Does it work with "Softest" shadows ?

Tried it already, no, just makes it slightly better (makes the difference smaller between low and high res shadows)

I suggest enabling nvidia shadow option, that made the differency more unnoticable.

I tried this tweak with Softest shadow, and guess what. I think it looks a little bit better. There are still low res shadows where they shouldn`t be, but I think the shadows got a little better.

About nvidia shadow option (PCSS), it has a huge performance hit, cant use it...

PS4

(Skip to 1:22:56 if it doesn't work)

Look on the right, in the wall. It's the exact same issue but on a sideways shadow. As I said, this is also on consoles, so it's definitely an overlook in the engine.

Nice find. well. thats f*cked up. No fix for that (rockstar wont fix it for sure)

Yeah, I have a feeling we may be stuck with this "detail box" but I would really like to see if we can get some kind of official response on it so all the guessing and placebo tweaking can stop. Whats the best way to get their attention .. ?

So, is there anyone who already reporting this issue to the R* Support? Don't hesitate to report and I'm sure they'll working immediately to fix it as best as they can.

If you mean on keyboard, yes. But it's possible with a controller if you slightly push up on the thumb stick.

There is a similar bug with one type of grass and with cars, other than these few odd graphical hitches the game is beyond visually stunning. (I'll post some detailed pics of what I mean)

I hope that they are working on a new patch for this.

Nice! Thanks for the response. Good luck fixing this.

Just so we don't get our hopes up, can you say if its even possible to get rid of this detail box around the player? Or just a bigger box?

From mission replay Caida Libre, the box is really noticeable for me... I have shadows and distance on max... I should not be seeing this f*cking box ever...

I understand it may be useful for low end systems, but come on Rockstar...? I'm not playing on a phone... I don't want to play it a graphic bubble... Fix your sh*t it's been 7 years in development... I'm sure this box has been noticed by the devs, but yea... Let's just do nothing about it and let modders fix it.

We're working along with AMD and NVIDIA to get most of these graphical issues sorted out.

OK, I guess I found temporary fix for shadow cascades.

1) Run the game and set Shadows setting on Sharp.

2) Open settings.xml file in Documents and edit these values

<Shadow_SplitZStart value="0.930000" /><Shadow_SplitZEnd value="0.890000" />
to these

<Shadow_SplitZStart value="1.000000" /> <Shadow_SplitZEnd value="0.000000" />
Works with Soft shadows too.

Nope.

Nice job. This is exactly the issue.

They are aware of it and are apparently working on a fix.

Meantime we can hurry up and wait.

They have increased the limits of the box with one of the latest patches but not by much. Given the PS4 suffers from the same thing, I don't think we'll be seeing a fix unless Rockstar is actually competent enough to want to modify anything in RAGE's graphical engine after it's already done.

Go to the hospital in LS that has the entrance with a huge roof on it. Inside the shadow you can actually see the box now, and for me it looked like they had changed it in height but not in width. Maybe it has always been this way, but now is even worse as I can see the box literally under the hospital entrance roof whereas I couldn't before.

This (temporary) fix works fine for me, and it sticks in the settings.xml as along as I don't play with in-game shadow settings.

Now, if I can only Change Vsync from 59 to 60 go and get it to stick in the settings.xml file. My monitor can be set for 59 or 60 but the game still puts game Vsync at at 59.

To be honest, the blurred shadows (which are outside of the "box") looks more real than those unrealisticaly sharp shadows... :D You'll never see a tree leaf shadow on the ground in real life. Or a fence shadow like that, or the electric cable shadow from the poles... (if the light source is the sun)

Except it definitely doesn't seem to be an issue, it's intended for performance. It's been like this on every version of the game and looks like it was meant to be that way, the only problem is R* didn't give PC users the option to change it.

Totally agree. I'm using softest shadows since they look the best to me and apparently offer an actual performance improvement over the sharper shadows.

The transition outside of the detail box is still obnoxious though and very hard to unsee once you realize you travel in a box.

Don't go outside much? :p

That's just a joke, but you can see these things. Sometimes they are soft, sometimes harder:

I think I have bad news for all of us. This is the screen shot that nvidia uploaded for their performance guide as you can see they have the same problem with a bit of the shadow near the bottom

eONPVNg.png

And here's an image that I took of the same area using softest shadows

9naoFpc.jpg

So unless Rockstar fixes this problem by changing the size of the cascading shadow boxes by a large amount, I think we're screwed. Also this "problem" was on the PS4 version as you can see in the gallery below.

http://imgur.com/a/Dp2C4

Sadly the only thing you can really do is change the shadow setting to Nvidia PCSS which is so blurry is generally makes in unnoticeable. But for me this "bug" ruins the game as it is extremely distracting. also grass does the same thing, same with the garbage all over the ground.
