Just curious to see where the community stands when it comes to player vs player in GTA Online. Can it be considered a legitimately competitive game or is it more geared towards casual play?

Also wanted to see what people think about the slower, more realistic controls and physics of GTA and how people felt that it affected PvP, whether it detracts from it, adds more depth, or it just simply provides a different PvP experience from most twitch shooters, etc..

Casual cos auto aim

I would say casual since it's hard to be serious and competitive when matchmaking doesn't want me to be.

Between the blatantly overpowered weapons, clunky controls and "automatic" crap, it's obviously geared towards casuals. Although, it's fun to play under certain restrictions.

I really wish the deathmatches were set up like Max Payne 3 with the loadouts. Having preset loadouts limited by what each item weighed instead of either being forced to use the default weapons or having everything in your arsenal gave the game a bit of strategy to it. Also, I wish the controls were as tight as Max Payne 3 too. The controls for GTAV aren't terrible but there is just something off compared to MP3.

I honestly don't why these things changed so much from MP3 to GTAV unless GTAV was being developed long before the tweaks made in MP3, I dunno. MP3 was totally underrated. Those of us who know how great it was know though.

Did they ever remove that horrible overlay effect you get when you go on killstreaks in Deathmatches? That alone prevented me from ever touching those gametypes again.

I personally believe the firstperson shooting (freeaim) is incredibly clunky. In games like Destiny and Call of Duty (before Ghosts) I could aim reasonably well. No MLG player by any means, but I could do reasonably well if I concentrated and was warmed up first but in GTA I can't aim without the assisted part. My hat's off to anyone who can.

Its even worse in first person, the red dot scopes have added visual recoil that makes it look like the barrel moves wildly while in reality it does not :/

Even though I do reasonably well in pvp modes, GTA is not the game I look for doing competitive things. Teamplay is much more fun.

auto-aim + long ranged spray&pray weapon does not = competitive

1. casual, even though most players it seems treat it like it is actually important.

2. freeroam, because i spend most of my time there.

3. detracts a bit, the controls/actions are ok for the most part, but they do lack in some general areas (ducking on foot, going prone, can not turn phone off, etc..) the phone is one of the biggest problems imo. those who know would agree trying to run for cover or the like, only to hear that phone ring making you instantly walk because you answer the damn thing because you're tapping the run button when one of the game characters calls you.

The creator ruined PvP for me - can hardly find a DM that isn't some @sshole's custom meat-grinder.

Besides that, the disparity between ranks is too massive - a rank 8 is dogmeat to a rank 120+ - even with forced weapons the difference in health still gives a huge advantage.

Don't tell me the auto shotgun, minigun and all the explosive weapons aren't absurdly powerful.

The PvP action is terrible in this game.

It's only considered PvP for those who care for precious K/D ratios.

I don't do DMs anymore since I only get put in deathtraps. Mainly play Free Roam when not in Heists, and Capture as it's fun.

Uh that's the point of these weapons in real life. Watch some videos and you'll see. Overpowered is just another word for "I don't agree". The truth of the matter is, none of the weapons in gtao are "overpowered", that's a cod word. Edited by Chloroform

Really? Never knew you could fit 9999 AA-12 rounds in real life.. and 20 rockets, 25 frag grenades, 25 stickies, 5 mines and 20 grenade launcher rounds. I also never knew miniguns could have 0 recoil and fire 10,000 rounds all at once without overheating.

Funny you say op is a COD word when COD has better gun balance than this game.

Smooth Longsack

The controls are fine for battle but strategy is the key to most victories. The hydra and valkytie are great strategies...

How is holding x amount of ammo "overpowered". Seems to me you just want to complain about pointless sh*t. Nothing you just listed is "overpowered" towards a guns performance. Sure no recoil can be argued but the mini gun isn't meant to be 100% realistic. It doesn't have a belt and also no one walks around with a minigun in real life.

COD is a balanced game? Haha, that's a joke. All guns basically perform the same after all the patches and bitching. Yeah that screams balance.

Rolling around like a greased ferret is no way to approach PvP.

And I should know.

GTA is not balanced. Not every weapon exists to satisfy a niche in its class. Instead, the lower level weapons are inferior to the upper level ones in almost every statistical category, have you tried comparing the Assault Rifle to the Advanced? Yeah.

In COD each weapon exists for a reason. SMG A for accuracy, SMG B for damage, SMG C for rate of fire, etc. etc.

No idea what you mean by movement and controls. Controls feel fine generally...movement/control sucks because of the "realistic" walking it has. Where holding down on the analog can and will sometimes result in your character walking FORWARD first before walking in a circle rather than spinning, even if you aren't already moving.

The pvp is obviously nothing competitive though, it's just for casual fun and when you treat it as such it's most enjoyable.

CarimboHanky

this game would be more competitive if the match making was better...

before gtao launched i belived the system would match you with people within your same level and stuff, but thats not the case.

we have a Pro-Bullying system that put high level players and low levels in the same field.

R* tried to make it competitive by adding stats like the praised K/D Ratio but this loss it "value" when they allowed this stat to be boosted by freeroam kills.

other thing is the stupid flashing screens in DMs, i used to be a avid dm player in IV but gtao have that stupid screens that simply keep me away from them.

hahaha let me guess, you still strugglin against the marksman rifle hahaha

I care about this much for PvP in general and open-lobby PvP especially.

:bored::bored:

However thats just myself I'm speaking for.

Im just not that type of player-style that PvP caters to if im being honest only time I do kill others is if it's my friends and we're just mucking around killing each other or if people try to hunt me down for my bounty, I just dont find much satisfaction in killing some random dude unless he's annoying the crap out of me by picking me of all people whilst I'm in passive and clearly wants a battle, Now that I do but most times it will only last like 1-2 deaths and I move on to something better. Usually its missions or just free-roaming for myself, I find jobs and roaming the city spends 90% of my time up I actually find it quite relaxing seeing what other players are up to and what cars they have.

I cant knock PvP players either I completely understand why they would find that playing-style attractive that's because it gives the player freedom to kill just about anybody they like on the map and I guess to a degree competition is a factor even if its just casual competition maybe even if its moral victories, some people just find killing other users fun that's just how it is. Personally I think the balance is about as good as it can be and I can't complain I feel like if R* was to cater too much to one side and changes the game-play aspect it could ruin the games dynamic, they did their best to seperate different game-styles but still retain the values of an open-world online game. Passive is just fine the way it's, players can't abuse the passive mode feature, people can just mind their own business without having stress put on them and it gives friendly and new players the opportunity to meet potential friends/allies through interaction without having some rambo going on a rampage every 5 seconds so you can experience the open-world at your 'OWN' pace, I would like to add just a small suggestion right here but something like an auto-passive for when you join in lobbys could be handy, I would get spawned in thinking I'm still in passive only to get blown up by an RPG 3 seconds later and being spawned walking distance away much like that to COD spawns, yes I understand it spawns people in last location which I have mine set to but its almost impossible to get into passive before they kill you, I dont get mad or anything and its not like I can't kill them usualy I'm just not in the mood but its just kinda annoying how passive will wanna stay on for one lobby to only be reset back to normal in the next one. Same for PvP players it works for them in the fact of PvP players having higher mental states so they can find potential battles easier, they pay the price for blowing up some dudes car whilst he is in passive and letting them have some fun of their own in their own space with others.

I'm happy that this game didn't just become a shoot everybody up online style because that's all it would be known for and core values matching different player-styles up in one lobby would go out the door, the game would be so linear and get boring quick if this was the case.

Casual. C'mon. Controllers and 30FPS? No more than a casual can come out of that. Ok we have PC. keyboard/mouse 60+FPS. Still nope. Take a minigun and you are a walking player lawnmower.

I voted for GTA's controls and movement "severely hurting PVP". I will definitely get a lot of hate for it, but I find it difficult moving around on foot particularly. Even if you just gently push the stick a tiny bit, your character will take a massive step forward (especially in first person). That, and there's no happy medium between free-aim and auto-aim. Free-aim is way too hard with a game controller, and auto-aim is way too easy.

Only my two complaints really, but it's bearable enough, I guess. Can't wait for the criticism to roll in.

Hate for what? I'm a free aim player and I agree with you. The movement and aiming in this game are clunky and obtrusive as hell.
