I had a chunk of my right thumb cut off years ago in an industrial accident and I am sh*tty with a game pad for aiming because of it. PC version came out and I'm Full Free aim with my mouse. I gotta tell ya I'm way more deadly now. Auto aim is not better unless you have some type of problem that prevents using free aim. Use whatever you like but auto aim is no advantage if you have no handicap that is causing you to use it. I'd never have kept playing the PS3 version without it.
