I think Donald Trump jumped the figurative shark and ran straight over to crazyville with his recent statement about barring Muslims from entering the US. It's literally one of the most prejudiced and downright inhumane things I've heard a politician say. It just doesn't make sense from any sense of the imagination.

I'm done with laughing at Trump.

He's put himself in a position to be extremely dangerous for many Americans, and he doesn't give a f*ck.

I can't help but laugh at the commentary in the media that he will lose support now. As if this is really any different from him saying a week ago that we need to go in and arrest everybody in the mosques and shut them down, and create a database of Muslims. He'll only go up in the polls or at the least stay the same.

And to add to your comment; he's not going to slow down. He's riding this through whether he looses or wins, and if he wins some scary times up ahead awaits folks.

Obama doesn't have the power to decide who is allowed to run for president and who isn't. He wiped his ass with the constitution, now he's reaching back into the toilet to see if there's something written on it that will help him fight Trump. There isn't.

They are f*cking scared.

To be fair, Obama has killed more innocent muslims than Trump. He only calls them collateral damage.

Trump didn't disqualify himself, lol. Gotta hand it to them, though, they are being creative.

Love all these reactions to Trump's comments about not allowing in Muslims. All people can do is cry "racism" and "hate", like holy sh*t don't you get it, that doesn't work any more. Get a new tactic already. Can't stump the Trump.

People are justifiably angry at, or at least baffled, by Trump's rhetoric. Proposing that Muslim immigration to the US (a nation founded by and enriched by immigrants over the centuries) be stopped is ridiculous and wholly against the ethos of the country. Islamic extremism is certainly a problem but this isn't how you curtail it. I doubt it will lose him much support but that doesn't make it a clever thing to say even if it is just rhetoric.

Trump is purposely trying to destroy the Republican party so that Clinton is guaranteed to become our next elected president. Of course, I'm only kidding, but would it really surprise you? Some of the things he says, I swear, it's as if he's begging not to be elected. And watching conservatives squirm around, not being able to take Trump down, is actually kind of entertaining. He really is changing the face of politics.

In a way Trump baited the media, and you can argue that they've taken it too far, he can use that as fuel. It doesn't make what he said correct, but it's not going to hurt him, IMO.

It's not the foreign Muslims who are trying to get into America that I'm fearing for. I do feel it's our duty to take them in, as we've done for countless other people. But first and foremost, I fear for the impact his words have on American Muslims, who already have it bad with the bigots who f*ck with them on the regular. Now we have Trump demonizing Islam, and in these people's twisted minds justifying hatred and possible violence. On top of which, it's not impossible that some poor lonely Muslim child will be beat down, and hurt, and made to feel like the enemy, so much that they will become radicalized. If not a radicalized Muslim, then just some kid who becomes disenfranchised with the US and starts shooting up a mall.

His words have impact in the minds of people who might see them as a call to action, and don't mean one that leads to voting, but to violence against innocent people.

And he doesn't give a f*ck. All he wants is the Whitehouse, and doesn't care how he gets there. He's manipulative, and dangerous, and he'll never admit to being wrong, he's too pig headed for that. If someone goes off and attacks Muslim Americans, it's on his head, and he would just continue to smile, and have his sh*tty combover, and indirectly influence people into hate.

People are joking that he's like Hitler, that might be a littlest far fetched, but he's definitely headed in the opposite direction that the rest of the civilized world is, in terms of ethnic bigotry.

Also f*ck all the Republicans claiming we are at war. We are not at war. ISIS has never attacked the US, no matter how much you want the San Bernardino shooters to have been under their orders. Even ISIS, said they weren't. (I think...)

We've been at war with 'terrorism' since 9/11. That will never change. Unfortunately, it's a war we can't win, because how do you kill hatred? There will always be someone who wants to do harm to America, which is why I get sick and tired of hearing conservatives tell us we need to bomb the hell out of this, or bomb the hell out of that. I mean, I get it, the best defense is a good offense. So I'll put that aside. But refusing the admission of a religious group? That's giving into groups like ISIS who want us to be desperate and afraid. I just don't understand Trump. He says this makes us stronger, but a divided America isn't a united America. We're going down a path I'm not comfortable with, and it doesn't even matter if Trump wins. He's helped foster hatred in this country, whether it was his intention or not.

It's not a tactic, it's a statement of facts. Donald Trump is a racist. It's not even subtle.

The interesting aspect of Trump is not what he says, but rather the reactions to what he says. GTA_stu is focusing on the completely wrong reactions.

It's far more interesting to note that Ted Cruz has so far not denounced Trump. And Cruz has a far more likely chance of being the nominee. And he's a prick.

It's not so much that particular statement, though it was idiotic. It's the now pretty much unquestionable descent into outright Fascism. I just find it utterly perplexing that any proportion of the American population can support what it basically Mussolini in a baseball cap, given half of these people still lord the role the US played in defeating Nazism over Europeans at every opportunity.

Of course the whole is a massive coup for the Democrats, because the front-runner holding about 25% support amongst the 20% of people who see themselves as Republican supporters is hated by about half the American population. I bet they're printing Hillary Clinton presidential business cards as we speak.

Correct. Trump is a racist, but stating that fact will not make him go away because his supporters are also racists and there's a lot of them.

Democracy isn't perfect. If racism is what the people want then racism is what the people get.

Good thing he's never going to actually win a presidential election, even if he does by some miracle get nominated.

It's nothing. It's just a White House spokesman describing his and the President's disgust with Trump's statement, while using a pseudo-constitutional argument that Trump clearly cannot uphold the constitution with those views, despite the fact that Trump's idea is actually not unheard of in US history.

Three times since its independence has the United States barred people from immigration purely based on their nationality, race or disability. CBC reports:

First was the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882 (which wasn't repealed until 1943, when China became an ally in the Second World War), which barred Chinese people from immigrating into the United States.

The Immigration Act of 1917 barred quite a bit from the so-called "Asiatic Barred Zone", which includes India, Afghanistan, Persia, Arabia, parts of the Ottoman Empire and Russia, Southeast Asia and the Asian-Pacific islands.

And there was the Immigration Act of 1924, which was designed to bar most people from Eastern Europe.

Sure, they were not barred based on religion, but I don't recall Irishmen being popular in the 19th century and that was purely because they were Catholics.

And apparently none of these acts were considered unconstitutional, so why would it be now? Trump is not disqualified.

Oh and, the CBC article also reports two Canadian cases. CBC is generally a good source on US news.

I can be fairly sure about it. It's simple mathematics.

20% of individuals identify as Republican. 25% of Republicans currently support Trump. Therefore you can infer that trump holds the effective support of about 5% of the American voterate (is that a word? It is now).

The pundit who has a 99% success rate at predicting state outcomes in US presidential elections since 2008 has estimated his chance of winning a presidential election as somewhere above zero but below ten percent. I like those odds, as does anyone else who isn't batsh*t insane.
