JStarr31
Look it's like this, in every GTA since III, the map has been made into an island to represent the portion of the area that is familiar to the protagonist. Even IRL, I ONLY know an 'x' amount of my state/city, so if I where to draw a map of the only areas within my city I know, the map would look a lot like an island with the 'water' areas being the unknown. Thus this is how GTA maps are meant to portray a region. Even though the rest of SA actually exist and is most likely attached to V's island mass by land, we have only the represented area of the map that the protagonists would know (or even care about, that's why Yankton seems like there's an ocean between the states when really it's just water being used as a metaphor for unknown, unseen, or otherwise not cared about areas - unless otherwise noted as a lake or river, etc) So the map of GTA V is just a piece of land "broken off" of the rest of the state for gameplay purposes, mainly because crashing your jet plane into an 'invisible wall' going full speed would just be the worst.... Also computer generated land isn't R* style, every inch better be hand-made or go to EA with that sh*t... Ben73
Nope.. it's a stupid idea and here's why: You'd have a big city, few smaller towns, mountains, rivers, lakes etc... and all of that IN THE MIDDLE OF AN ENDLESS DESERT??? How does that make sense? This way at least it looks like a full island with all the natural features. Even maps like Liberty or Vice feel pretty much natural when you reach the end and it goes to the beach and then the ocean. You'd have to have TWO boundaries, one being the ocean for some of the map, the other being the desert for another part of the map, otherwise you wouldn't really have Los Santos on an ocean shore, it would be a lake instead. It's much more simple, and looks really good the way they already do it. I'm not sure how a small island in the middle of the ocean that has millions of people living in it with city, towns, country side and desert, but is still a part of one of Americas largest states is more realistic than an endless desert on one side. ten-a-penny
I dont understand how people say im trolling i put up an image of what the desert would look like surrounded by water. but im a troll because of it, because fanboys take issue with someone talking bad about thier game. And krysalis you are an idiot. Las venturas and san fierro are in the state of san andreas, no where did i mention southern california. It's because you can't post a single thing without calling people fanboys. It's just a shame there's no opposite word we can endlessly throw at you whenever you post, really.Troll works for now.You are a fanboy. so is krysalis. You get butthurt everytime someone talks badly about gta v.Sums up this section. Right. So everyone who disagree with you is a fanboy. Right?? RIGHT?!?!? A-Wax8
the sad thing is, if the ocean wasnt so detailed we might have gotten a much bigger desert and it might have been in a geographically correct location so basically north in V is south in reality ... Computer generated land wouldn't be any worse than the hand-made areas that are covering a large part of the map... But that's a last-gen screenshot.... I don't get it, what is your point? I KNOW you're aware that the ground textures are not like that on current-gen and PC.... So if computer generated land is, at best, like the last-gen ground textures then, yes, take that sh*t to EA especially if thats what we'd get on current-gen/PC. I prefer the ocean because of my above explanation (which came straight from the horses mouth) and makes perfect sense to me.... Anything else would be forced or an immersion breaker. L.A. isn't surrounded by desert only, so to ensure immersion isn't broken, you'd have to auto generate multiple types of terrain, not to mention the coastline, which in IRL, isn't just beach coast.... N.Y. also isn't surrounded by just any land/terrain, you'd have to computer generate mountains as that's the surrounding terrain and once again, not to mention, generate the swampland and marsh right outside of New Jersey/Alderney along with an infinite river to separate the mountains from the swamp... Seems like extra work and counterproductive. on top of it all, it would give the player the impression these cities are just one-off places in the middle of a barren state, when in reality there are other cities within the respective states, for instance, Red County still exists in the HD state of San Andreas. If you to implement infinite land, where and why hasn't the player reached any signs of civilization or Red County? I've been driving north and yet, nothing. Same if I drive east, nothing. Where is LV? It be more headache than its worth and plus the roads that'd have to be generated as well. The real problem is the detailed ocean floor... That's what should've been computer generated and not infinite land. The ocean floor should've been more hand-made desert, forest, and city on the map and then they should've computer generated an ocean floor around that Edited April 1, 2015 by JStarr31 The Dedito Gae

You have problem with that, but having the southern part of a state completely isolated and surrounded by infinite water with no sign of the rest of the state is okay??? That doesn't make any sense. The best approach would be to have both infinite water and infinite land and have the player die if he ventures too far away just like what happens now. theGTAking101

My own damn imagination sure as hell isn`t worth the $70 or however much I paid for the game! Plus I bought a PS3 so I could play V, and all that money was really real! Not at all imaginary, if they accepted imaginary money then it`d be a fair exchange I reckon!

Zanje
I actually would like this idea, it would be a nice change of pace from the individual islands we have always been getting. Plus a desert to just mess around in would be fun for a while. Maybe something like this? Lock n' Stock
V is the first GTA game that tries to kill you if you go too far, via killing the engine on your plane or sinking your boat, leaving you to get killed by a shark.Pretty sure IV killed you as well. It did. The game blew up whatever vehicle you were in instantly. How far out/how many hours did it take for that to occur? In my experience, that never happened to me. Same with me, I flew for like half an hour in an helicopter and I never died. In GTA IV, it only kills you in multiplayer mode (displays a message like "turn back or suffer the consequences"), in the singleplayer you can go as far as you like. TimMiller
In GTA 3 and Vicecity you suddenly turn around, when you fly or drive too far in the direction of the ocean. I remember flying a tank with the comeflywithme cheat in vicecity and wanted to leave the map, but i couldn't because i got turned around every time. In SanAndreas the ocean is endless, you can fly for hours with the Hydra Jet. If you view the map, SanAndreas becomes smaller and smaller and all you see is the ocean lol MaddenedGhost and Koger
ArmyRaidFail404
I was had the idea of surrounding the map with mountains that you can't just simply walk over, or drive over. Something too steep for land vehicles. I know that this probably wouldn't work with GTA, but with any other open world game, this is golden. KingpinRCR
Not quite California though, right?Sorry, my bad, I forgot California is an island and not a state with ocean on one side and a landmass on the other... What's your point? A game based on southern california, surrounded by desert is impossible, but a game based on southern california surrounded by ocean is the only way to go?And why do you keep crying about california? You do know that the games is located in southern san andreas, don't you? As far as i know that is a fictional place, so anything goes...
