WTF is going on with the grass?

GTX 970. i5 4690 @ 3,5gHz. 8GB ram.

When I am in Los Santos the game runs at 60fps almost constantly, but then I go to an area with grass FPS go down to 40 or so... (Franklin's first house gets really unstable), and when I go outside los santos it is IMPOSIBLE to go at 60 fps. Before asking, I have grass texture on NORMAL, so I think it shouldn't happen that.

Does this happen to you? Is there a solution? I hope Rockstar fixes the grass problem

Even people with high-end rigs tend to bring down the grass detail from Ultra to Very High.

In-order for grass to look realistic - Your GPU will work hard.

Try turning it to low, or well..... Invest in a new GPU?

I had a similar issue on my sig rig, my framerate would split in exactly half near grass spots, disabling and enabling v sync back on made it go back to 60 all the time (on those same spots), I think alt tabbing works too; It's probably a bug.

GPU? I'm not an expert about PCs, but if I want more stable FPS I need another CPU, not GPU right?

This game uses 6+gb of ram for me, looks like were all going to need to get 16gb of ram soon.

The grass fps however really makes no sense, Far Cry 3 and 4 has a sh*t ton of more grass compared to this game and didn't lag like that.

I still think this game is an unoptimized piece of sh*t and it should run better than this.

And my pc is worse than yours op with, 660 and 3570k.

GTX 970 @ i7 3770k, runs on 70-80 everywhere except for smaller areas with extreme amounts of foliage.

I disagree, it seems to be working very good for most people, I know, in my case at least, I can achieve constant 60fps on very high settings, something that was impossible in IV. :)

OP: Give my suggestion a try!

There is no doubt it's better than IV, however i struggle to believe something which looks worse then arma 3 and has less players and probably server side scripts (Altis life) Can run worse than arma.

that much foliage is GPU and CPU intensive.

With one of my 760 running, i get 50-60fps normally, as soon as enter any area with grass, it drops to 20-30 fps. Turned on the second 760 [sli], 50-60 fps no matter what is done, explosions and smoke all in a heavy grass area, no change.

running an I7 4770k, 16GB ram, and 760 sli 2GB on 1080 res, high to very high settings, MSAA off.

maybe its your MSAA, weakening it, turn that off.

Bitch Ass Bullshit

Ya its a bug. I always toggle Shadows settings from Very high to High and then back to Very high every time i start the game. It then get backs to 60 fps on foliage areas

We should submit a ticket support to R* and explain to them about this issue; I see a lot of people complaining about performance near grass spots, I wonder how many of them could fix it this way.

I am with you on the grass issue, occasionally fps drop to 30 for a short while near grass.

So what is your workaround you recommend? tab-out or change settings twice?

I have a GTX780 and I don't have any FPS problem when in grass area, not even when at farms.

And setting of grass is Very high.

What I do is turn off v sync, go back to the game, go to the graphics menu again, and turning v sync back on (it seems like there's no triple buffering near grass spots :O is that even possible? Im asking because when I do this fix, it drops to around 58/57 instead of 30) V sync without triple buffering cuts your framerate in half when it drops below the refresh rate, even it it's 59.

I'm not sure if that grass problem can be patched to improve performance but I hope that it can

Lowering the grass settings is not a fix because why would anyone want to do that?

It looks awesome and adds A LOT to the realism and visuals

GTX980 here, I just use adaptive V sync and still have around 40 fps in said areas.

Still with GTX 980 you shouldn't be getting only 40fps

For me it was the MSAA, I turned it down to 2x and it made the frames much better when around grass.

Do you have TXAA on also or just MSAA?

And what about Tessellation, Ambient Occlusion, and Post FX?
