So I haven't been around here for a long time and I see a lot of new people around. I'm just curious what everyone does these days for employment and what do you think of your job?

I'll start. Since April of 2014 I've been employed with the federal government of Canada as a corrections officer (or cx1). I like my job, but it can be extremely stressful at times. For example I work in a maximum security institution and I've personally witnessed three stabbings happen in front of me, and I'm sure that's not the worst of what I'll see by the end of my career. The wages are very good starting out and there are opportunities for advancement.

Anyway, enough about me, I want to know what you guys are up to.

I deliver pizzas. Is working as a corrections officer any good? I've seen offers come up for it but I dunno if it'd be any good or not.

I can't speak for the US, but in Canada it's a pretty good gig. We start at 60k a year, whereas most state pens in the US start around 38k. Plus in Canada we only have 20,000 federal inmates (roughly 40,000 federal and provincial) , and the US has 2 million (total incarceration). So with prison overcrowding, I'm thinking it might be a little more dangerous south of the border.

Edit: Meta might know more about the US system as he used to work at an institution.

I live by a prison, and you can always tell who works there by how expensive their car looks.

I've jumped around a bit over the years, from intelligence analysis to client risk management consultancy to higher education, but these days I work for an information security consultancy firm, specifically in incident response, attack detection and threat intelligence.

You did IR at uni right? Any tips on making myself more employable and actually getting a job when I graduate?? Thanks.

Mr. Scratch

Bartending, it's a bittersweet job. Wouldn't exactly call it a career, nor do I plan on it becoming one.

Well sir, I step in front of cars and sue the drivers. It's a bad job, but somebody's gotta do it.

In reality I'm working at a law firm as an intern till' I get through law school, when I'll (hopefully) join the Prosecution Office full time.

Thanks. The graduate job climate's pretty different these days AFAIK but my advice would be- there are lots of little boutique consultancy type firms that work in the market- they're a good place to start looking for roles. There's less competition than conventional grad schemes and the like, and roles there come down more to tailoring yourself to the interests of the company and the individual likely to be doing it (often you'll get a name if you get an interview, dig up everything you can and don't be afraid to demonstrate what you can learn just from a name and a company.)

Also, as boring as it might sound, the insurance and risk/compliance companies always have places for IR types. They're really good places to work.

I'm not still employed, still don't have a career. Planning to study my master degree in international law sphere, since my perfection is international relations now. After that, i can start my career at ministry of foreign affairs, i guess.

Davo the Assassin

Currently working a graduate internship at my old university, coordinating a major overhaul of the content contained on one of the department's webpages. Lots of policy for me.

It's three months, so not what I'd call a career. But hopefully some valuable experience leading to something else. Plus it pays minimum wage at a full working week so I guess I can't complain too much!

I've been doing landscaping since I was 15 over the summers and I still have yet to learn how to use the mowers.

Kind of a handyman for IT. I currently am working on this project, where a customer was trying to make himself an ERP, but f*cked himself sideways with deadlines and costs. I'm there trying to manage the whole thing from a clusterf*ck of a mess that it is now into a completely usable system. I'm also doing programming and database administration, but I try stick to project management, because that's what I really like.
