I spent years working in network security and my favorite password tip I learned was using a full sentence or phrase as your password. Toss in some numbers and maybe a special character to throw off any brute force dictionary hackers.

The level of understanding of computer security on display here makes me cry a little tear.

It made me laugh personally... Because alot of the people who posted on this topic are the "PC Master Race" elitists who go around berating so called "Console Peasants"

Pic Related... Dreamcast Master Race

So brute force attacks are out of the question, as it will lock the account after so many attempts. That is a really nice information to have.

Damn, nothing is safe anymore. Though, why do I have a feeling that this is all a hoax?

It wasn't a hoax. The original list was up on pastebin. Overclockers misguidedly printed where the list originated and it was quite easy to find. I wanted to see if my username ended up on it (thankfully no). By the time I saw it, the list had grown to over 1000. It has since been taken down but I'm sure it's been posted/shared elsewhere. What was shocking (but not really) was the number of passwords that were just plain dangerous.

Password123

PaSsWoRd1

qwerty1234

etc...

It probably goes without saying but a strong password will go a long way. Using a password generator site like https://identitysafe.norton.com/password-generator/can help you create a strong password,

How is qwerty1234 dangerous? Brute force is out since timeouts. If it is properly encrypted picking up on the data is pointless as a randomly generated string would be generated for each user, making guess work next to impossible. With old encryption tech it would be dangerous, but unless you are good at guessing, overly complex passwords are becoming close to obsolete.

Ah come on I just got used to Doombiker4Everafter!

Good thing every other password/account out there has nothing to do with Doom altogether. Good luck digging through my memories you dickbags. :p

Update 4/23/2015

Rockstar has finally acknowledged the glitch in secuirty

We are aware that unauthorized attempts have been made to access Rockstar Games Social Club accounts using email and password combinations sourced from unaffiliated, compromised websites or databases elsewhere on the internet. For the accounts affected, we are in the process of reverting those accounts back to their original owners. As a result, the ability to change email addresses for Social Club accounts has been temporarily disabled. See the following Rockstar Support article for more information here. As a reminder, it is a good policy to ensure that the Rockstar Games Social Club account username and password is not shared across multiple websites on the internet. For accounts affected with this issue, we are working to respond to customers to reinstate full user access within 24 hours of contacting Customer Support. Please continue to look to the Rockstar Support website for more information as it develops.

Lol, russians are selling those accounts for 2.81$

Edit: nearly 23,000 accounts have already been sold (in total). That's a pretty damn massive hack!

You can brute force, just not as quickly. It will take an hour to do the most common passwords tops. The only thing the time limit does is protect people with more secure passwords.

How to Create a Password so Secure it Would Take the NSA 27 Million Years to Hack

http://www.lifehacker.co.uk/2015/03/30/create-password-secure-take-nsa-27-million-years-hack

People are still going to use Password1234, Qwerty123 and ect as their passwords even if they were targerted.

People either just don't care or are extremely ignorant to internet security

weird, for some reason i cant remember my Social club password but i can log in through xbox, the thing is my xbox acc's pw and id are different then my social club info, so if someone hacked into my social club and has no clue what my microsoft info is, thats means im safe right? cause now im kinda worried at the fact that the pw i usually use for my social club account isn't working.

assuming to be on that list of about 200 out of millions of players is like hoping to make a big win in the lottery.

as i don't play lottery and my sc account has not been hacked yet, i will take the very little risk of getting hacked on a game and not change anything.

and as there is probably only a very small amount of players of this forum affected by this (maybe even none), i don't really see the necessity of this being a pinned thread.

it's ok and also nice if someone warns about this in an extra thread, but pinned, really??

only a very tiny part of the whole player base of gtao is on this forum.

must be really really "lucky" if someone here is on that list!

You don't really know much about computer/internet security do you?

That number has gone from 200 to tens of thousands

BoJack Cognac

I went into a lobby last week and 2 people were saying things like "Yeah, I got 3 accounts. Gonna change the passwords tomorrow" and I left immediately.

Then I got a message asking me if I wanted to sell my account.

I changed my Playstation Network password with a quickness.

just lol

I fail to see what's funny about people having their accounts stolen and locked out of a game they spent their hard earned money on...

Care to explain what's so funny?

The last list was posted on Pasterbin but it has since been removed but it's been posted on other sites but it hasn't been revealed on what ites.
