After the latest update 350Mb update (21 april 2015) I have this weird issue happening to me after the latest update where the shadows keep rendering only a few feet away from me, same goes for grass or objects in game, here is the video about the issue
tree shadows - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5e5vYZktl5k
building shadows - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vDwhjEWSEPU
grass, objects, shadows - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3_WbXbycLJ0
My PC configuration is as follows
cpu i5 3570k oc'ed to 4.6 GHZ
gtx 970 sli
16 gb DDR3 ram

When I played the game on day one I didn't notice anything like this...it's highly distracting and affects gameplay quite heavily too as the picture looks weird.

Weird, I had this issue before the patch and from what I've seen it looks fixed after the newest patch on my end.

Can you quite possibly make a quick vid about it please?

Scratch what I said, I tested it again and found the problem still persists. I had extended shadows on which helps the problem slightly, but it's still very noticeable, especially when walking in a certain direction. With extended shadows on, when you walk forward it seems they made the "box" around you longer in-front of you. However, when walking in the opposite direction the box is shortened.

Every player has this, its not a bug nor something you can change with graphic settings. Its just the way the game is built/meant to be.

This is weird, but I didn't notice anything strange when I first started the game back in 14 april...only now after the latest update I noticed this glaring problem with the shadows rendering...

And is it me or does the softest shadows option look significantly better than the nvidia PCSS setting where some shadows don't even render at all, like the shadows of the high voltage electric cables?

For example when I select nvidia PCSS shadows quality the high voltage electric cables render this weird transparent shadow that is almost invisible, same goes for wire fences where there is no shadow at all sometimes, but when I select the softest shadows there is significant difference, I can see very clearly the high voltage electric cables and the mesh texxture on the wire fence...

Something is seriously fudged up with the nvidia drivers or the GTA V PC port team did an awful job on this one :(

That's quite a shoddy piece of optimization work if you ask me? Mainly because it looks mighty awful and is extremely noticeable...I hate the grass rendering too, it renders quite close to your character too...I remember Crysis warhead had this similar issue where the objects, shadows and everything was rendering only a few meters before you....

It's less noticeable in first person mode. The more I play it the more I see they designed this game (the new gen and pc versions at least) using a lot of first-person fundamentals. They do a lot of things you'd expect in FP viewpoint, but that are given away in third person. I prefer third person though, so it is what it is I guess.

While soft/softer/softest shadows make the game LOOK better, I think the Nvidia PCSS setting is supposed to emulate shadows in reality. Meaning shadows might be blockier, and less solid looking at times. If you look at shadows in real life, they are quite similar. I still stick with the "softest" settings, which looks the best in my opinion.

I noticed that too, some shadows were rendered further when I entered the 1st person mode, but I still think it's a bad optimization decision on rockstar's part, mainly because shadows are the first thing you'll notice in a game like this, especially during the day on the various ledges, trees and so on...

I go out from time to time, when I have to buy groceries, so I know how the real world shadows look like :D Iam only joking man. But seriously the softer shadows look more detailed and they look significantly better than the nvidia PCSS setting where some shadows don't even render at all, like the shadows of the high voltage electric cables?

Yeah, the other shadow options are significantly better, just saying that's what the PCSS settings are going for is "realistic shadows". It might be pretty bugged, but hopefully we'll see some patches in the coming weeks. We've already had 2 patches within' a short amount of time, so I'm optimistic.

The artefact the op is referring to not a bug or isolated to his setup. I noticed this too - it's like there's some kind of high quality rendering bubble around the player that re-renders shadows as you approach. It's mainly noticeable in the bright sunlight when a lot of shadows are about - it really jarred me when I first noticed it, but it's not a bug...

I found the fix btw but you're not gonna like it - you need to have shadow quality on 'very high' in the options, and then enable 'high resolution shadows' in the advanced graphics options and it completely fixes the issue as it renders out hq shadows much further. But it's an absolute vram an gpu monster so it'll completely tank your setup if it hasn't got the grunt!

And I hate to say it as I know I'll probably get flamed...but I think options like this are a really good show from Rockstar. The game is ridiculously well optimised when you consider what it's doing and options like this make the game really scalable so that those with lesser hardware can still run the game at a playable rate.

Iam very hopeful too, it seem rockstar care more for the PC community now they've seen the sales and within two weeks we have two patches, Iam also awaiting an update to the ifruit up so I can train my chop. :D

Yep that's the right term I needed, it is some sort of weird ultra settings bubble, it is more noticeable when you zoom out the camera or hop in the bigger truck you can see the grass and objects and shadows rendering in the scene around the car as you move it...

I also tried the high resolution shadows, but even after I turned it on I didn't notice any significant difference, only the fps went from stable 60 to around 55 and lower

Having the same issue, and no,i noticed this before seeing this thread, where in a mission had to take trevor to climb over a wall, where his shadow on the wall was displayed the same way as in your second video.

The game is ridiculously well optimised

Guess that explains the huge amount of fps drops.

Yes. I have this same issue. If you change a graphical setting like vertical sync (one that makes the screen switch black for a second when you change it), then this annoying bug temporarily goes away. But the bug will reappear occasionally.

I found that this bug is only present in single player.

Now I'm encountering this issue. Had zero problems with the game but now the patches break it for me. I'm glad it's helping other people but at the same time, this is why I wish some patches were optional.

Mine's more to do with shaders but whatever. I can also see a few texture "seams" in some place, notably at the walk of fame area.

Blame RAGE for that stupid weird shadows. I have this problem too and guess what, I had it before the patches.

And I'm on i7-4770 and GTX780.

Next-gen consoles also have this I think. Something to do with how R* implemented the shadows and the anisotroping filtering.

A quick fix, change your vertical sync off and then back on again. It'll fix it right away. It eventually will happen again but it'll work for now.

This doesn't work at all Iam afraid...

Consoles had that too but it wasn't forming the square. The shape of the square depends on the angle of the sun light by the way.

I have this too. A solution for the square problem (not the shadow issue) is to change the graphics settings, then change them back. Another solution is to alt tab out, then alt tab back into the game. It will fix it temporarily.

same here, since day one and once you see it, you cannot unsee it ....

not mine but we are not alone, that's probably how the game is

also this issue i've seen once

Exactly, that one too, it occurs when you have the PCSS shadows enabled and it appears during the bright day... it's incredibly annoying and it seems that it's indicating the borders of how far the shadows are rendering, as one user mentioned in this thread, it's some sort of high quality bubble.

It is called LOD. Change you camera for the last one before first person view and you will have longer shadow draw distance.

Yes...Its really annoying.. Can you guys report it please?

I've reported too much sh*t for the week.. :/

It doesn't matter what the settings are... I've tried to fix it..on all settings..with long shadows..

Nothing works..

It looks like sh*t...shadows render a few feet away from me..Wherever i am..

Also its too blocky sometimes...

Please rwport this guys...

Thanks.

This happens on my friends machine... he has an FX8320 and a GTX660. I tried messing with all of the graphics settings and with the nvidia control panel and I couldn't fix it. It IS a problem, my PC shadows look great from all distances with a 290X. On his machine however... shadows are hard to look at. Also on his machine, there is no difference in shadows between high and ultra, every setting except normal looks the same.

I'm actually noticing I don't have this problem anymore. Not using advanced graphics shadows, don't know what the cause it, but it's not doing it for me. Try 4xAA just for a few frames and see if it changes it, I can't think of what it could be. I have very high shadows and I am using "Softer" as opposed to soft or softest. I do have some little squares shadow artifacts in the mid clip here and there though.

No. That would be some other issue unrelated to the optimisation of the game.
