Cudwieser
My friend that says he only buy American cars sold his '98 Chevy Suburban and bought a Chevy Trax, the trax is built in Korea. (A dipsh*t from my high school talking about my '79 Firebird) "No it's not a muscle car, its a roadster." He's partially right. It's a pony car. That being said, kid's still a moron for calling it a roadster. Where he got that I will never know. Now, I have to ask, what engine do you have in your Firebird? Originally a Chevy 350 small block, but before money and time became an issue I was putting together a Chrysler 440 that I salvaged from an auto yard. You can't put a Mopar motor in that! Build a Pontiac 400 if you ever can afford to! Well, okay, you can, but the way I was raised was to put Fords in Fords, GMs in GMs, and Chryslers in Chryslers. You especially put a Pontiac in a Pontiac. You know, I never got into that whole car brand pride thing. I'm a man of chaos, and when it comes to cars, all I want is solid steel and raw power. How I get it is all the same to me. The end result is always gonna be tearing through gears and high RPMs I have to agree with JRC purely on the principle that parts are made to be matched with others from the same manufacturer. Ageing aside a ford transmission is designed and tested with ford engines and so forth. Some third parties will provide a boost, but the fundimental remain, keep things matched. It means less adaptation, less potential weaknesses and ultimately more reliability. Unless you are making a rod or dragster then keep things simple and use matched parts. Also do your homework (just like elias7001's friend shout have )
Average white guy
My friend that says he only buy American cars sold his '98 Chevy Suburban and bought a Chevy Trax, the trax is built in Korea. He should have done his research. And.. he gave up a '98 Suburban for an ugly, Korean built car? The man needs help.

But at the time the 350 had to go, and when I went looking for motors I came across the 440 pretty quick and given how intact it was it would have been a waste to not get it. Even if I don't drop it into the Pontiac I at least have a restored 440 I can sell. Edited November 7, 2015 by Input
Cudwieser
That's true. Or sell the Pontiac. Or what about a second car (in time). Maybe a demon or Dart (or a magnum if you're brave). Fantansies aside (what I'd do for a Cyclone Spoiler (71-72)) please keep us informed of how it all goes or if you decide to up rate a Merc SLK with the
Killerdude
You went from the cheapest motor to build to one of the most expensive motors to build and I can't figure out why. JRC99

Carlover325
Overheard a customer talking on the phone at my store. He was talking about needing a new head gasket for his car. I think whoever he was on the phone with asked how much it was going to cost. His response was amazing. "I estimate it probably won't cost more than $200 for parts and labor." I nearly started laughing.
sivispacem
In all fairness, a head gasket change on some cars required disassembling basically the entire thing. V6 and V8 Audis from the early noughties being the worst IMO. It's a 6-hour job just to change the cambelt on a B5 S4 or Allroad 2.7 Biturbo. *MURDOC* 1 AMD Ryzen 5900X (4.65GHz All-Core PBO2) | Gigabye X570S Pro | 32GB G-Skill Trident Z RGB 3600MHz CL16 EK-Quantum Reflection D5 | XSPC D5 PWM | TechN/Heatkiller Blocks | HardwareLabs GTS & GTX 360 Radiators Corsair AX750 | Lian Li PC-O11 Dynamic XL | EVGA GeForce RTX2080 XC @2055MHz | Sabrant Rocket Plus 1TB Sabrant Rocket 2TB | Samsung 970 Evo 1TB | 2x ASUS ROG Swift PG279Q | Q Acoustics 2010i | Sabaj A4
Svip
Which is why $200 is a ridiculously low price. I am getting head gasket changed on my DS, which is set to be a 11 hour job. I expect it to cost me somewhere between $1500 and $3000.
sivispacem
Oh, I thought he was implying it was expensive. It's probably not too far off the mark for most more accessible engines- 3 hours labour or so. Carlover325
The lowest I've seen ever charged for a head gasket replacement at a shop was a little over $1,000. For the Dodge Intrepid I towed, the shop wanted $1700. The car was only worth about $1500 (when it was running perfectly).
Irish45455
My brother asked me why his Honda wasn't running right, and if he should change the VTEC, because some jack ass told him that sometimes the VTEC wears out over time and that it needs to be replace every 50,000 miles. I went to a car cruise this weekend because it was nice out and I sh*t you not, this ricer said his VQ35 in his 350Z would blow the wheels off a '70 Charger that had just driven by that sounded gnarly as all hell, because he added newer eight inch pistons, a cambered crankshaft and lightweight rear subframe, which makes his car hook better on the strip. There is no shortage of ricers around here who say the dumbest crap I have ever heard in my life... From "The small lip on my front bumper gives me a thousand pounds of downforce over fifty miles per hour" to "I took off the stock turbocharger on my car because it was using too much gas and making me lose horsepower". SouthLand
Have they never driven an N/A diesel? They are the absolute epitome of dangerously slow. I agree. My mother-in-law owns a Peugeot 106 diesel N/A and it's very slow. Driving through a acceleration lane with this car, was a pain in the ass. Oh, and the engine was extremely loud. You might not care if the engine sounds nice, but it wasn't the case, it sounded like a tractor. PSA has made a lot of cheap and dirty diesel cars that are very annoying to drive in the past. K1FFLOM
Have they never driven an N/A diesel? They are the absolute epitome of dangerously slow. But the in-line 6, n/a 4.2 litre Diesel in the Toyota Landcruiser is unbeatable in Outback driving. It has torque like a tractor and does it's work perfectly. Pity it has been replaced by a V8 Diesel a couple of years ago.
sivispacem
Gonna have to disagree there. Neither 129bhp nor 210lb ft is enough for a vehicle that size or weight. I'd have the turbocharged V8 over the canal boat and bus engine every day of the week. Cudwieser
Maybe when you dump the clutch at anything above 5000 rpm, but seriously though. Transmissions, Differentials and in somecases reduction axels are all arguments to the contrary. Saying that though I'd love to try a car that does 5000 rpm at the wheels. rodomsz
