Instead of an ocean surrounding why not

the sad thing is, if the ocean wasnt so detailed we might have gotten a much bigger desert and it might have been in a geographically correct locationjjrczd.jpg

so basically north in V is south in reality ...

LA is still south...

No, the salton sea is south. Sandy shores is based on salton sea and it is located north of los santos.

I know, I mean the general area of LA is still in SoCal. I know the Salton Sea is a lot more south IRL, I'm just saying LA is still southern.

A desert surrounding Sandy Shores, it can be as infinite as the ocean but if you go to far you start to dehydrate the more you walk or your car stalls cause of the heat. Or wolfs eat you at night. It makes sense since it be more realistic than an ocean in the desert

Planes.

/thread.

They could do it like it was done in Saint's Row 2, when you get too far out the map the game simply rotates the plane back to the game area.

Well Liberty City in III era had the connection to the mainland, two tunnels entrances leading up to the main one leading outside of the city.

Plus there were hills and invisible walls so the player could not walk or drive past them. But it did gave out a nice vibe that LC is connected to a bigger world.

Now I see that would be nice in V case, more moutains and forests to the north and desert to the east side of the map. It would've been a bunch of non-solid textures of trees, sand etc. like RDR. But giving the scope of the map and how much stuff there is I don't thing last gen would be able to handle it.

Plus since VC, GTA maps have been islands. And R* kinda stuck with that formula.

Well it looks like V's Los Santos is based more off of San Diego.

I like the idea, but would just prefer like closed off roads and tunnels like in GTA III, leave a little bit of mystery as to what's beyond the map. Maybe even a small town or village beyond the boundaries so you can look but not touch

How about NPC vehicles/pedestrians being able to pass through the barriers? What's your opinion on this?

The thing is that Rockstar has used water to define the end of the game world in all their 3D GTA titles, and I guess they're pretty comfortable doing it that way.

I guess it's sort of an easy way out, and not a very creative solution, since it makes every game world into an island as opposed to a state that's on main land.

Los Santos and Blaine County is obviously supposed to represent the L.A and Orange County part of California, which is not an island. But I guess it would be difficult to work in a solution that didn't include invisible walls.

As for the water issue, if it ain't broke don't fix it is my honest opinion. Nothing I really put too much thought into and it doesn't really have any impact on the gameplay experience.

Wouldn't it be cooler if eventually, you just went back around if you flew too far into the ocean? Like a mini planet?

I'll rather have that, than the current system.

That could work too, Crimson.

No, that was only on multiplayer modes. You could fly out "forever" on single player. You will drown from being in water too long, but that happens everywhere.

I like the current map design in terms of how the boundaries are dealt with.

Current? Thats been going on since GTA 3 lmao.

V is the first GTA game that tries to kill you if you go too far, via killing the engine on your plane or sinking your boat, leaving you to get killed by a shark.

Just imagine how better that would be if it happened in the desert. Your car engine over heats forcing you to walk out where you characters health slowly decreases. And it would have taken up less space that that ridiculously detailed ocean floor.

Its grand theft auto not grand theft submarine

It's Grand Theft Auto, not Grand Theft f*cking Safari.

Pretty sure IV killed you as well.

It did. The game blew up whatever vehicle you were in instantly.

Really, you can fly infinity long out of the boundaries? I tought your wings will fall apart?

I think all of us should stop complaining about to make the map bigger or better and be grateful for what an amazing job R* did on their map of a great game.

I don't really see how having an infinite desert instead of infinite ocean would really change anything. Don't get me wrong, it's a neat idea, but I think procedural map generation could be used much more effectively. For example, creating a very large area of forest &/or desert, allowing Rockstar to focus in on hand crafting a city situated within.

The map isn't amazing. The layout isn't very good. The countryside is basically a crater with a road going around it. Plus, half of the area inside the crater is a damn useless sea. With an island map surrounded by water, do we really need more water taking up so much space in the middle of the countryside?

Nope.. it's a stupid idea and here's why: You'd have a big city, few smaller towns, mountains, rivers, lakes etc... and all of that IN THE MIDDLE OF AN ENDLESS DESERT???

How does that make sense? This way at least it looks like a full island with all the natural features. Even maps like Liberty or Vice feel pretty much natural when you reach the end and it goes to the beach and then the ocean.

You'd have to have TWO boundaries, one being the ocean for some of the map, the other being the desert for another part of the map, otherwise you wouldn't really have Los Santos on an ocean shore, it would be a lake instead. It's much more simple, and looks really good the way they already do it.

Because that is how it is in real life. Los Angeles is quite literally right next to an endless f*cking desert. Besides the ocean on one side of the massive city, the rest is all desert. Have you heard of the drought that is going on? They've literally had meetings discussing the possibility of having to evacuate California in coming years.

Interesting idea OP. The desert in SS is ridicolously small compared to the whole map. It`s too cut by the roads and give no sense of isolation whatsoever.

But maybe we`ll get to see the real desert in RDR 2. A guy from IGN forum sent a suggestion to R* very similar to yours. About the huge desert, isolation and overheating the character.

They responded to him that they are considering about it for one of their next games. And that game could only be RDR.

The desert in GTA V needed to be atleast twice the size, with less roads going through and with some aditional deadly animals such as the rattlesnakes, spiders and scorpions.

While I know that the map could use a lot of improvements, I also recognize that the limitations had to be adhered to. Whats the point of having the most amazing map ever if no body can load it?

That's not what could have been. That's a fan made mad that's about 3-4 times bigger than the original.. yeah, it would take about 2-3 more years just for the map to be made that big with their amount of details, not to mention the missions, peds and everything else.

Then someone added the desert on that fan made map and honestly that looks ridiculous with the desert. The original fan made map (without the desert) looks great.. but this, this makes it look like a small patch of grass in an endless desert. Note quite as good.

I'm glad other people feel that the desert is really strange. it's just plopped in the middle of all of this greenery and abruptly cuts off the grassland. It's small and is just...there. I don't even see how a desert could form there in the first place. Rain shadow? But then why is there a sea right before it...?

That map is not pratical, the desert itself is bigger tha the rest of the state, i can't even begin to imagine how much people would have complained about it.

That map is beyond stupid, the desert itself is bigger tha the rest of the state, which is stupid.

Then I'd like to know how would you portray an infinitely generated desert in a map. Go ahead and show us.

I wouldn't, i'm happy with the game as it is, is it perfect?, not even close, but when you have over 22 years of gaming on your back, you already know that game won't be perfect.

I'm probably much more happy with the game than most of you here, simply because i didn't hyperhyped myself for years, like most of you.
