Hugo_Agante
I made this thread because I am recently having black screen crashes on GTA V. It started on the Online (I think after the update, not sure though) and just now it happened the first time for single player. At first I thought it could be Online's fault since it still a bit buggy, but then, after having this crash on single player, I almost have no doubt it's due to my GPU. I am playing normally and then boom, the game freezes to black screen with sound still playing and then like a brrrrrrr until I reboot the PC. Yet, as I reboot my PC, my graphic settings are usually always above what my GPU could handle, I don't know why, because obviously I wouldn't put it above the memory it can handle. (It might be because on the retail Social Club-only version (the one I use), you got the normal mode and safe mode after GTA V not being quitted correctly the last time, and in the safe mode, the game makes these high settings (that I don't save) and therefore my game crashes due the GPU not having enough memory. I play with: 1280x720 resolution, with everything on high except the shadows and textures (the ones that require a huge amount of memory); DirectX11; AA and all those things off; population density to max and variety to min, etc. My specs are: AMD FX-6300 Six-Core Processor, Windows 8.1 Pro 64-bit, 8GB RAM, AMD Radeon HD 7790 1GB and I got the 15.4 beta drivers AMD released for GTA V. I just want a honest opinion of what might be a solution, whether that's putting different settings or having to buy a new GPU. EDIT: I forgot to mention I ran a benchmark test with those settings I mentioned and the game ran at an average of 37.5 fps and the memory used is like 985MB (more or less between 950 and 990) out of 1024MB in case that's useful to know Edited April 19, 2015 by Hugo_Agante

Hugo_Agante
I sent a request to Rockstar support.
sasuke78200
Got the same problem since the last update, with a GTX 780 this time. When I try to leave my apartment or when I switch to online my GPU crash, so black screen then sound going like "brrrr" and PC freeze. Submitted a ticket to R* with full dump of the crash, just hope they'll fix it. So bro' you're not alone with this problem. Hugo_Agante
Hugo_Agante
Yeah I guess I ain't, thankfully in the way that if there are more people with this freeze, R* will be prompted to solve this quickier. Me is not at specific parts of the game, it's totally random. I'm thinking of buying a new GPU with at least 2GB of memory but if they could solve this, it'd save me a lot of money. And where did you get the crash details?
sasuke78200
I got them on "system and information" on the configuration panel
Hugo_Agante
Oh the MSInfo! Yeah I sent that too, R* requires that among with DxDiag to be sent for PC version requests.
sasuke78200
I found a workaround for now, I just set my game to medium and it doesn't crash. But yeah, I can run the game on ultra so I have to wait until R* fix this.
Hugo_Agante
A new patch came out today, I hope they fixed it. Even on 800x600 resolution I had the black screen freeze, gosh.
funky61898
Even im getting black screen when i start game and it says OUT of Range . I have high end PC . and decent monitor of BenQ G2420HD .
CrazyLamer
Blackscreen crashes with weird sounds or a buzzing sound usually means a graphical crash, which is the gpu get's overworked and crash the system. As for out of range, depending on what type of connector you have from the gpu to the monitor makes a difference aswell. As an example i'll take my evga geforce gtx 690 which i had until recently, i used an hdmi 1.4 cable to my tv and monitor, and got some flickering, blackscreens and some other weird stuff happening. I looked everything up but never found a solution, fix or anything regarding it. And i started doing lots of tests with different hdmi cables and still not fixed it. And lastly i figured it out, my gpu only had hdmi 1.2 and as for the tv it only had hdmi 1.4 so the connection is very very unstable so i switched monitor to one with hdmi 1.2 and that worked flawless. So my guess in this case should to first lower the settings that requires the most vram but maybe doesn't change the game graphics too much. Alt.1 Start out with reinstalling the gpu drivers if you haven't already done so, and then switch all ingame graphics settings to lowest there is and see if the game works for a while without crashing. And if it doesn't crash, you know that it is one of the settings. Alt.2 Switch the game to 1280x720 or something similiar, direct x 10 or lower, and then lower the shadows to low, msaa/aa off, view range low and then try it, if you still get blackscreen/out of range try to switch the cable for the monitor. And then go from there to either put more settings to lower or higher depending on how the game works. Let me know if there is any progress and i'll try to help you more. I also have an teamspeak server for live chat, makes things like this much easier. Hugo_Agante

I also have an teamspeak server for live chat, makes things like this much easier. Yeah, I had suspicious it could only be graphic-related issues as there was no error message whatsoever, just really a black screen with sound playing until I pressed a key and then "brrrrrrr" and rebooting the PC. Although, as sasuke says, it can also be a problem of the game itself as in the first 2-3 days (until the first patch basically) I had no problems at all, at least on single player mode. I reinstalled the AMD 15.4 drivers and yes, I do have the settings to lowest possible, I optimized the game for "Performance" using AMD Gaming Evolved. I also use the 14.502.1014.0 AMD Radeon HD 7700 Series driver from 31st March 2015, should I also reinstall this one? Here are my settings using that tool: Ambient Conclusion: Off Anisotropic Filtering: Off DirectX Version: DirectX 10 Distance Scaling: 0% Extended Distance Scaling: 0% Extended Shadows Distance: 0% FXAA: Off Grass Quality: Normal High Detail Streaming While Flying: Off High Resolution Shadows: Off Long Shadows: Off MSAA: Off NVIDIA TXAA: Off Particles Quality: Normal Population Density: 0% Population Variety: 0% Reflection MSAA: Off Reflection Quality: Normal Resolution: 1280 x 720 Shader Quality: Normal Shadow Quality: Normal Soft Shadows: Sharp Tessellation: Off Texture Quality: Normal Water Quality: Normal sasuke78200

CrazyLamer
Sure, some people have had problems since release and some had some new or a problem after the patch. And since all other games are working it something inside the game, BUT it can also be your computer not handling this specific game, im not saying it is but it is a possibility. Since it's not a top-notch gpu card you are using and it only has 1gb of vram it's too little for GTA 5 imo since even if you go after the minimum specs you'd still pretty much will overwork the gpu with only 1gb. A friend of mine have an geforce gtx 460 and even him is still stuck on low fps with low on everything and the resolution on 1280x720 with an amd six-core cpu and 8gb of ram. If you have steam please add me CrazyLamer the pic of me standing against a wall inside with a white tank-top, and i'll try to help you with all the settings when im at home from work in 3-4 hours. I have an teamspeak server so i hope you have that program since it will be much easier to talk over the mic. I've been working a lot with support especially with games and software so if anyone has any problems send me a pm or something and i can link you to my teamspeak server and make a support room for GTA 5. Im not saying i will be able to fix it, only maybe but atleast i think it's worth a shot until they maybe patch away the weird problems they have atm. And no you can't run the game on ultra, i have an gtx 980, intel i7 quad-core cpu and 32gb ram and have the game installed on an ssd drive and even i can't run everything on max with a good stable fps. But sure i can run it on ultra too but everything below 60fps is bad with stuttering. Edited April 23, 2015 by CrazyLamer

Im not saying i will be able to fix it, only maybe but atleast i think it's worth a shot until they maybe patch away the weird problems they have atm. Yeah, that is true. That's why I'm not sure I wouldn't have had freezes before the patch since I only got 1/2 days to play before they released the first patch. And despite not having played any other games after getting GTA V, I used to play FIFA 15 (also a recent game with lower requirements of course) and have had no problems at all. So yeah, it can be computer related but then I got a reply to the request I sent to Rockstar: ZendeskYesterday at 23:25 Hi Hugo_Agante, You recently submitted a ticket regarding Grand Theft Auto V for PC. Thank you for your patience, Rockstar Support They suggest that this is/was an in-game issue and that has been patched, and yesterday, I was playing and had no problems at all. I used the settings I previously posted here which were made by AMD Gaming Evolved set to "Performance". And it could be also something related to AMD Gaming Evolved itself as in this video « » the author (Trevonn David) replies to me (13NFSMW) and advised me to close AMD Gaming Evolved before playing and yesterday I noticed an increased performance after shutting AMD GE down. Note that the GPU on the video is the 2GB version and not the 1GB but when I saw the video the title was just GTA V Benchmark - AMD HD 7790 so I thought it was the same as mine. But no one guarantees me that it has been fixed. Sure everything was fine yesterday but I wonder if it will be today, tomorrow, etc. The only way to find out is to play xD I really hope this was in-game issue and that it has been patched since I am only using 900MB of VRAM out of 1024MB. CrazyLamer
Ah, i see. Well as long as it works it's good, and yeah they don't always make tests for all graphic card so for some it may cause problems. Hope to see you ingame

Hope to see you ingame Yeah haha All I can do now is keep playing and hoping it doesn't happen anymore. Really hope AMD GE (both it's optimization of the graphic settings and closing it before running the game) and Rockstar patch solved it lol By the way, add me on Social Club: Hugo_Agante Maybe we can play in the Online sometime! Hugo_Agante
Yeah I noticed Already added you too! Oh and do you know if the custom license plates are for the online character only or also for F, M and T (the same plate for all of them, which sucks)? I wanted to make a plate but only for my online character or if possible, add a specific plate for a specific SP (and online) character or car, I doubt that's possible though Edited April 23, 2015 by Hugo_Agante
CrazyLamer
The custom plates, you can make one for free and as far as i know they are for online only. And you need to choose which system it's on, in this case Social Club. I think it's account bound so when you order the first one for free you choose text and color, and some colors costs up to $600 and a new one with another text costs $100 000. So yeah, you can make different plates for different cars but it will cost you in Online, but making the same plate with different colors, which i have for now until i get more money. sasuke78200
Hey, I found out why my GPU was crashing by searching through the dump files. It was the Nvidia Streamer Service, so if one of you has the same problem, just disable it
