X S
So, I have an older motherboard, an EVGA E757 with one PCI Express 2.0 x16 slot. I wanted to upgrade to a GTX 4GB 960, preferably something like this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814125778 Can this be done and do think I might suffer from any performance bottlenecks? Is PCI-E 3.0 really practical, or just another marketing gimmick?
yoječ
You shouldn't have any issues, I use everyday a GTX660 with a PCIe 2.0 mobo (ASUS P7P55D-E) and it runs totally fine. The performance difference between PCIe 2.0 and 3.0 is negligible.
X S
This is what I've been hearing. So I'm getting the sense that PCI-E 3.0 is mostly a gimmick at the point.
Andreaz1
Not really, just the higher capabilities aren't fully utilized by applications today but in the future there will probably be a difference.
yoječ
I'd doubt it, as even the difference between 1.1 and 2.0 is still very small: http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/NVIDIA/GTX_980_PCI-Express_Scaling/21.html
