this bug is caused by game, not settings...

Right on.

Yea, seriously. It is not happening to me now, at all. I had it for a brief time at one point after launch and haven't been able to cause it again.

make a vid please, and post your specs.

Does the grass distance scaling bug happen to you ??

I've noticed this less when turning on HD shadows, though its still somewhat present. Understandable to render more detail closer to the player but the difference is a bit ridiculous. Its probably a bug, and will hopefully be patched.

That wire fence is what gets my goat....so infuriating sometimes...try turning the nvidia PCSS soft shadows on, you won't even see the wire mesh at all when you have that setting turned on...

I'll try to make a couple vids showing the differences there.

Video made, uploading. Couldn't change mine to appear different anymore, but I seem to have the "reverse" of this bug. Where the area looks too darkened in previous vids in the topic, my "bubble around the player" seems brighter.

If I had to guess I'd say it's parralax occlusion mapping scaling, maybe they don't use mipmaps on it or made custom mips that don't match well enough, you can see it about "an inch" above the hood of the car, watch the grass (let hd process if it hasn't yet, it's short so should be done by the time anyone sees this):

lol sh*tty youtube doesn't even show it (not clearly at least), hang on a sec, i'll upload rawdog.

edit: okay, watch it non-fullscreen and it shows better.

Edit2: Here is the uploaded rawdog, I never used this site before (in case it doesn't work), but here is the link, file weighs 118mB:

it would be the best if you could write your settings.xml file here...you can find it in User/Documents/Rockstar Games/GTA V

have you guys tried to edit this values in settings.xml?

   <Shadow_Distance value="0.000000" /> <Shadow_LongShadows value="false" /> <Shadow_SplitZStart value="0.000000" /> <Shadow_SplitZEnd value="0.000000" />/
?

why are those values are zero for you? They're like this for me:

<Shadow_Distance value="1.000000" /><Shadow_LongShadows value="false" /><Shadow_SplitZStart value="0.930000" /><Shadow_SplitZEnd value="0.890000" />

Settings file I am playing with currently, not my final settings, I'm still tweaking and deciding what to scale back people should backup theirs and paste this in just to see if it doesn't have the same problems anymore. Just be sure to only paste it down to the part where your own GPU name is:
<Settings><version value="27"/><configSource>SMC_AUTO</configSource><graphics><Tessellation value="3"/><LodScale value="1.000000"/><PedLodBias value="0.200000"/><VehicleLodBias value="0.000000"/><ShadowQuality value="3"/><ReflectionQuality value="2"/><ReflectionMSAA value="0"/><SSAO value="2"/><AnisotropicFiltering value="8"/><MSAA value="4"/><MSAAFragments value="0"/><MSAAQuality value="0"/><TextureQuality value="2"/><ParticleQuality value="2"/><WaterQuality value="2"/><GrassQuality value="2"/><ShaderQuality value="2"/><Shadow_SoftShadows value="5"/><UltraShadows_Enabled value="false"/><Shadow_ParticleShadows value="true"/><Shadow_Distance value="1.000000"/><Shadow_LongShadows value="true"/><Shadow_SplitZStart value="0.930000"/><Shadow_SplitZEnd value="0.890000"/><Shadow_aircraftExpWeight value="0.990000"/><Shadow_DisableScreenSizeCheck value="false"/><Reflection_MipBlur value="true"/><FXAA_Enabled value="false"/><TXAA_Enabled value="false"/><Lighting_FogVolumes value="true"/><Shader_SSA value="true"/><DX_Version value="2"/><CityDensity value="0.800000"/><PedVarietyMultiplier value="0.200000"/><VehicleVarietyMultiplier value="0.200000"/><PostFX value="3"/><DoF value="true"/><HdStreamingInFlight value="true"/><MaxLodScale value="0.000000"/><MotionBlurStrength value="0.500000"/></graphics><system><numBytesPerReplayBlock value="9000000"/><numReplayBlocks value="36"/><maxSizeOfStreamingReplay value="1024"/><maxFileStoreSize value="65536"/></system><audio><Audio3d value="false"/></audio><video><AdapterIndex value="0"/><OutputIndex value="0"/><ScreenWidth value="1920"/><ScreenHeight value="1080"/><RefreshRate value="60"/><Windowed value="0"/><VSync value="2"/><Stereo value="0"/><Convergence value="0.100000"/><Separation value="0.000000"/><PauseOnFocusLoss value="1"/><AspectRatio value="0"/></video><VideoCardDescription>NVIDIA GeForce GTX 960</VideoCardDescription></Settings>

I get the same problem, even with all settings max, including all "advanced graphic options", sliders to max also.

Nowhere near my VRAM limit on my sig rig so it's not that either, problem is still there at certain times of day no matter what.

Have also seen it on the ground shadow from a chopper while flying it.

This is with the "softest" shadow setting

I sh*t you not I was going to post one called "Try My Settings!" and I was gonna say "Someone should" post that topic in that post :p lol! It should be done now.

Someone should post. that. thread.

It can be fore trying people's taste in visuals, trying their settings on your rig, comparing how settings run on a rig - it can have personal and community benefits in those ways.

No way, that's a cool ass thread. That's like those threads they have for ENB settings, but in this case, it's a rapid way while the game is new and we're getting troubleshooting bearings about us for a few people who enjoy testing things to try out people's settings and get a good idea how different settings work on their hardware, share their experiences, and then community gets better ideas. I can see spinoff threads written from the data that is gathered just having fun trying each others' settings.

Especially if any of those "hidden configs" in there seemingly not related to any sliders or ticks in the game have some cool effects.

Spider-Vice

It looks like it's just a filtering issue. Rockstar made it so things only rendered in higher quality a few meters from the player, the problem is they made it way too noticeable, this is a bug in RAGE's graphics code, and a pretty dumb one at that because they can increase the distance, or at least offer a setting for shadow LOD's.

It is a bug in RAGE because this is not the same RAGE we had in Max Payne 3 or GTA IV.

they should fix PCSS shadows... not releasing stupid guide

What's wrong with PCSS?

1. they are bugged

2. they look like a sh*t

look at this:

Normal shadow quality:

http://international.download.nvidia.com/geforce-com/international/images/grand-theft-auto-v/grand-theft-auto-v-pc-shadow-quality-001-normal.png

Very High shadow quality:

http://international.download.nvidia.com/geforce-com/international/images/grand-theft-auto-v/grand-theft-auto-v-pc-shadow-quality-001-very-high.png

there is a difference hm? very high looks sharper and better

BUT

if you set Nvidia PCSS

they again look like normal shadow quality (worse)

http://international.download.nvidia.com/geforce-com/international/comparisons/grand-theft-auto-v/grand-theft-auto-v-soft-shadows-interactive-comparison-2-nvidia-pcss-sharp.html

this is f*cking stupid

Nvidia pcss blurs the shadow depending how far is the shadow from the object itself. This is how a shadow "works" in real life too. When do you see a tree's leaf shadow full sharp on the ground in real life? A tree shadow in real life is just a blurry "spot" on the ground. So I don't get what is your problem with pcss.

It's the same on Console too. I noticed this on PS4 and was hoping it wouldn't be as tight to the character on PC.

Thing is, I didn't have this glitch until the patch. I would've noticed it right away at launch and the fact that other people are noticing it too means that R* has broken something. :/

I hope this is hotfixed tbh, I don't get how it can be an engine problem. If it was, then everyone would experience this glitch at launch.
