Zapp 1,655
Blues is a genre and musical form that originated in African-American communities in the "Deep South" of the United States around the end of the 19th century. The genre developed from a fusion of traditional African music and European folk music, that incorporated spirituals, work songs, field hollers, shouts and chants, and rhymed simple narrative ballads. The blues form, ubiquitous in jazz, rhythm and blues and rock and roll, is characterized by the call-and-response pattern, the blues scale and specific chord progressions, of which the twelve-bar blues is the most common. The blue notes (or "worried notes") which are often thirds or fifths which are flatter in pitch than in other music styles, are also an important part of the sound. Blues shuffles or walking bassreinforce the trance-like rhythm and form a repetitive effect called a groove. *Merged this topic with new Blues Topic. El Dildo 14,384
what the hell, only 2 replies in a month? the blues are the music that almost all forms of modern American pop is derived from, not to mention a myriad of other styles around the world who quickly picked up on (and expanded) the sound coming from the Southern Mississippi Delta after the turn of the last century. in short the blues are f*cking awesome and anyone who doesn't appreciate it doesn't understand it or it's place in music history. and stuff. old blues via RL Burnside: new blues via Patrick Sweany. never gets old. El Dildo 14,384
well when you talk about the evolution of music in general, I just don't think that most young people care or are ever made aware of the roots that give branch to the kinds of music they enjoy today. there are groups and artists who get it but they're hard to find and don't seem to pick up much attention from the Billboard record groups that control the radio and awards shows. is there even a blues category at the Grammys anymore? it's still being produced. both in original form and through homage. prime example. the old the modern re-tooling

Zapp 1,655
Way better than the Nirvana cover. (not saying Nirvana is not good)
Mister Pink 12,215
Yeah, the vocals are really haunting. I've come to prefer his rhythm and timing on the original too. However, I do like Nirvana's cover and even choosing the track to begin with.

El Dildo 14,384
sad news, but also expected. he was recently placed in hospice care which is where you to go to die, not recover. I've seen BB King twice. once in St Louis and once in Chicago. this was the early 2000s and he was already in his permanent seating position (fingers and voice hadn't faded) but I really wish I could've seen the man in his prime. truly a virtuoso of the guitar itself and the blues style of playing and singing.

El Dildo 14,384
let's not just make it about BB King though. have you guys ever heard Magic Sam? one of the most underrated blues vocalists of all time. I wish I could sing this good, that loud, with that much soul and control. guitar solo starts @ about 2:40 and just gets out of control from there. crank up the volume for maximum effect. I love Magic Sam. Edited May 20, 2015 by El Diablo

El Dildo 14,384
does anyone like John Mayer? when I was growing up I thought I hated him because he just played high school pop crap. but deep down, and as his later recordings show, he's all blues at heart.
