Help building a PC to run GTA V on ultra settings at 60 FPS

Hey guys,

I looked around and couldn't find a thread where you request input, so I was hoping I can get some suggestions here.

I'm selling my PS4 to help me transition to PC master race. Here's a similar post I put up on Reddit to show what I'm looking for:

What will you be doing with this PC? Be as specific as possible, and include specific games or programs you will be using.

  • I'm looking to build a PC for $1200 or less after taxes. I would like to run Grand Theft Auto V on ultra settings at 60 FPS and include some beef in there so it can support any mods (like a new Icenhancer if it gets released). I also do some rendering on the side in 3D Max (for work), so anything that can support that as well is ideal.

What is your maximum budget before rebates/shipping/taxes?

  • $1200, although I prefer cheaper.

When do you plan on building/buying the PC? Note: beyond a week or two from today means any build you receive will be out of date when you want to buy.

  • In the next couple of days.

What, exactly, do you need included in the budget? (Tower/OS/monitor/keyboard/mouse/etc)

  • Everything except peripherals. (IE no keyboard, mouse, monitor or speakers necessary.

Which country (and state/province) will you be purchasing the parts in? If you're in US, do you have access to a Microcenter location?

  • I live in California, but I'd be happy buying online.

If reusing any parts (including monitor(s)/keyboard/mouse/etc), what parts will you be reusing? Brands and models are appreciated.

  • No parts reused.

Will you be overclocking? If yes, are you interested in overclocking right away, or down the line? CPU and/or GPU?

  • Seeing as I don't know squat about PCs, I don't plan on doing any over clocking.

Are there any specific features or items you want/need in the build? (ex: SSD, large amount of storage or a RAID setup, CUDA or OpenCL support, etc)

  • I'd prefer to have more RAM to support rendering, so 2x8GB RAM is ideal (16GB total) for now. I hope I can upgrade this to 32gb down the line.

Do you have any specific case preferences (Size like ITX/microATX/mid-tower/full-tower, styles, colors, window or not, LED lighting, etc), or a particular color theme preference for the components?

  • The smaller the machine, the better, but beggars can't be choosers.

Do you need a copy of Windows 7 or 8.1 included in the budget? If you do need one included, do you have a preference for one or the other?

  • Yes, I will be needing the OS. I prefer 7, but will take 8.1 if that means being able to upgrade to 32gb down the line.

Again, I really, really appreciate any input. Thank you all.

Why would you recomend an i7 to a gamer PC? i7 for gaming is a waste. They do the same sh*t as an i5 when talking about gaming. He better spend more money on the graphics card than on the CPU lol

Go for a 970 or a 980 if you have the money in my opinion

OP wants also lower cost. 970 is $337, 2x 770 is $416

Man, you guys are awesome. Yeah, budget is $1200, so I'd prefer to keep it around there. Although, if the extra $80 makes a huge difference, I may have to find some wiggle room to get those dual graphic cards. Are my expectations fair, btw? Is $1200 good enough to build a decent machine?

Intel processors have 2 threads per core for i3 and i7 and 1 thread per core for i5 which makes the i3 virtually a quad core and the i7 a 8 core. Whereas with AMD it is the opposite there is one thread for every 2 cores which makes a quad core a dual core,6 core a 3 core and 8 core a quad core Which is why intel is better

Ahhhhh I'll just delete my opinion since you gave it no thought. Have fun with your rig when you spend $1200 and still can't play it maxed out. Peace buddy :)

I'm building up my rig too. Go to youtube and watch videos of gta V ultra or max settings and see how their gameplay is.

This is my plan, Overkill I don't care.

i7 4790k 4ghz

an asus z9z motherboard, or at least a good ATX mother board that is compatible with a i7 4790k

a zotac gtx 980 or a zotac gtx titan x

1-2 tb hard drive

at least a 240gig or more ssd

a big phantom 410 case

a bunch of cooling fans.

a 16 gig ram sticks, 2x8gig

I'm probably gonna be able to play V in like june lol, it'll be so worth it.

don't get a half assed machine, save up for something good bro

What i would say is if ur a gamer DO NOT GO FOR AMD PROCESSORS.

Umm, why? FX 8000 series can keep up with an i5 on gaming. FX 6300 beats an i3 in its sleep.

Nothing beats a i7 and a GTX 980 for the above average pc gamer.

The k for your cpu is pretty much useless unless you want to overclock your cpu

You want a work horse, that can play GTA V @60fps/ultra settings, with room to run mods. Youre asking a lot for $1200 ;p

A number of problems with this build.

The CPU is a great bang for buck, not steller for your 3D work and its not the K model so no OC. Even tho you said you know nothing about OC'ing, its nothing more than moving a slider (paired with a modest aftermarket cooler, a very worthwhile purchase) and getting another 10% proformance with ease tbh. You would be mad not to avail of this, there is absoluletely no better place to spend $80 for the gains attached to it.

While the mobo isnt a part you need to spend big on, biostar is a brand I'd avoid, extremely cheap and you may find out why the hard way. Also that one is a micro ATX, which I hate unless Im purpose building a mini machine for someone.

RAM is hard to go wrong with, and the difference between speeds and latency is rather small, its a part you can spend pretty low on. 16GB of anything is fine.

SSD is fine, altho you will gobble 120GB like its not there. Your OS, GTA V and then you gotta leave it alone, coz if it fills it'll SLOW down.

*AVOID* Seagate HDD. Seriously, even if someone posts here they've used them plenty and no probs (it can happen!). AVOID. I had THREE fail on me and after looking into it, they have had several horrific batches with fail rates of up to 1 in 4!!

Ofc the 980 is a strong GPU, but with newer models very soon to launch, I find it hard to support the purchase. A 990 or an R390x, they'll cost roughly what a 980 does today and you'll be kicking yourself that you didnt hold out for it. Yes, new tech is always inc, but hardly getting a month before your sh*t is old news is called bad timing!

On the subject of waiting. A couple of months and intel will be launching a new platform. I know, wait wait wait... ^_^

And even tho I dont have much love for AMD CPU's, they are quite close to intel as far as gaming goes. But they are noticeably slower for most other things and they require that bit more juice. So Id stick to intel really. A devils canyon i5 or i7, *K* model), if you just cant wait for Skylake.

EDIT: Oh, also as for OS, just be sure your getting 64-bit version of 7 or 8. Im more of a fan of 7, but tbh, get whichever is cheaper, you'll get a free upgrade to win10, which everyone will be using next year.

EDIT2: Mistakes, which Im blaming on a new KB! And I forgot to stress not to cheap out on PSU. Never used the brand mentioned, but have read reviews which were positive. I usually use Corsair or Seasonic when possible, Antec earth watts is stellar bang for buck without being too cheap also. 650W is minimum for a rig with a SINGLE strong GPU (there was talks of SLI from others, I dont like that route, but be aware it will mean a bigger PSU should you go there).
