Has R* Given Up on Freeroam?

Rockstar gave up on Free-roam when they did not design in lobby options like friendly fire, no cops, PvE, and of course an extra special hardcore mode for the badasses who constantly remind us that free-roam is only for killing other players.

No. You are talking about a different game. In this game we all play with the same rules. There are no custom sessions. This is the world they want you to live in. It was done on purpose.

You are a criminal. Do not expect hand holding. Anything bad that happens to you you deserved. Especially cops and other crooks murdering you. That threat should be constant in your mind.

You know they actually intended for free roam to be a much more social experience given the design of it as well especially if you consider how they originally intended heists to be though. They didn't intend for it to be some glorified deathmatch where everyone is at each others' necks every second of free roam.

That's like your opinion, man.

Their actions in not changing it at all speaks truth.

Make friends, play with friends, or die lonely and frustrated. This is GTA Online. You can play all by yourself if u want to but all the Freeroam goodies WILL NOT proc w/o a lobby of PLAYERS! PLURAL.

Get all the pony tails, tattoos and high heels you want in Invite Only. If you want that Special Crate you gotta fight me to the death for it and possibly until one of us quits if I don't get it.

Freeroam is good.

It's not opinion. It's fact how they intended it to be. They've changed the way heists worked, they changed the hospital bills, they changed quite a bit of the game because people obviously treated free mode differently than they initially intended or envisioned.

If there is nothing else to indicate the difference in vision for free mode, look at the fact that heists were initially going to involve the heist leader taking all the money and splitting it among all participants in the end....or they could steal it all and their crew could hunt them down to recover it. This is what heists were described as when online was in its infancy or even prior to its release.

Look at these elements and you can tell that the developers intended it to be a more social and friendly environment. You can argue about how things "encourage" you to kill others and all that, but none of these things to my knowledge are specifically in free mode. You can get player kills and headshots and everything else from deathmatches and captures. They obviously changed some elements to compensate for the difference between expected behaviors and actual behaviors in players.

All I'm hearing is that their original intention for the game is the same, only their devices to discourage harassment were unanimously panned by the players and nerfed or removed. The social aspects you refer to are all complete and intact except for "Give Cash" which was canned by them because they wanted to encourage Shark Card purchases during the early part of its release. The game is very social if you have friends to socialize with or if you want to make friends in game.

Bounties can only be completed in Free Mode sessions. They require you to kill another player. Merryweather Mercs and Lamar muggers can only be sent against other players in Free Mode. Daily Objectives now have various kill other players objectives. Armored cars, Simeon Vehicles, and Crates are frequently the beginnings of dust ups between players.

Explain the history of Tanks in GTAO to me. What does that say about Rockstar's ignoring free mode?

There is one point though, if you read the Terms of Service, there is a code of conduct clause that states you are not permitted to do anything to prevent other players from enjoying the game. And since free mode has no specific purpose, and since various stores and activities are open and available, then if a player wants to use those things, that is their right, and if anyone tries to prevent them, they would be in violation of the ToS.

The wording of the End User License Agreement is

You agree not to:

restrict or inhibit any other user from using and enjoying any online features of the Software;

The Terms of Service clarify with:

(2) you will not restrict or inhibit any other user from using and enjoying the Online Services (for example, by means of harassment, hacking or defacement)

So without any further clarification it is left vague as to what constitutes harassment in a game where there are multiple awards and rewards for killing other players and daily objectives which encourage the same.

As with most things in life, it's usually the opinion of the injured party that matters most. There is nothing wrong with battling and killing other players in free mode, assuming they willingly want to participate. The question of consent is the biggest factor there. I'm just pointing out the Code of Conduct clause of the ToS to argue against the notion that players can do whatever they want and anyone who has a problem with it "can gtfo". There are rules and some of the behavior that ruins free mode for so many players is most definitely harassment. If it wasn't genuine harassment, you wouldn't hear so many salty players bitching and moaning about how much they hate the GTA community, griefers, trolls, etc.

Rock star allows you easy methods to report harassment or any other ToS/EULA violations.

The questions is "Has R* given up on Freeroam?". Obviously, the answer is No. They are making adjustments and adding content for it in each update.

If the question was, "Is R* ignoring user requests to make Freeroam less of a chaotic free for all full of cheaters, griefers and trolls?". The answer would be Yes.
