PC - Mute Microphone Online

Recommended Posts

Hi guys, need a little help with this one.

I'm using a laptop to play GTA 5 and GTA Online, and unbelievable the microphone quality of it is better than that on my PC 3.5mm jack headset.

Now I understand that the game can be setup so that you must PTT (Push to Talk), however, with two hands on an Xbox controller, it normally means I can't "play at the same time" as talking, seeing as I have to press "N" for the PTT.

My question: How can I setup a hotkey (eg, CONTROL + M) to mute my microphone when I want to, so that I can use the "Voice Activated" option, enabling me to play and talk at the same time?

I don't mind downloading and installing a program to enable the function, but so far that has not worked (although I have only tried one program). This was the program I used, which does contain some nifty features, doesn't install anything onto your computer, etc etc. http://www.softpedia.com/get/Multimedia/Audio/Other-AUDIO-Tools/Poryvaev-MicMute.shtml

Whilst that program DOES mute my microphone on the desktop, when I go into game, whether I have the microphone muted or not (set via hot key, with the audible beep to tell you it has worked), the voice animation on the players list appears, and other people confirmed they could hear me.

Thanks for any help you can give.

Problem solved.

Here's what I found. Mic mute, with the laptop, does in fact work with GTA Online. I had to change a setting though which may be on with your setup, if you have a similar problem to mine. Bear in mind I'm running on Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit with this little tutorial:

In the bottom right hand side of the Taskbar, right click on the speaker picture and select "Recording devices".

Right click on the microphone you're using, and select "Properties".

Go over to the "Advanced" tab.

In the "Exclusive Mode" section, make sure that you have DE-SELECTED "Allow applications to take exclusive control of this device".

Click Apply.

Click OK.
Click OK again to close the final window, which should be all your Sound settings (with the Recording tab being open).

You can now use Mic Mute with GTA Online, and whatever hotkey shortcut you've setup should now work. I've opted for (Right) ALT + N, as M opens the Interaction Menu, and N on its own is Push to Talk anyway, so it's all related.

Fancy sorting that when tipsy eh!
