Motions Blur?

Under Settings> Display there is an option for 'Motion Blur Strength', maxing that out seems to 'smooth' the framerate slightly (PS4).

How long has this been an option??

*edit* Realised the title says Motions instead of Motion...

It's been there since the heist update. I tried it at max and at 0 and honestly could not see a difference, but that's just me. If there is a difference it's certainly not a big one.

Yeah when I did my change to max. I didn't notice a different from it.

I've tried maxing it and I can't see any difference in anything either. Could be glitched, and not working as R* intended it to. I was thinking it might be like the blur effect from GTA IV when you reach high speeds to make it look like you're going faster.

There is a slight blur effect when crashing your car and when turining the camera rapidly. Thats all it is.

That's the depth of field option that can be turned on and off and has been there since the new gen version was released.

Depth of field is when things in the foreground are clear and the background is blurry. No motion involved. Edited by Mach1bud

That is true, but turning off the depth of field option turns off what you described. It's as if crashes and extreme motion changes affects focus briefly, hence depth of field changes. Don't blame me - I'm not Rockstar :p

Yea the blur effect from IV especially TBOGT. I remember doing the story mission No.3 where you steal the cars for Mori. I somehow hit 280+ mph in the Bullet GT, and that car wasn't even equppied with the nitro. When you do the nitro races in story mode and MP, the only thing you see around that car is blur, and you're probably going 400mph lol.

That is what motion blur does. It affects focus because you are moving rapidly. It is working as intended.

Some people are having trouble comprehending here, so I'll put it very clearly.

There is an option in the display settings that has been there since the new gen version was released. It is called "Depth of field". If you have it enabled then when you crash (for example) there is a brief shift of focus where your character becomes the main focal point on the screen, and the depth of field is altered so that the background becomes out of focus. This can be turned off by disabling the "Depth of field" option. As far as I'm concerned Rockstar could have called that option "Kwisatz Haderach". It does what it does, regardless of the name.

Now, in the heist update there was a new and totally unrelated option that was added, called "Motion blur". Turning this up fully or down to 0 does not affect the previously described "Depth of field" option or the results of it.

I'm not just spouting this as opinion. These are facts based on my experience of actually using the above options. I have done this and that is what happened.

Okay?

NB: Depth of field also comes into play when scoping with a sniper rifle, as your focus changes gradually when moving your view, rather than everything always being in focus.

I don't think you are really aware how much "depth of field" is actually used in the game. It is always in play & depentant on what you are focusing on or aiming at, So for example, if you focus on something nearby, like a car or building the distance will blur out of focus.

I'm 100% aware of it. I have no idea where you got the notion that I'm not. Please stick to the topic at hand, which is motion blur, and not "you don't know blah blah blah". Thank you.

You are actually wrong, though. I play on PC. I see the "Depth of Field" option, but it's grayed out because my GPU isn't beefy enough. So I can't even turn it on. But I do see the momentary blurring effect from crashing a car at a really fast speed. You previously stated that that effect was due to the "Depth of Field" option, but that cannot possibly be true.

I've messed with the "Motion Blur" setting at various levels and the only big difference I notice is that it destroys my framerate and that it makes things a little blurry when I'm driving fast in 3rd person view. It does not seem to work in 1st person view, which is kinda lame.

You misinterpreted my previous post, and please quote the post you're referring to in future, thanks :)

The blur that you talk of is more of a slight distortion, but a rose by any other name blah blah blah. That has always been there, even on old gen consoles, so it's not related to depth of field. The effect I was talking about is more pronounced and clearly a blurring effect, and that is indeed turned off by turning off the depth of field effect. Obviously, you've not seen this since you can't turn depth of field on so I can see why you'd misunderstand the explanation.

I need motion blur like I need a white-supremacist friend.

I don't even have the silly "in-game depth of field effects" on.

I like depth of field in the editor, but not in the game. Why on earth would I want to take a second to focus on the guy in my scope that's already fired a shot at my face?

It does look nice though.

Oh for making videos, it's absolutely dynamic.

But for Deathmatches, it blows chunk after chunk.

Why do I want myopia when I'm trying to find the enemy?

yup I can't stand this sh*t in combat. But I always forget to turn it back on before heading into the editor. dumb that the editor is constrained to the same settings as actual gameplay.

I tried to report it as a bug, that it needs to be enabled in the game in order to use it in the editor, and (despite it actually being called "in-game depth of field effects" - IN GAME) they just thanked me for my awesome feedback and told me to suggest the change to a different email address. I removed all but 7 letters from the email and the words "f*ck off" were hidden in there.
