Krysalis
http://40.media.tumblr.com/feebf0fb31ac396efb2057d0783a8191/tumblr_mz6k8hWMHH1sq1114o1_1280.jpg Is that California? Wouldnt surprise me if he says it is. Obvious troll is obvious. This was the idea I had a while back, replace the water on the east side of the map with infinite generated sand. It would make more sense though if Rockstar used their heads and put the desert and Alamo Sea to the east of LS, where it should be, but it could still work. For the north side they could put infinite fields of grass or something, and leave the west side as water. The infinite desert would be an amazing place to test out cars. this idea is perfect, not only does it provide more fun in game but it also makes sense geographically speaking. i cant imagine that gta v los santos is connected to a bigger state and leads to las venturas and san fierro. its just so poorly made and circular that it feels more like hawaii and not a portion of a state San Fierro and Las Venturas are not in South California. Go back to 5th grade. it would be great if they focused on the city, making it detailed and everything. but then when it comes to the country side they could do something like what they did for the game fuel and make it massive. just imagine a country side like this, massive. GTA V has more things going on than Fuel. Use your logic. theGTAking101
Ok, here's my idea. Of course it's not the best, and it's asking for a lot, but like I said, it's just an idea. - Paleto Bay is still at the top left of the map, and there's an actual bay that resembles the Monterey Bay, and the land to the north will just be infinite generated grass fields. - Most of the east side of the map is desert, and the Alamo Sea, Sandy Shores & Grapeseed are in the geographically correct locations to the east of Los Santos. - Mount Chilliad is north-east of LS. and there's a forest surrounding it. Mount Gordo is more north and is more like a long mountain range and has a small isolated town just north of it. And the small mountain range east of LS is to divide the city from the desert. - A few small towns scattered around the map, and a medium sized city in the middle of the map. - Paleto Forest and Raton Canyon are much larger, and there is a lake that connects the 2 rivers in the forest, and just below Mount Gordo. EDIT: I updated the map: Edited March 31, 2015 by theGTAking101 lastmanonearth, Che Guevara_187, ManularChimera and 2 others
WillyDope
Wouldve been dope to have to the ocean to the west, south, and southern east of the map and just to the north, north east have a stretch of endless desert....would vary it up abit

Edward Nashton
A desert surrounding Sandy Shores, it can be as infinite as the ocean but if you go to far you start to dehydrate the more you walk or your car stalls cause of the heat. Or wolfs eat you at night. It makes sense since it be more realistic than an ocean in the desert I'm not sure about the survival mechanics, they would seem better fitted for another game, the next Red Dead, perhaps. Having an infinite desert or forest would be awesome but I feel the technology isn't there yet, I know people have rattled off a few pc games that feature infinite landscapes, but GTA games are very complex with many moving parts and have a minute attention to detail, I can't imagine a game having all that and a never ending wilderness. We might see something like that towards the end of this generation but not any time soon.
KingpinRCR
Nope.. it's a stupid idea and here's why: You'd have a big city, few smaller towns, mountains, rivers, lakes etc... and all of that IN THE MIDDLE OF AN ENDLESS DESERT??? How does that make sense? This way at least it looks like a full island with all the natural features... A desert with a big city and some small towns around it, sounds like Las Vegas (i'm sure there must be lakes, rivers and woodlands the more you reach the border of the desert. on top of that, there probably are more examples) An island with a big city and some small towns around it, mountains, woodlands, rivers, lakes and a desert, sounds like.... Fudge, no example for this on this earth unless you count continents... So, OP's idea isn't that far sought. Someone said that it wouldn't count for planes since it isn't hot in the sky. Well, they do fall out of the sky for no reason now, what's the difference? Planes can have enginetrouble over water, but not over a desert? @hyperar: desert surounded by ocean? --> the red sea is completely surounded by desert, Australia is mostly desert completely surounded by ocean, i think it isn't that weird... just-a-spaz
I like the current map design in terms of how the boundaries are dealt with. Current? Thats been going on since GTA 3 lmao. V is the first GTA game that tries to kill you if you go too far, via killing the engine on your plane or sinking your boat, leaving you to get killed by a shark. Just imagine how better that would be if it happened in the desert. Your car engine over heats forcing you to walk out where you characters health slowly decreases. And it would have taken up less space that that ridiculously detailed ocean floor. Its grand theft auto not grand theft submarine What's to stop you from spawning a Comet and driving more? Does it instantly break down?

Ixnay
I think it would be cool, at least in part of the map. But as suggested, go too far and you'd pass out, which might be better than the "invisible wall" thing. Of course, if you're wandering around in the desert, I wonder how you'd magically end up in the hospital. Then again, I wonder that sometimes with the map as it is. I think it would be much cooler to come back near where you die, with maybe paramedics there. I mean, I doubt every time I've "died" someone was around to call for help. Well, think about it, Imagine a city as complex and intricate as, say, HD Liberty City or Los Santos; subway systems, highway systems, hundreds building's, traffic and pedestrian AI etc. on top of all the resources needed to render the graphics, plonked in the middle of a procedurally generated desert or whatever. I'm no expert, but I think the power required to have such a thing would be astronomical, even by PC standards. I know there are some space sims out there that can create immense universes but I also know there's a lot of sleight of hand going on and I've yet to hear of one that has large cities as complex as the ones in recent GTA games (correct me if I'm wrong, anyone). I could see infinite deserts in a game that uses an engine similar to the 3D era GTAs, though, but I don't think we'll see something like what the OP and other people mentioned in at least 5 or so years, upcoming games like No Man's Sky and Star Citizen show promise, but I'm still very skeptical. Edward Nashton
"Why can`t you have both? Infinite water on one side and infinite land on the other??" Good Question. As far as I know, there are games in development that have similar ambitions but right now there's a lot of skepticism about having hand crafted sections seamlessly blending with procedurally generated maps, I wish I knew the technicalities, but from what I've heard this is some years away. I really would like to hear from someone who's better informed on the subject as to why that is. Edited April 1, 2015 by Edward Nashton

You will drown from being in water too long, but that happens everywhere.
