The Call of Duty franchise is dead

I have seen the trailer of Black Ops III, and I have to say that, at least for me, the Call of Duty franchise is dead.

I am saying this as a disappointed fan. Every COD game is increasingly worse than the previous one. In my opinion, Call of Duty has slowly been falling into the grave for a while and all they're doing is throwing more dirt in the grave with Ghosts, Advanced Warfare and now Black Ops III. The campaign of these games is just a bunch of events without an actual story and ridiculous screenplays. Not to mention they are puting a lot of robotic sh*t taking place in a fictitious future. Call of Duty doesn't look like Call of Duty anymore, but like Elysium, Crysis or even Halo. It seems that they don't listen to the fans; many of us are angry at this and very disappointed. They only care about graphics and making money, there's no creativity anymore.

I used to love Call of Duty but now I'm honestly not feeling it anymore. I used to be so pumped for a new COD game but now I almost couldn't care less. I got every COD game and I am not sure I'm buying this one.

What's your opinion on this?

I agree about being disappointed. I got every Call of Duty every year but I will be skipping this one. Reason being is every year I buy it it gets less and less screen time from me, up to the point where I only played Advanced Warfare for about 2 weeks before I put it down and haven't touched it since. Even before the trailer for BO3 I started to come to the conclusion that I'm not gonna bother with it anymore and the trailer just sealed the deal.

Although it's disappointing to some people, other people will buy it and a lot will buy the season pass. Unfortunately those are the people they are making the game for, the habitual buyers, but that's how the business side of things works I reckon. It was fun while it lasted to be honest but for me it's time to move on.

Mmh the last CoD i played was Modern Warfare, when i was still in school.

I remember beating the first two Call of duty's on the highest difficulty. lots of fun. That was when I still cared for FPS. But my favourite will always be CS 1.6. This game makes me feel nostalgic. Really, i wish first person shooters wouldn't have evolved from that time on.

i can imagine that it becomes repetitve even if you get a new CoD every year. And I dislike most future Science Fiction games in general. So the current CoD's are probably not for me.

It would be easy for me to rag on CoD as I was never really a fan except for a brief moment when I played a bit of CoD: 4. However, I did play through the campaigns on a few CoD's just to get a real taste as I did used to enjoy war games. It's the MP culture and pop-casual gamer that CoD brought to the table. It was sort of hard being a fan of GTA and CoD when GTA gave you so much innovation and CoD pandered to the multiplayer heads that often never played through the campaign setting a trend of games ditching the single player experience.

They seem to be adding a different flavour with setting stuff in the future. Maybe it will breath new life into the series.

I'd like to see a nice WW2 CoD but there's a whole bunch of things I just don't like about CoD that I probably wouldn't enjoy that either.

Thinking COD3 is superior to any COD after it, opinion discarded.

Mind you, BO took place in the Cold War so past with events you remember from WW2, BO2 takes place roughly 8 years from now so semi-modern with events you remember from the cold war, BO2 takes place in the far future with tbd. Treyarch basically has this set up to span across a century since World At War.

I liked COD 3, even thought that was before Modern Warfare started mucking up the works. Especially the multilayer on that, it was sorta like a primitive Team Fortress sorta, like how the characters were class-based and the games, such as Capture the Flag, encouraged teamwork, as opposed to GO GO GO SHOOT EVERYTHING THAT ISN'T ON YOUR TEAM AND GET POINTS that you lazily see nowadays.

Black Ops 1 was alright, especially how it wasn't set in the future or some hypothetical HURR WHAT IF RUSSIA GOES RED DAWN situation, but the whole secret war with the soviets was a bit odd, especially considering how weird it would be if the roles were reversed, Soviets fighting Americans in the unpopulated parts of the heartland and deserts. Why can't they do some decent Vietnam shooter game, or better yet, stop playing "follow the leader" with Halo and all these other futuristic shooter games?

On the topic, are there any good shooters set during the Gulf War? That'd be interesting for COD to do, assuming they don't f*ck that up with some bullsh*t "Shoot the exoskeleton Saddam Hussein" schtick.

But this kind of stuff is so f*cked up that it is classic.

Meh, I might jump on it during a steam sale if the zombies mode is any good.

COD began its downward spiral at Black Ops 1. That game was so pitiful, I regret ever playing it.

Zombies has gotten beyond ridiculous and fairly repetitive: Start with a sh*t pistol and hope you find the super dooper OP lazer whatnot then eventually get screwed over by the host leaving or lag

It looks like Cod is slowly turning into an even crappier version of Titanfall

Im glad I stopped investing in CoD and will most likely continue to do so

If only there was a half-realistic FPS that's not published by EA...I guess i have to wait and see how the Tom Clancy games will be in the near future

Call of Duty died when it ceased being a WW2 shooter. Their singleplayer campaigns worked superbly well for WW2. They felt authentic and were super immersive. This "one man in between all the other soldiers doing their duty" is what made it work/awesome.

There is this elaborate review of the PC CoD franchise on youtube somewhere, about 2 hours long. It has alot of valid points about how CoD did stuff right with other games. But to me, apart from being pretty good at their art style, they ceased being fresh and having the formula work for their new 'settings and stories'.

CoD4 (MP) was a hell lot of fun I must say. That's the only MP game (apart from the WW2 CoD's) that was really well balanced. But apart from that, it all went to sh*t.

Hell, they were already cashing out with CoD2, how they treated the PC gaming community.

But still, who cares about CoD nowadays? Now the "declining" popular FPS franchise is Battlefield unfortunatly. BF3/4 (multiplayer wise) were super awesome games. BF3's singleplayer had a good try at the story in my opinion (the book was super awesome, courtesy of Andy McNab). But for some reason they fail to bring something that works.

Medal of Honor 2010 is in my opinion one of the only "military" FPS games that pulled off a singleplayer superbly well. Based on true events, 'written' by real operators. Hell, everything looked super legit too. Shamefully the gameplay was a little too much "off the mill standard FPS". Not to mention, hell, they limited themselves by the consoles yet again.

I have to agree with that. Its probably due to the lack of attention to SP what-so-ever, the godawful launches (bugs galore), and horrible beta releases. If they can get their sh*t together, maybe the BF series wont stay on the decline

As a bit of a cod fan boy, I can agree. Cod has gone into a downward spiral, with microtransactions and idiotic ideas. Personally, I only enjoy advance warfare, or any cod for that matter, when I'm with friends. Otherwise it's just a boring "shoot that guy and kill this guy" kind of game. I might buy bo3 for zombies, but otherwise I'm done with the cod series

For me BO2 was the downward spiral for me. I despise this futuristic BS with a passion, if they actually listened too the fans of this series we wouldn't be getting this Halo wannabe game it has become, the longevity of these futuristic cods are horrible!

The last CoD i actually enjoyed a LOT was MW3, even now i still have a lot of fun playing it. My hype for this franchise has dropped to an all-time low, the only thing that'll make me gain interest is if they remaster the older cod games for next gen...which will probably never happen.

lol...Halo fans would argue that it is trying to be like CoD.....interesting.

But yea after Black OPs, COD has been going downhill, they're grasping at this point.

Don't know about you but I felt it died when 3 came around, that was the beginning of the series becoming the next cash cow after Tony Hawk was dwindling for Activision.

the way I see it is that Treyarch was given the Advanced Warfare engine to play with... so they made the best of it

Both arguments make no sense whatsoever, Halo is just failing at reforming arena shooters (yeah, believe it or not 343i wanted Halo 4 to be the evolution of that genre) and this COD is borderline plagiarizing Deus Ex:Human Revolution.

I have friends who really liked CoD3 actually. The main issue was the glaring lack of a PC version if you ask me.

MW is my all-time favourite MP FPS

The original CoD definitely has the best campaign (the Stalingrad mission is unforgettable), but I really did enjoy CoD4's campaign. CoD4 MP is my favourite online FPS, too. I've always loved the simplicity of it--no need for Steam or GFWL, just type your name in, join a dedicated server and play. The PC version had a lot of depth with custom servers and an excellent community bolstered by Xfire, excellent cheat protection and tireless clan members/admins. Ultimately the online was well polished and functioned perfectly (well, some of the perks were sh*te but they could be disabled anyway). It's a crying shame that Activision has ceased to provide PB support to CoD4. The game still had some activity last year, but hacks were becoming more frequent. I'm worried that playing a typical game of SnD will be impossible when I start playing it again in two months. It's a real shame as CoD4 is one of the last games to foster that sense of community you can only get by playing against the same people on your favourite dedicated server (CS GO is a good game but most people play competitive mode rather than risk ending up on a cheesy mod server).

MW2 basically spelled the end of the series for me. The campaign had some decent moments but didn't constitute a coherent narrative and the MP was a travesty; no dedicated servers, asinine perks/deathstreaks, ridiculous killstreaks, guns that looked and sounded like BB guns, awful cheat protection (VAC) and constant disconnections. I know I've not missed anything by not buying the more recent CoDs.

I really liked MoH 2010. The campaign was, as you, say, excellent, and the MP wasn't too bad. I haven't played Warfighter yet so I can't talk about that.

Looks alright to be honest. Not sure what's black ops-y about it, looks more like Advanced Warfare 2, but seems fine. And it seems to run at 60 FPS 1080p. which is more than I can say for about 90% of peasant games these days, GTA V included.

Yeah, genuinely not hating this. If there was a shred of evidence that the single-player wasn't another 3 hour campaign made up of scripted events I might actually try it.

Can't blame Call of Duty fans for hating it though. They probably feel the same way I felt when Need For Speed turned into a rice-bomb "pimpin" simulator starting with Underground.

My opinion:

COD 1: 8/10

COD 2 10/10 Masterpiece.

COD 3 6/10

COD 7.5/10 World at Duty

COD 4 10/10 Masterpiece

COD MW2: 6/10

COD Black OPS: 7.5/10

COD MW3: WTF is this crap? 2/10

Never played a COD again.

I felt goosebumps when playing this mission. This mission if just TOP CLASS

There are still some wars COD could cover a make an interesting game.

- Vietnam War.

- Korean War (1950)

- Soviet-Afghan War

- War in Chechnya

- War in the Balkans

- Kosovo

- Somalia (Operation Restore Hope)

- Spanish Civil War (1936)

And so on...

But COD has lost it's War flavor. Their games look just like playing Paintball with friends. It's all about colorful weapons, jumping around, Online and little kids running around and screaming.

Thank God we still have Arma 2 and Arma 3

I'm buying Black Ops 3 no matter how hated it seems to be. I mean, gee people, we have only seen a teaser and a reveal trailer. Anyway, I think BO3 is gonna be good. I'm a little doubtful about the game being set in the 2070's, yet I look forward to it.

You can never go wrong with Treyach. They make the best.

Infinity Ward on the other hand...

The old Infinity Ward sh*ts on Treyarch. Until Activision screwed IW over, Treyarch was the 2nd rate CoD Dev.

CoD4 (MP) was a hell lot of fun I must say. That's the only MP game (apart from the WW2 CoD's) that was really well balanced. But apart from that, it all went to sh*t.

That's nostalgia talking, CoD4 was terribly unbalanced. The only decent guns were the M16, MP5 and maybe the RPD/P90, but other than that everything else was garbage in comparison.

Grenades? Good god, they were pure aids. Grenades that were basically mini-nukes and when combined with 3x frag, any bad player could spawn in and lob them across the map everytime they spawned, not exactly balanced.

The maps? They're great for good players because once you get either A or C and then B, you could spawn trap the enemy so bad at whatever their only flag was, Zeus grenades also contributed majorly to spawn trapping.

The perks? Also not really balanced and extremely noob friendly at time. What was worth using in the first perk slot other than bandolier or 3x frag? The second perk slot you basically were forced to use either Juggernaut or Stopping Power, you were always at a disadvantage using anything else. Third perk slot was probably the most balanced, but it still had perks that would basically give bad players kills (Martyrdom/Last Stand), a good player would have to choose between Dead Silence, Steady Aim and Deep Impact, but even in a competitive environment you'd be pretty dumb not to get Dead Silence.

Say what you want, but Black Ops II is by far the most balanced and thought out CoD yet and it's obvious by the stats of everything in that game. Every perk is practically useful and every gun is good in some sort of situation. The only problem with Black Ops II was that weird ass delay between players even on a local connection. E.g. player 1 would run around a corner and kill player 2, but by the time player 1 was actually on player 2's screen he was already dead. It was so broken on BOII and it was even an issue in local splitscreen.
