Thanks a lot for the supportive words guys :)
I apologize for the delay, lot of responsibilities catching up with me.

Unfortunately I may have to pass on the hosting of these competitions to anyone else who wants to do it (in their own format and everything)
So let me know if anyone is interested, otherwise the competitions may come to a pause for a while.

No need to apologise AkLeMo. You run these brilliantly and I enjoy entering them but your decision is totally understandable.

I'm in two minds whether to put myself forward as a possibility to host these. I'm not quite sure i'd do it justice and it's a time commitment which is becoming an increasing issue for me.

I think i would also be tempted to roll this into GTAFilmClub and maybe extend rounds to Twitter followers too (or maybe not), but I think this might get some people's backs up as it is a GTAForums thing.

I think someone else / co-hosts would run it better. Maybe a hiatus might be good in order for people to work on their own unique projects for a bit. I know i have quite a few that need finishing up.

My suggestion if anyone else takes over would be to extend rounds to a month, giving more people chance to enter and work on their own projects.

My condolences to you mate.

Just noticed there is another pinned topic above this one called GTA Video Gallery, where people are posting machinima / editor content in there, but not here. The only difference is that topic contains all types of GTA video content too. Confusing.

Yeah I think I browsed through there once a while ago. Seems a lot like a place where people mainly come to dump a video, not much discussing it seems to go on sadly. Not sure how much posting a machinima there does for your views. No harm in trying I suppose

I think everyone completely understands about the time its taken to get this one out, after whats been going on in your life AkLeMo. You don't have to apologise for that.

I do think that its a good idea for someone else, to take over hosting (temporarily though, so the thread doesn't lose momentum. As hot as a thread can be, they always die if they lose momentum. I think it's a good idea for someone to stand up and take control for a while, until you're ready to come back and get right into it again. You do a pretty good job AkLeMo, so I don't think anyone actually wants to take the job from you.

Am I correct in thinking SirJohnnyStalk also stil runs this? It sais he is part of the R.E.W.C staff in the round brief. What are your thoughts?

Just an idea here. What about keeping everything mostly the same as is now, but each of the regulars takes turns to host a round - they choose a topic, write the brief / graphics, etc. Maybe the winner of a previous round gets to host the next round as an extra incentive / prize.

Not sure how you would decide between PC and Console winners to host (Draw or something lol). Maybe if someone didn't want to host it, they could pass it on to next place (2nd)

If SirJohnnyStalk is up for it still, maybe me and him can sort the votes (collected by PM). This might work well as a temporary solution until / if AkLeMo wishes to return to hosting. I think this would be managable.

Proberbly someone would need the "winners" banner template and to update this too.

I agree it would be a real shame to see this topic / comp lose momentum and die.

Well, I would want to be still part of the staff, and help out wherever I can.

My only problem is, that I am not that good in english. And since AkLeMo did a brilliant job in writing the texts etc, I would be very happy, if someone would help write and post texts of announcements etc, to maintain the quality.

The banners would be no real problem to do, I think

I could help write the round briefs / announcements and post them if that would help, assuming you wanted to choose each rounds topic idea. Graphics is not really my thing.

How do you feel about each regular participant taking it turns to host a round or the winner hosting a next round i.e deciding on the topic? I honestly can't tell if that is a good or bad idea, but I don't mind pitching in to write the brief / announcements.

If you are writing, means a lot to me, thanks.

Graphical things is up to me... as always I will continue provide the topic-screenshot.

and whenever needed, I will do graphic-work.

Well about deciding the topic: it actually is a nice idea to let the winners decide (or maybe give them the chance to help developing a topic together with us judges)

What exactly do you mean with "hosting a round"? just deciding about the topic, or also do the writing stuff etc.?

So an idea for example would be the 2 winners of the current round (PC and console) get to each put forward a well thought out interesting topic suggestion, one they think themselves and others would be interested by.

We could both then decide on which of the 2 ideas to go with for the next round, maybe develop the topic a bit if required, or merge the 2 ideas if they could be.

I guess it might be good to maintain time / seasonal specific topics too e.g christmas time.

This is the only way I can think to do this to keep some consistency like AkLeMo maintained.

I would then be happy to write and post the round announcement brief if you could supply all the graphics. I guess this takes the pressure off a winner to write the whole brief themselves.

Then when votes are cast by PM to me and you, we could figure the winners order on Skype or something (Not found your username btw)?

Anyone else have thoughts or ideas on these competitions? Is everyone happy with the current time frame for each round (biweekly)?

Then if AkLeMo wishes to return to this at any point, I'm happy to be a participant again.

I understand you having to take a break AkLeMo ;) But it might be good indeed to keep the momentum going. How much I would like to enter each competition, I probably won't be able to do so for a little while now due to a lack of time. Still making machinimas though, so that is good. And I will keep posting here, looking at all the other vids and all that good stuff. I also would like to keep voting on the competition ;) So whatever you decide, I support it & will keep visiting here!

Then there is the issue of animating characters sat in the back (can they even aim weapons like they do in the scene?)

I also really like the tunnel scene which i'm pondering using the mine shaft / sewer tunnels, trying to figure if i can make it feel like one plausably leads into the other, as the mine shaft is tiny.

I liked how in the film it felt claustraphobic and then it lead to a warehouse but i can't figure how i could do this with GTA V locations. Problem is with lighting. Mine shaft it too dark and the flashlight just doesn't cut it, but my usual trick won't work because all characters are moving through the tunnel.

I did a little bit of experimenting to see if I could get actors to use 2 handed weapons like assault rifles and smg's while in a car (similar to what they do in Sicario). Definitely haven't found a 100% working solution yet.....but it might be a step closer.

What I did was this. Use Scene Director to set up a bunch of actors that sit in a car (I used an SUV). Have the driver assigned to drive from A to B using Scene Director. 1 of the passengers (the one that aims / shoots) will be played by yourself. Do not have him enter the vehicle, but instead use Menyoo to attach him to the vehicle that is being driven. Then use manual placement to position him in his seat. OBviously he won't be actually sitting on it, but instead stand... in the air/ground/vehicle with his legs clipping through the bottom of the car. From a distance this looks retarded. But for close ups it sort of works.

Now you can actually aim and shoot out of the window while the AI drives around for you. But there is a catch....I wasn't able to do a proper full 360 turn with aiming and shooting. I could on my screen, but the character didnt actually do it. Seems to have been limited to 90-140 cone infront of the car. Most likely the actor was colliding with the car somewhere preventing it from rotation further. I tried to use the disable collission on my actor with Menyoo, but it wouldnt let me activate it for some reason (icon stayed red). Another catch is that the camera while playing sort of bugs out and got stuck in the roof of the car, making it very difficult for me to actually see what my actor was doing. In the editor you can of course set the camera yourself, and then it is ok. But preferably you'll want to see it in game as well, as to not give the passenger next to you a wet willy with the barrel of your gun.

I'll experiment some more on this later, but if anyone else wants to look in to that, let me know what you find! ;)

Interesting. I'll have to experiment with this. Cheers.

I don't plan to make this shot for shot, but incorporate many of the elements and dangerous tone (hopefully)

If you watch the scene here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TU9L_MAfp3c

I reckon i could pull of the method you suggested because the car will be static, with the person in the back aiming / looking out the window (interior car shot), then cut to them getting out the vehicle / stood outside of it, aiming at the other car. It might work.

I had also wondered about simulating bodies hanging from a distant perspective. Not sure if there are any straight line rope / chain props that i could attach peds to with the correct static animation so that from a distant perspective, it looks convincing. Lots I need to look into first.

Tbh that project will be a big undertaking and my first big machinima (well excluding my horror "Abduction" which still needs completing at some point), and if anyone else pulls off a sicario-esque gta film before me, I might rethink my ideas.

FixingGOOD and Lt Nucky, are you using external animation software, or is this all PC Director mode functions? Im using PS4, and the limitations are ridiculous. I've almost bled Director mode dry with what you can do physically, in the acting and dialogue side of it. I've only just decided to experiment with voice overdubbing, but at the moment, I'm uploading completed videos to Youtube, and then downloading them, so I can edit audio on PC. Do you guys have any advice, if you know a better way?

Im about to embark on a 10 episode project, and I'll need all the help I can get. Once I upload the first episode, you guys will see what I mean. Its going to be a mammath task.

As for the Abduction horror you're working on, how is it coming along? I finished pretty much exactly that idea a week ago, after reading the 'Hunting for Secrets' thread.

We both use the Scene Director mod for the pc version (as well as some other mods). That way you can use animations that npc's use at scripted moments during the storymode in your videos as well. Both physical animations like moving from cover to cover while holding a rifle, and stuff like facial animations.

See this is why Im happy that the video competitions are judged separately for PC and Console, because they're so different.

PS users are so deprived of functions. Even just the simple ability to place NPC's (let alone animating them) is one of the biggest downfalls.

You have to rely on the compliance of the NPC's that randomly generate (albeit in their assigned locations). You can work out where specific NPC's do generate, and you can utilise that, by reloading the scene over and over, until you get them wearing the attire you need, but its tedious, and it makes creating videos more like grinding than creating. I think I should buy a good PC honestly, and just quit my complaining haha.

Well it's not like Rockstar dumbed down the possibilities of the console version. It's just that people themselves can add options for the pc. People put a lot of time & effort in to these mods. But they don't always work a 100%, and usability wise most could use an overhaul as well. I think the amount of people using all these features (mods) is relatively low, so it probably is not worth the time & money for Rockstar to put that all in + actually polish it so it works & looks like an actual part of an AAA game. I hope that each new Rockstar Sandbox game will make the Rockstar Editor grow further, with even more options :)

This really ^

Also I imagine the development studios after pc release would have wound down their work / resources on GTA stuff which is mostly about online DLC anyway.

I agree there should have been certain things implemented in director mode which wern't. That said, if you really want to do fleshed out GTA machinimas, PC is the way to go imo, just for the precise control and editing possibilities.

LT Nucky. Am I correct in thinking that to add little previews at the end of a video on YouTube e.g click to watch episode 2, with a little video preview playback box, you would do all this in editing, then just add a transparent overlay in YouTube that hyperlinks to that video.

I see tons of people do this but not exactly sure of the process?

Yeah I assume that is how they do it. Obviously you will need some footage or a picture for that following episode ready to use while finishing the first one so it is all there when you upload it. You can then use the Spotlight annotation to overlay. It comes with a box to shape around the video frame for example, and a bar for text.

You just throw a video(s) you've already done in at the end. Most editors will give you the option to resize it so you can display it or more videos properly and add any text if necessary.

Youtube then has the annotation feature which will let you draw a box anywhere that links to wherever you want (another video, subscribe, etc)

There's really not much else to it. You could use Photoshop or something similar to create a template tile if you want.

Nice one. Yeah i figured it would be something like nesting a video inside another video and resizing. I've never used annotations in YouTube before but sounds simple enough.

Btw, loved the Matrix short Duggly. It made me laugh.

I know i keep asking tons of questions in this topic now (sorry), but interested to know whether any of you keep your high quality file exports after you complete a project?

I have a bad habit of holding on to lossless renders of my stuff (but deleting fraps footage), but starting to think its pointless and keeping just the MP4 (What i upload to YouTube) is sufficent.

Thanks :D

I hold onto my projects / final footage in case anything happens my Youtube channel or if I want to go back and revisit something like a Behind The Scenes episode or re-edit a video.

I really should delete some of it though, I'm just hoarding a lot of it :p

I'm keeping all the original files as back ups as well. Never know when it might come in handy. Plus external hard drives aren't that expensive nowadays, so it's not much trouble for me to keep it all.

Huhm...some strange stuff happened. Installed several mods for cars. Decided to take them all for a test drive 1 at a time, recorded footage for each to make sure no weird stuff happened to them in the editor (looking weird from a distance or whatever). But turns out from a certain moment all the video clips recorded in that session are corrupted or something. Whenever I try to play the, or edit them after adding to a project, GTA crashes. Anyone ever had something like that happen? The first clips from that recording session are fine. But from a certain point on, all of them make GTA crash. Videos recorded in earlier sessions, or later, work just fine.

Gonna have to figure out if this is just a random occurence, or one of the cars triggers it for all videos from that point on....Definitely don't want this to happen on important footage, since I can easily spend a full day just doing recordings, and not checking it till I edit the next day or so. Imagine everything from a full day's recording being corrupt.....I'd go Hulk irl!
