How to Get Updates for Windows XP until 2019

Recommended Posts

Most people know what Windows XP support was ended by Microsoft in April of 2014. Therefore, people choosing to continue using Windows XP will face security issues due to Microsoft no longer supplying XP security updates.

This changes now, as a new trick will allow XP users to receive security updates until 2019. The trick is shipped through a registry tweak. The reason this is possible is that Microsoft is still supplying updates for a similar version of Windows called Windows Embedded POSReady 2009. It is based on the Windows XP core, so updates are (to an extent) interchangeable.

(Be sure to make a backup of the system, using system restore. Any damage to your PC is done at your risk.)

-Not working on x64 versions of XP, because they use a different kernel version (5.2) instead of the x86 version of XP (5.1)-

Before you do these steps, be sure to make a backup of the system, using system restore, so in the case of a failure, to be able to recover your PC, if your computer doesn't work afterwards. Since Microsoft does not endorse this action, your computer might be messed up if the procedure is not done properly.

Step one: Download this .reg file, open it up and confirm the prompt: LINK: https://www.mediafire.com/?db7ktetcpiepsrj

Step two: Launch Windows Update/Microsoft Update and check for updates.

Step three: Enjoy your desired updates.

This method is recommended to be used only on PCs that cannot handle Windows 7 or 8, or if you are just using XP as a virtual image. If your computer can handle Windows 7 or newer, the wisest decision would be to upgrade to 7/8.

Or, y'know, you could not use an unsupported operating system with serious unpatched vulnerabilities that, even with updates, will remain so.

Well, if someone still uses a very old PC then what else is there to do...

My mom still has a 2002 PC with Windows XP on it. I don't even bother testing how Windows 7 would run on this machine, since it has a single core Pentium 4.

I still don't get why someone would like to use an outdated, unsupported and vulnerable version of Windows which was manufactured for computers like 13 years ago.

Because it´s the best Windows system. I am still using XP without any problems.

Except the unpatchrd PrivEsc exploit that allows an attacker to run code as SYSTEM, and the RCE vulnerability which means you can completely own any system running it with a crafted HTTP request.

Yeah, "without problems" until you get popped with Fiesta Exploit Kit and get Neverquest with a side helping of TorrentLocker.

I could accept people running XP in air gapped environments where it's simply necessary for running proprietary SCADA or other critical software, but running it on a PC used for internet browsing when YouTube intermittently serves up exploit kits via advertising is utterly moronic.

You're right.

Another acceptable reason would be for people who want a Legacy PC or for those who use XP on a Virtual Machine.

Windows Vista and older aren't good for networking anymore, for the most part. Most websites don't work on outdated systems, either because of the browser or just because of the system itself. Browsing on 9x is almost impossible these days, with a few exceptions.

My tutorial was meant for the ones using either an XP Virtual Machine, a legacy PC or for those who cannot upgrade to 7/8 for various reasons.

I know a lot of people are gamers on this forum and Linux isn't the most practical for gaming. But a good option for people that don't use their PC for gaming, and have an outdated operating system and want to upgrade, is Linux.

Linux has some other problems, it has no worcking graphical interface, so you have to use comandline. Also there are some problems with drivers. But yousing Linux only for net activities and Windows XP parallel for everithing else could be a comfortable solution.

Every consumer distro of Linux has a GUI. Don't talk about things you're clearly clueless on.

Virtually every mainstream Linux distro has a GUI. Some features may not be available in GUI and my personal preference is to use the CLI when configuring various applications but that's just me.

In the same respect Windows has more features available in it's CLI that it's GUI. Something as simple as creating a bootable USB in Windows can't be performed natively in GUI but it takes about 20 seconds using the CLI for people that can be bothered to learn a few commands without relying on 3rd party freeware which half the time you have no idea where it came from nor what else it's installing in the background.

Apologies for the rant but I'm always security conscious and generally prefer Linux over Winblows anyday.

You should read more precise. I was tallking about worcking GUI for Linux. There are many GUIs for Linux, but none of them is really worcking the same simple way like a Windows GUI. Many GUI functions are not implemented or bugy.

l o l still clueless

There are plenty of working GUIs, implemented or even change your own. They are just as user friendly as Windows.

and Windows isn't buggy? Pft

That's utter bollocks. I've got Mint in front of me right now and the Cinnamon UI is less buggy than Windows 8's.

I newer said Windows isn't buggy. Windows 8 is the woth one ever. The buggs in Windows is les about GUI, but other stuff. The bigest weeknes of Windows is networcking, because of al that build in gaps.

Windows 8 is the worst one ever.

Have you tried Windows Millenium Edition? Now that's a glitchy and unstable product. It was already outdated when it got released, as a bonus.

Yes I did. I had an old PC runing with that system for about 10 year until the HD died. That was may be not the best Windows system, but if I have a choice only between Millenium and 8, I would take Millenium.

10 years..with Windows ME?

You must be kidding. That OS doesn't last on a PC for 3 weeks without crashing on startup. Especially an older PC. Still, if it could keep on working, how could it still be able to run after 10 years, considering that Windows files tend to get corrupted quite easly from use.

While 8 is not a very good Operating System either, it is considerably more stable. I've been using W8 for a few months already.

ME ran on the outdated DOS kernel. 8 works on the better and more stable NT kernel. DOS was outdated even in 2000. Hell, it was outdated even when Windows 98 was released, but Windows 98 was more or less stable.

Your English is so bad I don't even know what you're saying, so it's probably wrong. lol

Anyways, I liked XP. So it's a great option for those that can't get a new operating system because their machine couldn't handle it. :^:

I was not using that ME PC every day all 10 years, only the first 3. I bought that PC 2000 and the last time i Was able to start it was about 2010. I don´t want to say that ME was a good system, but it´s not so bad, people say about it. I have to cofes that all my PCs run without net conection, that could be an explanation they all worcked good, even with ME.

Well, that's a matter of perspective. You like ME more than 8.

I prefer 8. 8 has its own problems and bugs...but..at least it's somewhat stable.

I think this has run its course.
