Transferring from console to mid-range. My little adventure *pics*

DISCLAIMER: All below PC shots look a bit fuzzy compared to how it actually looks. So, take em with a grain of salt. They're not bad, just not 100% representative. Say 90-ish.

 

So, first up a little bit of history.

 

I started playing GTA 5 on the Xbox 360. That died.

 

Switched to PS3 and got my online character to level 25.

 

Switched to Xbox One, transferred and played on until level 31.

 

Since most of my friends are PC players, I decided to switch platform 1 last time.

 

My specs:

 

Core i7 2600K stock

16Gb Kingston non-gaming RAM

480Gb Crucial SSD

Pretty dated 7850 2Gb overclocked well within safe margins.

 

So all was well, I fired up GTA. Before going online, I had to do the prologue mission which I already knew by heart.

I used this mission to start tinkering with the settings. I had FRAPS on for the fps monitoring. Default was around 55 fps indoors with Very high textures, rest high, no MSAA.

 

It looked like this:

After that, I updated the drivers to 15.4 Beta

 

I left the settings as they were and did the first Franklin mission. Fps was around 60-70 outdoors, in-car!

 

Met a stranger:

 

Friendly as I was, I greeted him

 

So, after messing about in SP and further tinkering, I got it to a stable 70-80 FPS while in the city.

Resolution: 1920x1080 @60Hz

Vsync off

Textures Very High

Shader High

Anisotropic set to 8x

FXAA on

Grass density High

Population density/diversity around 80%

Water quality High

Water Reflection Normal

Shadows Sharp <- Here's the kicker, Sharp shadows drastically improves FPS although you would think otherwise.

 

I was 200 MB outside of my GPU's 2GB "comfort zone" but it still ran smooth as butter.

 

Right, character transfer:

As soon as I went online, it asked if it could search for previous linked avatars.

 

Sure enough it found 2, my level 2 char and my precious lvl 31.

 

I transferred my online thug without problems:

All in all, I can say only one thing:

They delivered one hell of a port, everything worked. Not a single error, nothing.

 

In this day and age, that's a rare thing.

 

I will upgrade my GPU to say, a R9 290X, but since it runs that well on my older GPU, there's no rush in doing so. It will be purely for more eyecandy (AA, more tesselation, denser foilage etc), I won't be needing it to play the game smoothly, because I already can. At a steady 60fps minimum.

 

Yup, I traded in quality for performance.

Great thread! I was kind of in the same boat. I had it for 360 played it until I met "Chop," then realized that the game had way too much to offer for my struggling 360. So I waited patiently until it came out on PC! Minus a few bugs/glitches, it has been a jaw dropping experience. I remember booting up Far Cry 4 on PC thinking, wow, this is awesome. Then I did that prologue mission in GTAV and was stunned. If Rockstar ever ports Red Dead Redemption for PC, I'll be in heaven!
