Possible to require a password on USB HDD?

Recommended Posts

I think there's a feature built right into Windows OS called BitLocker.. plug your USB or storage device in and right click on it in the My Computer section. Should be able to access BitLocker there.

The way it looks is Bitlocker is only on Windows 8.1 Pro and Windows 8.1 Enterprise editions.

I think mine is the home edition as i don't see the option for it when i looked though My Computer and when i did a search i followed the steps on Microsoft Website and it's not showing up so i don't think i have it.

Try number two or three. I think somebody already recommended you to put a password on all the files and it's not what you're looking for :^:

You could use something like FreeOFTE to build an encrypted partition.

Yeah and putting a password on the files doesn't prevent it from being deleted.

That's kind of why i want the password for the stick itself

You could try one of the many TrueCrypt alternatives? Or TC itself if you feel brave...

It's been recently audited and marked as good to go and is still available on some swiss domain or various githubs. I would say its still the go-to method if you're really worried about your data.

Note that someone could still just format your drive no matter what you do. You can't really do anything against that
