CptPff
I have this problem too, and after realising this problem, i found a similar problem in BF4 too. I think (or i hope) its a driver or windows bug (it cant be the game, since it happens in other games too)
Krysalis
It probably has something to do with the engine.
3rr0r
It is called LOD. Change you camera for the last one before first person view and you will have longer shadow draw distance. Yep lod, but as you can see even if the camera is set to the furthest possible from the character or the vehicle, it's still quite noticeable and it's annoying me very much... Killersnake
Its normal... It does it on PS3, Xbox 360, PS4, and Xbox One. Also its called Shadow Cascading. Image Example Edited April 21, 2015 by Killersnake

Image Example I played it on ps3 and honestly never noticed it, probably because the shadows on ps3 looked like horrible jaggies anyway. Either way, it shouldn't be this bad, if you look at all my 3 videos, the effect is so pronounced it's almost impossible not to notice and not get annoyed by it... PS3 is quite noticeable if due its small cascading radius wile PS4, Xbox One and PC haves a larger radius. It's not normal, not at all. My machine does not do it. My friend's machine does. Might be an Nvidia thing but I couldn't fix it on his machine. But the thing is it is even Digital Foundry brings it up also comparison what each shadow settings does that you can find in here. Otherwise its normal and cant get rid of it sadly atm unless someone mods it out or something... TJGM

It can't be normal if mine doesn't do it... normal for Nvidia maybe, normal for lower settings maybe, but definitely not normal for max settings with a video card that can handle it without going over VRAM limit. I seriously think it's because everybody is going over their VRAM limit... the settings don't change if you're over your VRAM limit even though it says they do. Here's a screenshot I took a few days ago, this is the one with the most shadows I could find, I'll try to take a different screenshot later but as you can see my shadows look fine and render high detail before I ever see them. I'll look for some more intensive shadows and take screenshots later. I noticed it on my friends PC when I was running alongside a fence, the shadow was horrible low detail except 2ft around the player was high detail. I'll try to find a fence later and upload my shadows. Edited April 21, 2015 by r0llinlacs

I even marked it for you on your own screenshot when you click here. Quite hard to noticed at first till you look into it and other shadows. I think raising the Texture or shader quality fixes it Its just how the shadows are in V.

blues3531
Every player has this, its not a bug nor something you can change with graphic settings. Its just the way the game is built/meant to be. Except its not in the console version is it....if it is I somehow never noticed it. In the pc version its based on a box around the character that has sharp lines. Not sure if it were that way on the consoles. I own ps3 and ps4 versions and have never seen it until playing pc. r0llinlacs
Just went and checked and mine is doing it too. BUT, I have a feeling this is because of the only option I left disabled - high resolution shadows. I'm going to check this out to confirm. SilverRST
R* always suck dick when they have to program the shadows. GTAIV with its MS Paint shadows and now this bullsh*t. It annoys the hell out of me, you are playing and yet these bugged shadows are staring you in wide screen monitor.
r0llinlacs
High resolution shadows did not fix it, but damn, they look so much better. I never noticed a difference before and it caused more lag, but when I enabled them this time, it didn't lag (maybe patch fixed lag from HRS?) and I noticed a huge difference. But still, there's a box that renders even higher resolution shadows around the player. Hmmmm. *EDIT* Just watched the OP's videos... mine only seems to affect ground and wall shadows, buildings and grass don't do it. Yeah the advanced graphic setting of high resolution shadows kind of helps the thing, but still it is quite noticeable...We need a skilful modder to fix this, or at least increase the distance of the bubble so it's not as noticeable. TheMostKnowledgable
I don't have this problem of the 15meter or so square around the player/vehicles anymore The artifact one, the shadows still draw in like that, but it's not noticable very much on 4x msaa and softer very high shadows and pcss for some reason. Don't know what setting caused it. Edited April 22, 2015 by TheMostKnowledgable
K20
I got the shadow problem as well 4770k 760 sli. And that shadow box. The box I only get after going to hospital for a while until I leave the hospital and also near micheals house. Down the road. Fades out automatically. No other issues. AUS_Twisted
It's a bug and I noticed it since launch as it happens after playing for awhile, for me I was toggling Post FX settings in graphics which was fixing the issue until it happened again later on. FilipCRO
Enough about the shadows. The same thing happens with grass (especially in the city) and I think its even worse after the latest patch. I have grass quality set to Very high, distance scaling slider to max and I have the same performance like in this video ----> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3_WbXbycLJ0 This is happening even with grass quality set to normal, high or ultra. Does anybody notices this as well ? Hope they will fix this, but someone should report this to Rockstar (submit a ticket) ! TheMostKnowledgable
btw, what shader quality are you using those who have the "10 meter square of detail" around them? NOT the shadow cascading abruptness, I'm talking about the vid with the truck in the grass there, the most recently quoted from OP. Disregard, for now. TheMostKnowledgable
Does it improve/happen further away if you set MSAA to 4x? I had that too, but I don't now, and I have fiddled a little to try and reproduce it and I can't now. Now system changes between then and now for me, so it's boggling. Gdog
happens on PS4 too. not sure what PS3/360 is like. definitely not a bug. it's just the way the engine is designed. might be to help lower end systems run better. i think you might be able to make it less noticeable but doubt it will be eliminated entirely. just something you need to deal with. TheMostKnowledgable
Yea, seriously. It is not happening to me now, at all. I had it for a brief time at one point after launch and haven't been able to cause it again.
