Has R* Given Up on Freeroam?

Public freeroam is still a messy griefing free-for-all. Passive mode is still mostly useless (entirely useless in vehicles, around which the *entire* game is based), now players have homing launchers and Hydras so I'm getting blown up both in the air and on the ground constantly...

I don't have that many friends on XBox Live and even fewer of them still have GTA V. Most have moved on to other titles (and I don't blame them), making public my last and only option at this point. Putting aside discussion of heists, are we ever going to see an improvement to the public freeroam meta or is it safe to assume that it will be as much of an unplayable mess as it was at launch?

Which would be great if I could play freeroam without getting griefed every step of the way.

Passive.

Read the post.

Yeah, but if it's going to happen at all, it'll probably only be for PC. I play on the 360.

OP, when you put yourself in a freemode session that is full of people you don't know then expect to die a lot. That's how they are playing. You are going to have to play just as they are to win. If you don't want to play that way then do invite-only sessions.

Make a post in the "Find a Meetup and Lobby's" section of this forum and you'll probably find people like you with ease that aren't going to make it their mission to kill everything in sight.

There's your problem... kind of.

Is FR a bit static? Yes. Can it get boring? Of course. Do griefers make the game frustrating? Absolutely. FR is an unrestricted, unstructured free-for-all. That's just the way it is.

Really, man. It's GTA. It is what it is. Even with no god mode glitchers and modders and whatnot you would still be faced with people who will want to kill you on site just because you are there.

I used to hate public sessions and go Invite Only all the time. But I forced myself to just do pubs for a while and guess what? I met friends, I earned money, and I learned how to avoid trouble when I didn't want to be in that mess. You can always switch sessions and this increases your chances of popping session randoms like Armored Trucks, Lester Targets, Simeon Grabs, etc.

Almost every update has added to Freeroam. The most recent added lots.

They know what they are doing.

EDIT: I GO CRAZY FOR SPECIAL CRATES!

I thought this was about the god mode glitches lasting so long.

CrysisAverted

Has R* given up on freeroam?

Judging by 2 years of f*cking wall breaches and the fact that I still have negative Stunt Jumps I think they never really gave a damn to begin with

nah i dont think rockstar have given up. They might be a little delay on any big updates for consols until they have the pc version running properly.

For GTAO2 I would like it if they went back to basics. No purchasable military grade vehicles, no bullet proof helmets (still don't know what they were thinking with that one) and a smaller but more fleshed out set of weapons. The crazy weapons were cool in tbogt because they suited the over the top theme of the game that at the time made for a nice change from GTAIV. But in GTAO the novelty has worn off for me, with stickybombs being the weapon I grew most tired of while I still played.

I think the exact point that I realised stickybombs somewhat hurt the game was while I was trying to make my bounty more interesting by attempting to fight off players while on a moving tram. The first person that approached me didn't even bother to shoot, he threw a stickybomb and that was the end of that very short experiment. Too many of the weapons are way too easy to kill with which not only encourages griefing but also cuts short combat scenarios that would work out much better with weaker weapons, for example a game mode like top fun which should be fun on paper becomes ridiculously one sided once you realise that Lazers have rapid explosive rounds that you can aim in the general direction of the runner to easily get the kill. It's not like the annihilator in GTAIV which was used in similar but vastly superior game mode called chopper vs chopper where you had to take your hat off to a pilot that could consistently get kills, any idiot that can fly well enough to avoid crashing into buildings can get kills with a Lazer.

I'm sure not many people will agree but if they took GTAO.2 back to street level I think it would make for a more fun and probably more balanced experience.

Sounds like you're on last gen. Passive still has problems, but it's not useless in vehicles or anything.

OP says R* has given up on Free Roam and then says its exactly the same as launch!

So, maybe it is, and has always been, just what R* wants it to be!

This is my analysis of the game having played it since launch. This thread comes up often so here is my opinion on freemode and hopefully some helpful insight on having a better time online.

I once hated free roam but the more I played the more obvious its purpose become. Its not broken or lacking or anything. Its exactly as it should be but the problem is people don't understand how to play the game... Or people refuse to accept that others play this game different than them.

There are daily objectives where you need to mug a player and 1v1 dm a player. Both are aggressive. Free roam wasn't designed for randoms to be buddy buddy with each other. If you do the tutorial you are literally a rising criminal. So every white, pink, red dot next to you is a potential threat. Free roam is open world PvP.

If you're in a public session your saying you're prepared to face off against jets, tanks and griefers in general. When I said people don't know how to play the game im being literal, they don't, because I think people were expecting more instructions besides the tutorial. As a result players had to learn to get good of their own free will or get destroyed by tanks and other skilled players. This is why people still don't know how to combat roll, eat snacks between combat, use cover and the landscape to get an advantage, etc... If I die I screwed up because its true. If you're getting shot down by a homing rocket then you drove/flew by a dot. Why would you do that if you didn't want to be engaged? Why take the risk when there is a 50/50 chance they'll shoot you? Why is it bad if you do get shot? Engage your killer and test your skill.

Griefers use to piss me off but it occurred to me they were playing the game exactly how it was designed. Why have tanks if they're not to be used? Sniper rifles, assault rifles, sticky bombs.... Play missions/LTS/DM/TDM/Survivals etc to learn the mechanics of the game, learn how to cover yourself, learn when to shoot and take pot shots and how to survive. This is also where you make some friends. If you have some good runs send out some friend requests. Freeroam is where you go to test you're abilities against other players with no boundaries, no training wheels, no help. Just your skill, wit and a handful of in game abilities provided by your contacts.

The freeroam activities are there not to give you money... The money/RP is a bonus and why you hardly make any to begin with. They're there to target you or draw players across the map together... So they can shoot each other with the weapons they've unlocked. High priority vehicle = target, Gang attack = target, bounty = target, crate drop = target. You even unlock weapon tints for killing players! The game is literally telling you to kill each other!

Freemode = PvP

Invite only = PvE

So play the games various and plentiful jobs to make some friends. Send out friends requests, join some crews if you don't want to expose yourself to the dangers of freemode.

TL;DR Missions/Survivals/DM-TDM-LTS/ect.. are game modes to teach you the basics of the game, how to survive and make some friends. Free roam is where you test what you've learned against other players with no boundaries, help or training wheels. Its designed to be PvP. You are literally a rising criminal at the start of the game so logically everyone else is too. This means everyone is a potential threat. Play the games various jobs to make some friends if you don't want to go into free mode alone or if you want to avoid free roam all together. Free roam is exactly as it was intended.

I don't know with y'all, but I think freeroam is as good as it can be.

Personally, I don't see anything wrong with it.

op sounds like last Gen problems

Never researched tbh, but I wonder why "full-passive" is current gen only. Can't be cause of technical reasons, can it?

CarimboHanky

like i always say... the word is freeroam, the keyword is FREEroam

its an open game, where people do whatever they want.

some choose to do car meets, some choose to go sailin or off roading, well there are some of us that choose to kill people, spawnkill, grief.

its what we do, its what we like.

im a fulltime freeroamer and the chaos that surround the sessions dont stop me from doing my daily objectives or do some of the newly added freeroam activities like cops distraction and stuff like that.

if you have so many issues with griefers in freeroam, you have multiple options the one that seem to fit you is Invite Only session.

Elder Maxson

I just avoid other players when I'm in a public lobby. While others are butchering each other in Los Santos, I'm just gonna sit back and enjoy the scenery in the middle of Blaine County.
