Typhus all I'm gathering is that you think patriotism and nationalism is more important than acknowledging facts, or more to the point, that focusing on the negativity of our history doesn't do anything positive for us as a county?

It doesn't.

It's a guilt trip. It's a shameless, transparent guilt trip. How's it worked so far? Does poking a bear really made it more pliable?

 

I think it's working pretty well, although I don't really agree with the idea of it being a "guilt trip". Oh sure, there are people who have reason to feel guilty about it, and people who want to capitalize on that guilt, but there are very valid reasons for people trying to raise awareness of these kinds of facts. School kids are taught to believe that our country is the greatest, most free country on Earth, that we have some kind of unparalleled human right's utopia and that any other country has severely limited freedom or are simply totalitarian nightmares. The "guilt trip" is trying to fight such a patriotic ignorance because where do you think that will get us? Think about that movie "The Interview" with Seth Rogen and James Franco. If you've never seen it, don't go out of your way it wasn't that great, but anyway as you can guess a large portion of the movie is talking about N. Korea's intense propaganda campaign. Yet very few people ever also acknowledge or question whether or not that movie is in fact our own propaganda. There's not a fostering of distrust for no reason, it's to encourage people to be critical thinkers.

 

Going back to Columbus day, I think it's kind of an interesting thing because what exactly did this holiday do for our national pride before? Well, first of all it made us look globally ignorant since other cultures already had strong evidence that other explorers were here before Columbus, so let's not even bring up his folly about not finding India. When people talk about how this lead to the genocide of indigenous people, they're usually thinking about the Native Americans later on as if this weak link of "Well if Columbus hadn't come here, then we wouldn't have wiped out the Indians." Well the genocide really started much earlier than that, I don't have the time to recall specifics but there's basically native islander cultures in the tens of thousands that were wiped out when the first Spanish explorers began landing. Later on, with America's role with "Manifest Destiny" there's a loftier link to Columbus, but it seems a lot more rooted in fact than Columbus "discovering a new continent". I mean how ridiculous is that to teach to children in grade school, "Oh, this one man discovered the New World, and all these pilgrims went over there..." only to find out "...ohh but there were already some other people living there, so they all ate dinner together and eventually we killed them off and put them on reservations." Long story short, if people don't want the facts as they are to be taken and used as some kind of "America is awful and based on a bunch of lies" then maybe we should stop lying to them from cradle to the grave.

 

What I don't understand is... If all this disillusionment of our history is supposed to be used as a tactical advantage, then how is it being applied? Are leftist/leftish politicians getting more votes because they're appealing to what you sense as the guilt ridden populous? I mean, I'm not trying to put words in your mouth here, but that's almost like you're saying things like the Black Rights Matter movement aren't supported because people think it's wrong, but because they just feel guilty about it. That whole "white guilt" concept, but applied unilaterally through a myriad of other issues. Just "American Guilt".

More guilt, more shame, and, ultimately, more people rejecting their message because of it. They want you to hate yourselves.

 

I think the middle ground here is contempt for those who bash their own heritage for short term political gain among groups perceived as being the other. To be fair, most actual left leaning activists and whatnot are pretty explicit about what they want from elected officials especially. Rejecting one's heritage is never such a demand. I mean ffs, we are speaking English and are constantly exposed to European-heritage composers, authors, film directors, political figures, and even activists. This so-called guilt trip is really just the harsh reality of democracy. It's a push back on the existing dominance of cultures that only make up a portion of the human experience. n fact, the world's cultural, legal, and financial center of gravity is still firmly Eurocentric for now. You act as if the good aspects of western culture are being ditched with the bad.

 

 

 

And more generally, @ any attempt by conservatives to link American black rights movements w/political correctness and white guilt. African Americans are probably the least PC cohort in the US. Haven't people ever heard of Paul Mooney? You can keep the guilt, black folks want reparations.
