Dumbest things you've heard non car people say

"You enjoy driving!?! what's wrong with you? You need help if you find enjoyment in driving."

"I don't care how good you are, everyone is a bad driver and therefore endangering many lives."

These two annoy me the most. It's going to be hard to explain to my folks why I'll be going on pointless drives out in the countryside (which we live right next to) for hours... I think my mom would understand as she does like cars a bit but not sure about my dad (the one who used to own a f*ckin 370z) because cars are just cars to him. Eh.

Yeah, they believe that human drivers and self-driving cars can't coexist in the future. To them, car enthusiasts are "anti-social losers who can't sacrifice their hobby for the better of mankind"(actual quote I found on Youtube). They just expect millions of car enthusiasts to find new hobbies*.

Luckily, these people are going to have a long, painful wait because self-driving cars will not be mandatory anytime soon.

The worst of it is that we are talking a social decline into idiocracy (to quote the film). Most commentors are young and lazy c**ts who will do nothing for themselves and demand you do everything for them. They are the desperate arseholes who would willfully starve before accepting a basic human need to react to need. I will say one thing though, the bidet industry will be in rude health in the next decade given no ones desire to wipe their own arse.

P.S Which is more dangerous. Sucking eggs or teaching your granny how to do it?

If they want to be carted around by a computer, that's fine with me. It's their "everyone will have to" standpoint that pisses me off. Taking drunks and distracted idiots off the roads isn't enough. The goal is to remove everyone whether or not they have a bad driving record. It's not worth the risk because anyone could crash. You could crash tomorrow or drive your entire life without ever coming close to crashing, but we still can't take the risk. Luckily though, self-driving cars won't be taking over anytime soon so tough sh*t for them.

I'm just gonna leave this here...

Oh sh*t! Where do I begin. On it's own merit it is interesting but realistically it's utter bollox. Firstly it isn't expressly about self driving vehicles but autonomy in general and more specifically AI. The most occurant cases are likely to be with self driving vehicles, but again the video is less about the cars, more the ethics of preprogrammed autonomy. What he actually says is pretty on point except for hugely glaring lack of research and scope to his argument. Ultimately the automous tech is capable of analysing the problem and should be able to spot 'safe spaces' (keep that phrase in mind) for the car. The greater instict is largely to create a big enough space to avoid accidents as they occur. After that people often swerve, spotting as they go. It is only when you loose control that sh*t truly goes to pot.

In any case the vid doesn't really reflect self driving cars which as AWG rightly points out won't be a thing for some time. There will need to be a massive infrasture change to begin with to accomodate the cars and their interactions. That's going to cost trillions and take forever to debug. After the standard is set there is the roll out to come which'll cost trillions more and Christ knows how long to implement and all this for a few cars to do laps of the maps (pun intended).

Yep, self-driving cars being the majority is decades away. They require clean roads with visible markings and there are still miles of f*cked up gravel and dirt roads here in the U.S.. Hell, my neighborhood is a prime example as most of the roads around it are oil and chip. Bumpy, narrow, pot holed roads from hell that won't be replaced anytime soon. Driving on them requires attention and cooperation between drivers because of how narrow they are. Many times I'll have to pull over to let oncoming traffic pass because of parked cars and waste bins.

How will self-driving cars decide what to do on these roads?

Somethings require the human touch.

I hate self-driving cars. In fact, I've never met a Tesla owner that is a car guy.

My biggest fear about all of this is the lack of autonomy that forced passengership would give the citizenry and how it could expand the police state. This could apply to no longer being allowed to drive powerful sports cars a la Red Barchetta but it could also go something like this:

Your clothes smell like weed when you pop in the car?

The car senses this and re-routes to a police station

I highly doubt that people would own their own cars anymore, what would be the point? We will just have a sort of national self-driving Uber and with this in mind, what about the monetization of the service?

"Hello, welcome to the Tesla Self-Driving experience! For $11.99 a month you may upgrade to Self-Driving Premium. Self-Driving Premium includes bluetooth audio connect-ability, shorter routes with less advertisements and slightly higher speed."

All I know is that if this bullsh*t becomes our reality I, and hopefully some of you, are going to go out like in the movie Vanishing Point. Just ride and ride into the sunset until them blue, blue meanies rip the last of our beautiful free soles from this planet.

We could all take over the American Southwest and rule it in a Mad Max style. Live within a loud and proud display of internal combustion madness. We'll all scream at the top of our lungs... Keep your ugly, autonomous Zuckerboxes away from here, pussies! As we tear white-hot ass across the desert.

Tesla did prove a point, that electric cars shouldn't be 'boring', 'ugly' or 'slow'. Sure, they are to cars what Mac is to PCs, you won't be able to make a Mad Max Tesla just like you won't be a ble to make a gaming Mac to play recent releases in 4K, but they are pretty cool nevertheless.

Don't get me wrong, I love gasoline as much as the next person, but I'd love to own a Tesla myself, even tho Brazil isn't the best place to own one. And no, nobody in the near future will force you to own a self-driving car. Sure, they're safer and stuff, but the technology is still evolving, and cars are around for so long that cities were built around them. They won't take away all traffic signs and street lights because some people own self-driving cars.

Just think that self-driving cars isn't a technology to you, it is a technology for widower grandma who doesn't see very well and doesn't have enough reflexes or movements to drive, but she still wants to get to the bingo night by herself because she refuses to be dependent of other people because that would mean she's getting old, or to popular college girl who wants to get to the next Starbucks but can't keep her cellphone away for more than ten seconds and would be a risk for the next 3 cars in front of her. These stereotypes are prone to causing accidents that could be avoided with self-driving cars.

So yeah, go ahead, crucify me for my opinion.

And damn, we really got off-topic...

Yeah, except Tesla's are incredibly boring looking. Very run of the mill sedan, I'm sorry but its hard for me to mean it when I call any car without engine noise "exciting."

I agree that self-driving cars are nice for certain people. The same way I'm not as much of a gamer to build a PC, I stay on consoles, the issue is. They most definitely will make self-driving technology mandatory. The government is always trying to grab power and take away freedoms. This is their greatest frontier to do it yet. Look at the self-driving tech YouTube videos. The comment sections are littered with people crowing about the death of passenger operated cars.

Most definitely, but the comment sections of self-driving car videos say otherwise... Though, I'm not too worried as most of them are probably naive kids who know nothing about cars(and driving them), city planning or long it takes to make infrastructure changes.

With that I meant it sort of in a Sleeper car way: A plain boring family sedan from the outside, that has the acceleration to beat most supercars off the line, unlike other electric cars, like the infamous Prius or the less infamous Volt.

Oddly the Prius uses less power to conserve charge where as the teslas kind of drain charge to get the acceleration. Let the Prius actually burn the charge and it can accelerate like a beast. Funnily the rules of mpg and conservation apply to Electric vehicles as much as ICE vehicles, the significance being efficiency (electric wins this one)

That thought experiment also fails to realize that when we do get to the point of self driving cars, they will also communicate with each other to be able to collectively avoid threats. Tesla already has some pretty cool system that does so without the need for other cars on the road, being able to prevent a lot of accidents will before they happen.

If there's more connected cars on the road, it becomes even easier.

But yeah, still years away. Probably going to start on special lanes on main thoroughfares, where the cars will have to be limited in speed since they will drive automatically.

It will be great for us drivers, though. No longer having to worry about douchetards driving their cars while playing with their smartphones and stuff. Their cars confined to the self-driving lanes while we get to roam free. Their cars limited to the main roads while we get all the rest of the grid. It'll be joyful!

Using this logic, I'll be able to take my car and drive it down a highway full of self-driving cars as fast as I want, since self-driving cars are so good at detecting accidents, they'll just swerve out of my way. There are lots of other 'paradoxes' and problems we need to solve before traffic with self-driving cars is safer to everyone.

Exactly! If self-driving cars are so smart, there should be no need to ban manual cars. Seeing as they can predict 'any' accident, they should be able to predict a human driver's f*ck-up and avoid collision. So therefore, car enthusiasts shall retain their road sovereignty well after self-driving cars become mainstream.

That's quite the leap, though. There are safe speeds for every different road. That's why speed limits were invented. Even if there were no other cars on the road, there is still the maximum speed that you, an untrained driver (as compared to pilots who are used to driving at extremely high speeds), are able to handle.

Gnocchi Flip Flops

Was reading Quora (god why) last night and a thread came up on what the most overrated pleasure was. And of course, somebody said car rides. So now she's got my attention. Let's see her reasoning:

Basically, as usual, her interpretation of cars was that they were just status symbols and that road trips are long and boring and tedious. -sigh- And then a supposed "car enthusiast" popped in and agreed saying after 30 minutes car rides were boring.

I'm honestly tired of the misconception that cars are just that, status. It's gotten to the point where if someone is so adamant on proving/believing that cars are nothing more than that or just modes of transport, I'll get bored of them and not want to bother with them. It just strikes me as simple mindedness. You don't have to like cars but drawing assumptions as to why people do is so tacky and ignorant. And I've also never understood the hate for car rides. It honestly astonishes me how bored and nonobservant people are of their surroundings. I rarely ever get bored on road trips. It could be 2 hours or 10 hours. It's not boring. I look at everything.

Is it a misconception, though?

In my native Brazil, cars ARE a symbol of status. People pay insane markups on brand new cars because of the status that comes attached with owning one. People look down on others for driving older cars. People look down on others for driving cars without the "latest" features. It's appalling.

But I can get why some people might not enjoy the ride and whatnot. It all depends on your experiences with it. Growing up, me and my family did many roadtrips. Including several yearly ones to visit my grandparents, and that involved a 1000km drive through some pretty sh*tty roads, which meant it would take us around 14 hours driving to arrive there. But they were a blast for me and my siblings. But if you grew up with a crappy car experience, then it follows you won't appreciate it as much.

Of course, these people are wrong and cars are awesome.

Just to ask, how many of those complaining are actual drivers, and how many are commuters. Bear in mind being a passenger and a driver are two different experiences as are driving and commuting.

It can be fun to be a passenger, but it is infinitely more involving to drive. Also to commute isn't driving. You are moving the same vehicle through the same slow motions day and daily. IT IS BORING, but... Take the same car to an open road with nowhere to go, nowhere to be and time away from the world and driving become cathartic for some, exciting for others, but far from a chore or boring.

It isn't that there is a misconception there is a loss of context. To be stuck in the same car going nowhere fast is boring (and aggrevating). You are emotionally and psychologically drained and so enjoyable things can seem dull. Take the stress and strain away and things can recontextualise and rejuvenate themselves into something exciting.

I overheard this today... "The government should tax people who drive vehicles that are 20 years or older"

His reasoning was, "Older cars are death traps, pollute more and cause unnecessary wear to roads."

Uh, buddy if I want to risk my own health by driving an older vehicle that's my choice and in no way affects you.

He is right about one thing. Older cars do pollute more than newer ones, but I hope he knows that cars 20 years or older are the minority. They're accountable for what, maybe 5% of all pollution? Not really enough to warrant a bullsh*t tax in an attempt to slow climate change.

Now, unnecessary wear to roads... I don't know what to say to that one. That's a whole new level of stupid.

First, the pollution depends on the car. A mid 90's Honda is going to pollute less and be more effiecient than a Camaro of the same year. And keeping your old car as a daily isn't a bad idea, as long as it's reasonably effiecient (no one wants to daily a car/truck that gets around 11 mpg).

Second, death traps? Honestly, there are WAY more factors playing into your survivability in a crash than just the age of your car. For example, were you or the other driver(s) distracted? Who was speeding and who wasn't?

Third, older cars are cheaper. That's the main appeal of an older vehicle. They're affordable to lower class citizens who don't have the money and income to afford a brand new car. And these people already have enough on their plate, they don't need a tax just because they own an older car.

Even if there are some old gas hogs still putting about, it's not the end of the world. They don't rule the road anymore and the pollution they produce collectively probably has very little environmental impact. If any at all.

"no one wants to daily a car/truck that gets around 11 mpg" I must be the only one that does :turn:

Yep, waaay too many factors. There have been deaths in modern cars and survivors of crashes involving older cars. In the end there are no guarantees when it comes to driving. All you can do is buckle up, drive defensively and hope for the best possible outcome.

I'm just gonna leave this here...

I had to laugh at this highly rated comment on the video:

"In a world of self driving cars, why are people still riding motorcycles?"

Uhhh... because it's fun? And you only live once? And people enjoy riding motorcycles? Let's all safely tip-toe to our graves then, everything is so dangerous and scary!

Saw this on Facebook today:

"Why mofo's still be drivin' old ass cars; sh*ts trashy as f*ck. Get with the times;people."

They were talking about an early 70's Bronco that they saw in a Walgreens parking lot.

You'd think it'd be obvious why people drive old cars and trucks. For one, they're collectables now, worth a good amount of money. For another, some are very fun to drive. You won't get the same driving experience in a modern Impala as you would in a classic one. Lastly, it's NOT YOUR CAR. It's THEIR time and money. Why are you concerned with what other people are driving? Edited by InstaNoodles
