It's probably Canon to spare him.

But I always kill him cause the cutscene execution is badass

Definitely killing him.

There is just too much interpretation needed when sparing him, interpretation that is rather unsuitable for someone who is finding himself in a situation such as Niko's. Niko searched for Darko for a decade and embarked on a whole journey from Serbia to America in order to find and kill him. Maybe it would have been a bigger punishment for Darko to live. And killing him doesn't bring back all the friends and relatives that got killed. But that's not the point. It's not about a pseudo-philosphical reasoning whether it's right to kill him or not, whether killing him has a concrete benefit or not, whether it's a bigger punishment for Darko to live or not. It's about a simple human being who wanted to put a chapter of his life behind himself. Niko simply couldn't live with the fact anymore, that the person who killed his whole village is still out there, somewhere. The psychological threat and terror is still there with Darko living. It's basic human behavior. Killing Darko is, above all, killing the fear and trauma he caused. Yes, it doesn't change the situation. And maybe Niko feels better after sparing him, which is not even true in my opinion, but in the moment in which Niko sees Darko in front of him, and aims his gun at the person he had been searching for so long, there is no thinking about all these things. Sparing him would have made the whole searching and all the peripeteias Niko lived through in Liberty City completely useless. It would have created a big hole in Niko's life, a big opportunity he let slip for nothing, everything would have been in vain. Killing Darko gives all the years of search, all the time Niko spent thinking about revenge a meaning and seeing Darko die is a true reward.

I always let Darko live. Although the execution scene is badass, I feel like letting him live is the right thing to do, and it's what Niko would do.

Mistersam brings some good points.

Some people believes that sparing Darko is what Niko would do, but that would make useless everything he did since his arrival to the city and even before that, during the days working for Bulgarin in Europe. A long and painful way which Niko took 10 years to go through.

I've always killed him, but I agree with something. When sparing him, Niko's reaction is better. He has the chance to forget the pain and leave everything behind.

Did you see the frightened ones? Did you hear the falling bombs? Did you ever wonder...

...why we had to run for shelter when the promise of a brave new world unfurled beneath a clear blue sky?

It depends. I choose not to kill him my first play through. At that point Niko was so fed up with killing and ready to leave that all behind. He was beginning to fall for Kate, whom he felt was much too good for him. He grew so much as a person throughout the story, I think he would have spared Darko...but exact Revenge on Dimitri.

If I kill Darko, I choose Deal. I don't see Niko doing the same thing twice.

@PhillBellic: How about getting drunk together at Comrades to salute good ol' Uncle Vlad?

Played "That special someone" today. Still gives me chills. And then killing this scumbag Dimitri, it feels so good.

Fun fact: when I killed Dimitri and entered my car to drive away from the Platypus, "Schweine" was playing on Vladivostok. It came full circle, "Schweine" was also playing when I got off the Platypus and into Roman´s cab in "The Cousins Bellic" on this playthrough. :)

Darko betrayed and killed close friends for money. I believe in justice, so I always kill him.

Also, I find it a waste to spend most of the game looking for someone who deserves to die only to spare him in the end.

Might not be canon but it's what I would do.

But the dialogue between Niko and Roman that happens after sparing him is an A-Grade writing.

My playthrough is sparing Darko, then doing the Deal, it will make more sense because right after Roman is shot dead, Niko will say in regret "he told me to leave it, I LEFT IT!", referencing Roman past advice about sparing Darko. Edited by SuperGTFan

The dialogue between them after you kill Darko is more interesting for me.

Niko tells Roman that he still feels empty, despite getting his revenge. But he tells Florian that Darko has finally paid for his crimes - This is one of the reasons I kill Darko, we get justice in the end.

In letting Darko Brevic go, it would seem that Niko took Illena Faustin's advice "Please no more killing", to heart.

Well, after "The special someone" there are some serious massacres in the final missions, so I guess the "no more killing" good intention didn´t last too long. :D

The first few playthroughs I killed him, but when I after listening to the dialogue again, it struck me with Niko saying that he felt empty from it. I spare him now, because when we see Darko, we see that him selling out his comrades for money didn't exactly get him far in life. If Darko some how went on to becoming successful, killing him would be more satisfying, but seeing him as the mess he is ten years on - far worse than Niko, we see that it haunts him everyday as much as it does Niko, if not more. I spare Darko because it's clear he's suffering from his mistakes, and why end it? Killing Darko to hear him mutter "Thank you...", it's what he wants, he's glad to be killed off so he never has to suffer for his mistake.

Niko came to Liberty City to hunt down the traitor, and he sticks to that cause until that very moment. From the beginning, to breaking down Florian's house with his guns out, it didn't change anything. Niko saw Darko in the state that he was, and that's why you get the decision to walk away or kill him. I don't think the storyline was wasted because you can walk away from it all.

My decision was to execute him. I mean what he did was totally a deal breaker. It was a shall not forgive nor forget. Once you get innocent people to parish, its the big sleep for you. And I know you can't bring those people back but its just poetic justice.

I let Darko live, seeing as Niko seems more satisfied by that decision.

The first and only time I killed Darko was the first time I played the game. At that time I really wasn't thinking, I simply concluded that I had finally found the man that betrayed his friends so long ago which caused so many deaths of my friends and family. However, after pulling the trigger I didn't feel satisfied. Something didn't seem right. So I started thinking about the path that got Niko to the point of being face to face with Darko.

Remembering Niko's backstory and how it affected his life made me rethink my decision to kill Darko. Yes, 10 years of absolute destruction at the hands of Niko would seem to make sparing this man's life pointless but in actuallity it showed how Niko had grown over the years. He didn't realize it until he was faced with the real deal in front of him.

The time spent in Liberty, Niko had been tricked, shot at, betrayed, hated, lied to, loved, and used as a weapon of destruction. He also had made close friends, fallen in love, and gotten to know his cousin again. I believe Roman played a major role in getting Niko to spare Darko. He encouraged Niko to move on with life after meeting Florian and seeing how he had changed over the years. Roman was an optimist for a reason. He had to try to convince his cousin that better days were ahead. Throughout the game small hints of those better days were sprinkled around.

Each playthrough now, I always spare Darko. The way that his life turned out to be is satisfying enough. He gained nothing but demons to fight for the rest of his life.

GTA IV Masterpiece. :)

I have a very similar way of thinking, and approach to the game as you. The first time I plated the game I killed Darko, and I too felt empty afterwards.

My first play through, I killed him just to see what the end result would be since he was stressed as an important of the game, I guess to say. When I had replayed the story, I chose to let Darko live because he is a broken shell of his self, apart from being a drug addict also. He knew what he had done was wrong and he was paying for it, killing him would just end his suffering. Letting Darko live would result in him continuing to live in that suffering and knowing what he had done each day, that was more of a punishment than anything else, I believe.
