I go to and so on. Then he gives me his number and tells me that I should call him.

I'm freaking out and I don't know whatthef*ck to do, I'm sitting with a knife besides me and I'm shaking.

Call him from a public phone or *67 to see what he wants?

If he wants you meet him somewhere, I'd check it out if you knew you could handle yourself, it'd also be a good idea to bring a dependable friend.

As long you didn't give him any information you should be fine.

Anyway, you should try and call the number and ask him what he wants. If he's just a lost old man with alzheimers, leave it. If he's a creepy bastard that wants you so badly or potientially harm you, do something. Keep in mind it's just a phone call. You can just hang up again. Neither you're not having any psychical contact.

In case he's some creepy dude, contact your local police department and tell them the situation. Or at least that's what I think you should do.

Not often I post in here, if ever.

I've got a 7-and-a-half hour examination for a professional qualification starting tomorrow at 9:15. I'm pretty nervous, not because I don't think I'm capable of passing it but because I'm rather at the mercy of a syllabus that's 28(!) pages long and enormously broad for what is actually a fairly specific subject.

So as well as stuff like byte-level web communication protocol analysis, deobfuscation of encoded files, network traffic analysis, incident response reporting and all that jazz I'm supposed to also supposed to have a working knowledge of the British and US legal systems and legislation related to data protection, network hardware and architecture, forensic investigation procedures and a range of vendor-specific stuff that can crop up in one form or another.

Examinations like that are always a hassle. I think half of their point is to scare you to the point of reviewing everything and seeing if you crack under the pressure, on top of checking your general work record and safety habits (or potential security concerns, in your case). Either way you're competent in your field, and there shouldn't be much cause for concern. What's your current level of understanding on US privacy and security legislation? (I think if anything that might be the tricky part for you.)

I know the implications of the DMCA on software reverse engineering, which is something mentioned specifically in the syllabus, and I know the basics of PCI-DSS compliance policy.

One thing I need to do some last-minute regulatory binging on is the various sets of policies (EAR and Department of State) governing the exporting of commercial and military cryptographic standards, systems and algorithms.

This was the first thing that came into my mind after reading those posts.

Joking aside, I think it's a good thing you've told that to your parents and the library. You should always be careful.

i don't know what the f*ck you just said man

Oh, oh, I used a computer once, I can help:

byte-level web communication protocol analysis

Analysing each 'unit' of data that is sent over t'internets, where the protocol is basically saying "this is how I'll communicate yeah?". Usually requires a very small set of tweezers.

deobfuscation of encoded files

Obfuscating is where you make it basically impossible for a human to understand the working/purpose of code someone has written through various means, and deobfuscation is where you make such code understandable, much to the annoyance of the person who obfuscated it.

network traffic analysis, incident response reporting

Predicting traffic jams on t'internets and efficiently sending police cars through said jams, respectively. Also making sure the traffic isn't suspicious.

and all that jazz

How good you are at the saxophone.

I'm supposed to also supposed to have a working knowledge of the British and US legal systems

<insert sh*tty joke about anarchism here>

network hardware and architecture

When you cool a network down sufficiently it turns into a solid, also known as hardware. Architecture is the process of designing/building servers with said hardware. Also how servers make a network.

forensic investigation procedures

It's like dusting for fingerprints but the opposite and for t'internets/computers.

and a range of vendor-specific stuff that can crop up in one form or another.

Making sure you have knowledge of specific pieces of software from said software vendors (no pun intended).

On a completely unrelated note, I'm a bit bored right now.
