This is BLUES.

Bukka White. Recorded 1963. No amps, no rock shredders. Just a man and his guitar getting down.

Heaven.

On a side note, for you blues fans. I host a 5 hour radio show in my area. It's focus is on traditional acoustic and electric blues without all the rock crossover crap.

It's an old school approach to the blues that's been award nominated locally in less than a year of me doing it and we do podcast it from the facebook page.

Shameless self plug: ;)

Spinning this bitch right now. Top tier Texas acoustic blues from 1948 - Little Son Jackson. Jackson is a complete badass.

Have any of you ever seen an original blues 78? LOL

Side note - I can't stand Robert Johnson. Never have been able to. But I LOVE acoustic delta, hill country and and prewar blues. Johnson just is so f*cking soulless and rock dweebs like Clapton worship him. I don't get it. I did like many before me, their first introduction to pre-war blues was Johnson. Honestly, he turned me off for a few years because I was like 'if this is pre-war blues, I don't get the hype.' It almost stopped me from going deeper into the blues. Then I heard Son House, Charlie Patton, JD Short, Kokomo Arnold and Skip James and my world changed forever. Johnson's just a gateway and I haven't spun Johnson for my own listening pleasure since I can't recall when. I play him on the radio show because I have to. I make sure though I pull from deeper non-cliche Johnson tracks.

Side note 2: Achyls that ain't blues. That track above ain't blues to my ears. Rock performers playing what they think "blues" is. These modern rock players playing "blues" is a joke. Just because they do a song that has some blues elements and they "feel" it a little bit and play some cords it doesn't mean it's classified as blues. Blues is serious, deep and only people who make it their life's work and artistic choice get to fly under that banner by my standard. Just like academics. Just because you think you're smart you don't get to own that label without earning it and living it. And yes, Clapton, Bonamassa and Stevie Ray Vaughn ain't blues either. Rock guys stealing elements of the blues, but mostly living in the rock world.

Samantha Fish ain't blues. I've seen her. Rock set. Trashing the blues every time she plugs in. No authenticity all. I am constantly pointing out the distinction about fake rock infused stuff vs. deeper stuff that IS blues on my blues radio show.

You need to go back to school and differentiate between rock infused nonsense and BLUES. Blues ain't just chords, there is a depth, a history to it... and if you play you better respect that history. If you bring rock sensibilities to it, it stops being blues.

This IS Electric Blues. Real stuff. No phony short skirt crap or Joe Bonamassa garbage. .

A modern female artist I like is Sophie Malbec. She makes Samantha Fish look like a empty short skirt. Malbec comes at the blues from the right place and she's in touch with the depth of it, where Fish isn't.

Belton Sutherland.

LOVE LOVE LOVE this guy. Just a man.... weathered as f*ck, doing his thing. Deep as hell. Dusty porch, hand rolled cigarette, cicadas in the background. Rusty strings and alternate tuning that melds with him. PERFECT.

ok dumbass, I'm not about to have an argument here about blues music.

the beautiful thing about the blues (and music in general) is that it's not a dictatorship and one person doesn't get to define it for everyone else. the blues has many shades. it's not just one style.

rock and roll blues is still the blues.

it doesn't have to sound like it was recorded in 1935 in order to be called "blues" music. that's the evolution of the sound, the evolution of the electric guitar, and the evolution of the underlying themes. everyone I've posted in this topic is true blue whether you like it or not...

Dumbass?

Straight for namecalling. Nice.

Short skirts hocking rock still ain't blues no matter how you "want" it to be. She's a joke along with the rock hacks and will always be. Anyone who accepts her and that stuff as blues doesn't really get the blues. You're just buying veiled rock marketing with no authenticity. It doesn't have to sound like 1935 to be authentic. Look at Byther Smith or John Primer both modern stuff. There's more to blues than chords and a bit of "feeling." It's cultural, there's a history and it's a story of an experience of a people. You are buying the structure argument and that rock is part of blues, that's that the consumer mentality wants and it's wrong. It disrespects the blues and waters it down to where it appeals to rock people. Rock is the bastard depthless stepchild of the blues. Blues is so much deeper. That's why Fish and those rock wankers dumb it down to chords to sell to rock consumers. Sell some sex and take the soul and depth out of it. All the things that make blues special get nuked. It's becomes a mockery of the people that were real and lived the blues.

See, I can call you out without calling you names.

I will say you have no taste in blues though. You're a rock person and that's the problem. You're frame of referernece is to listen to blues is through rock and that's wrong. You must listen to blues prism and then view rock through it. Then you see what a commercialized trashing has been done to the blues to appeal to the rock crowd. You look silly pushing rock nonsense as blues. Any blues scholar would laugh at some what you posted above.

But the modern record companies love you because you only view the blues as a structure and ignore the depth. They can profit of you. It's all about that guitar solo, man! Blues isn't about LOUD, blues is about expression. The best stuff often has space and openness to feel and breathe. It's not about an army of guitar effect pedals.

Like I said, you need an blues education rather than calling people dumbass. Listening to rock first f*cks up your frame of reference. You have to listen to blues as played respectfully authenetically to get the garabge that's just wanting to hock sex appeal or guitar shredding to appeal to your rock sensibilities.

You keep posting trash, I'll keep calling you out.

Top Notch modern stuff

Love the space in the music. It breathes, it feels. Soul for days. Excellent!

I like the first track the most, but the subtlety and depth that are the hallmarks of the blues are here in spades.

Straight for namecalling.

yes well you're the dumbass who thinks they own the blues and has the right to tell everyone else what the blues is and what the blues isn't. news flash dumbass: you don't own blues and you don't get to define it for other people. sorry. not sorry.

the blues is the blues regardless of whether or not it conforms to your ass-sniffing definition.

Interesting how the music evolved but the influences are strongly eminent.

well apparently it's not interesting if you ask this wanna-be college professor over here. talking about "blues scholars" like a pretentious little sh!te who thinks this is a classical studies university.

why the f/ck did you come here to argue with other people's choice of music?

this is not what the topic is for.

if you don't care for someone else' taste in blues music, then just post your own and move on.

Does this discourse really need to be so nasty?

It's cultural, there's a history and it's a story of an experience of a people.

It's interesting that you make this rather apt observation...

Rock is the bastard depthless stepchild of the blues.

...and then make this statement. I'm curious to what defines "depth" - especially when discussing a term as broad as "rock"

blues scholar

don't be this guy

an blues education

Could you please elaborate?

You keep posting trash, I'll keep calling you out.

You certainly wont be bullying anyone in to what they can and can't post based on your subjective parameters of what is and isn't blues.

Nobody will be be name calling either. This topic will continue and I want to remind everyone that they can post Blues music they like freely without risk of ridicule. Anyone making future inflammatory remarks will subsequently be warned or taking break from the forums for while.

Now lets play nice people.
