GTA V shuts down my computer [Help]

Hey there.

I first started playing GTA V this morning. The game has been running smoothly on lower setting and I had no problems with it except an occasional FPS drop. I first started exploring the world - I played for about 2 hours and everything was fine. I then started playing the storyline missions.

When I reached the mission where Frankling must enter Michael's house though, after I stole the car, my computer just shut down a minute later. Then on the same mission, the computer shut down again. I turned autosave on and quickly passed the mission by skipping the cutscenes. The problem was not in this mission though, but in ALL storyline missions after that. At one side mission, bandits were robbing the barber's shop and I played as Michael. You had to chase them down and retreive the stolen money. After I did that, in the cutscene where Michel returns the money, my computer shut down again.

After I play a while the missions, my computer would just shut off after about 5-10 minutes. It happens with almost every mission after Franklin got into Michael's house. It happens during missions, during cutscenes, etc. It keeps shutting off when I play for a while ANY mission! It once shut off after I tried to simply load a game!

Right now it's impossible to play for even 10 minutes without the computer shutting down by itself (it shut down over 10 times already). I guess that my computer overheats. I've never had similar problems with any game before (the most recently released game I played other than GTA V was Watch Dogs) :(

(strangely enough I can't play GTA IV properly even with lowest settings, but GTA V runs PERFECTLY, except for the shut downs)

I googled this and I saw that other people had similar problems, but no solution as of yet. Has anyone had a similar problem with the computer shutting down? How do you fix it?

I detect a faulty ram here. Run a memtest overnight and come back with the result. Either this or your CPU/GPU is overheating like f*ck.

Overheating and failsafes kicking in or faulty power supply. Technically it should throttle down for CPU or GPU and blue screen for RAM or faulty memory modules from GPU, but that`s only standard.

Before you do anything, get Hwmonitor and Prime95 and / or memtest written down. Get a friend that is a good enough friend to come with his PSU (ideally roughly the same Wattage as yours) and run with his for a bit, to see if it shuts down, to exclude the PSU (believe it or not, it WILL NOT shut down your PC with load tests, but it WILL ingame - happened to me a few moons ago with a brand new PSU, no less). Alternatively, see if you have some PC shop around you that has a service unit and rent a PSU from there or whatever.

Thanks a lot, guys :)

It has definitely something to do with overheating. I tried reducing my settings to the lowest, and for a moment it worked. I played freeroam for about an hour, and eventually my PC shut down again. It was really hot. Sadly, I deleted the game. I guess I'm gonna have to wait a few more years until I get a new computer (circa 2017-2019) :(

I have already watched the storyline of GTA V twice as a movie - a 12-hour-long clip that I downloaded from YouTube. It's all good. I still have San Andreas to fool around :)

Cheers.

Well, do you know what is overheating? It might just be a matter of reseating the CPU with some fresh AS5. Stuff shouldn't just start overheating for no reason.

I really have no idea why this is happening. I've had similar problems with GTA IV as well, only I haven't played it long enough to actually shut down this computer. I used to play GTA IV on my old PC withot any problems on the lowest setting, but the new one, which is a few times more powerful, starts heating up almost instantly, so I just don't play GTA IV. I can hear the vents spinning and it starts smelling like burnt plastic all over the PC.

In comparrison to GTA IV, GTA V runs perfectly on this computer, but it shuts it down after a while. I've never had such problems with anything before. I guess my computer just isn't good enough :(

(sorry, I'm not that good with computers)

It means your cpu is overheating. If you are using the AMD graphics that are build into the CPU then that's your problem. Either you need to get an external card or a better cooling system.

I had this issue at launch. It was my cpu overheating. To remedy i took the heat sink off the cpu and removed the heat sink fan. There was a layer of dust in between the fan and heat sink. cleaned it off put it all back together and haven't gone over 43c since.

game runs smooth as ever
