GingerIceCube
Hey, I just got GTA V for the PC. Or, I got it on launch day, but I only got around to installing it today, LOL. I really hate playing on a keyboard (I got the PC version for the better graphics, updates, etc. because I didn't want to buy a PS4 or xBone). But when I try to switch over to the gamepad in the settings, nothing's being detected. I have an xBox 360 controller that seems to be being picked up by my PC okay (I have all the drivers for it and such), but the game just isn't detecting it. Does anyone know the possible reason for this? Do 360 controllers not work for the PC version? Should I get a PC controller? Or maybe the game didn't download properly and there are some missing files? Any advice would be appreicated. I'm running Windows 7 and have a pretty good computer (far above the minimum requirements to run the game). Feel free to ask if you want my specs, but I don't think they're needed. Really, I'm just desperate to get some advice on controllers with the PC version so I can play already. >_<

Crimson Flam3s
Mine didn't even require drivers, and it's not a microsoft original -> Thrustmaster. Yeah but the originals usually do. Aftermarket gamepads are usually playable right away for some reason.
GingerIceCube
^ Yeah, I had the PC already, LOL. If I'd built the PC just for GTA V, I'd deserve every facepalming reaction pic in the world. XD Thanks for the replies, guys, but my computer actually did install the drivers as soon as I plugged in the controller. Maybe I should try uninstalling them and reinstalling them? I have no idea what's going on. X_X The controller is secondhand and constantly flashing. That might be a problem too?
lydianduck
I guess you could go to device manager and check if there's any conflicts there or a "!" symbol next to the controller drivers.

A fresh install can sometimes do wonders, altho the constant flashing is likely that it hasnt paired with a receiver. (EDIT: Press and hold the tiny button at the top of your controller (between the LB/RB buttons), while also pressing and holding the only button on your receiver, should only take a couple of secs and they'll pair) Edited April 23, 2015 by swirler
Confucious
Heya, You might want to check out the Logitech F310 gamepad. I got 2 of them really cheap off ebay. There is also a wireless version of this from logitech, but it cost a lot more. The person is still selling them. The only thing I have found different than playing on my PS3 with this game pad on PC is (to zoom in with a sniper rifle you need to tap the "mode button" then it will zoom the same way as a ps3. Just make sure that you to tap the "mode" button again when your through sniping, as other game functions won't work like they should with the "mode" light on. Hope this helps. Here is a link where I bought 1, or just t o look at it to buy elsewhere. Have a great night. http://www.ebay.com/itm/301433565741?_trksid=p2060353.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT (important note) I am running windows 7 ultimate. I dunno if this will matter with windows 8? But I did NOT, install any software, and I did not use the (later offered through windows update) drivers. It worked great with simple "plug and play". This controller also worked GREAT with the game pad unfriendly "Dragon Age Inquisition" for PC. lol Here is 1 of the wireless ones to look at as well. I have not tried it, but it looks decent. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Logitech-F710-2-4Ghz-Wireless-PC-Gamepad-Game-Controller/301501935783?_trksid=p2050601.c100272.m3467&_trkparms=aid%3D111001%26algo%3DREC.SEED%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D29558%26meid%3Dbdf0766b3af540b6863cefc0804ccefe%26pid%3D100272%26rk%3D1%26rkt%3D4%26mehot%3Dpp%26sd%3D301501935783%26clkid%3D5640897240933323785&_qi=RTM2067267 Edited April 23, 2015 by Confucious

Uh, you don't need any programs to use a DS4. Maybe you need a program for other games but GTA V supports DS4. I just plugged mine in and it worked straight away. The only thing is that it will show 360 buttons on screen instead of X/O/square/triangle. Touch pad/light bar/speakers don't work. GingerIceCube
Thanks again for the replies, guys. That bit about the flashing and not synching the controller is probably what the problem is. The thing is, my 360 controller doesn't work wirelessly, so I have to have it plugged in. When it's plugged in, the synching button is covered (at least, I think it is). So I'm not sure how I can go about synching it. Is there a button on the computer I need to press as well, I wonder? I'm thinking of getting a wireless PC controller today anyway, so I guess I'll know then what the problem is. Going into the gamepad in settings also might be an option, but I already tried that. The game just wasn't recognizing my controller, even though my computer seemed to be. -_-
TheMostKnowledgable
The xbox 360 controller is my favorite and is supported natively by more modern games than other controllers. If you get it, get the real 360 one, not the "for windows" version. It costs more but is exactly the same. The only difference is a stupid useless "status app" (a tiny box that pops and tells you it is plugged in when you click the lit up dashboard button that wouldn't be lit if it wasn't LOL) and a drivers installation disc with older 360 controller drivers than windows7 comes with. stretchx9
Yeah, they probably all use the same MS driver too. I just wish MS had incorporated accel on both sticks on my Xbox360...... So a standard XboX controller works just by plugging it in? I was looking into a controller for driving, but assumed I needed the Windows version for it to work. I plugged in my PS3 controller but the game doesn't seem to recognize it and I'm not interested in messing with drivers ect. If its a wireless 360 controller, you need this thingy (and the free drivers) http://www.ebay.com/itm/like/170998869529?lpid=82&chn=ps but as you said it doesn't work unless its plugged in via a plug n play kit, you cannot use your current controller. You will need to acquire another one that works properly (or buy a wired controller) You can only directly connect the controller to your PC if the controller is wired as in NOT wireless (THIS DOES NOT INCLUDE A PLUG N PLAY KIT). your 360 controller will NOT connect to your PC via a plug n play kit. GingerIceCube
Yeah, that sounds like a lot of pain, LOL. I'm just gonna buy a PC controller to cut out the bullsh*t. I'm pretty sure they only sell wireless PC controllers at my store. Is it possible to synch those with PCs, or do I need to do some stupid runaround for that as well? I'm talking about official Microsoft PC wireless controllers.

TaazR
You should just get the official 360 controller, wired preferably since they're cheaper and have a faster response time than wireless. I use it 90% of the time on GTA V since it just feels more immersive and trumps the mouse/keyboard in just about every way apart from shooting and navigating menus. GingerIceCube
Hey, guys. I got a PC Microsoft xBox controller (wireless), and it works a treat. I guess my 360 controllers were just too old or too secondhand to work, LOL. Either way, I don't mind. At least this way I'm not having to constantly unplug the controller from my 360 to my PC. Thanks for all the help and advice. <
Bitch n Dog Food
Too late for the OP, but for anyone else who might be having this problem...I had a similar issue with my 360 Controller once. My fix was: Device Manager > Right click on the controller device > Properties > Driver > Update Driver > Browse my computer for driver software > Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer > Select "Microsoft Common Controller for Windows Class" and accept the warnings/click yes. Never had any issues with detection after that. This was done after installing the controller driver from MS.
