Randy93
Ok guys, I just returned my r9 290 and the new gpu I was looking to get is gtx 970 or r9 290x, though hearing about the 3.5gb issue on the gtx 970 kind of put's me off. Another choice I was possibly looking at is waiting for the r9 300 series to come out and maybe I can buy a gtx 980 by then if the price drops. Would the gtx 970's vram struggle in Gta V in max settings 1440p? Also would it be dumb to upgrade my i7 4790k 4.8ghz to i7 5820k as people been telling me that sli gtx 970 or gtx 980 will get bottle-necked by the i7 4790k and they tell me the 6 cores of the i7 5820k will be way faster in dx12. Anyone here that owns a gtx 970 tell me their experiences so far in games like far cry 4, dying light, bf4 at max setting 1080p-1440p?
driftingcloud
any single card will struggle @max setting @ 1440p unless you can get a titan x which still struggles but is the best single card for that res... tho if you can sub graphic detail to get higher frame rates then any of the cards you mention will do it the 970 vram problem is not one that i have had so i would have no problems in recommending it. But that said if you are prepared to wait then see what the r9 3xx from amd car coming in at

yoječ
Going from i7-4790k to i7-5820k is a total nonsense, if you're going to use the rig mainly for gaming and not for things like video editing, etc. _MK_ and Randy93

Anyone here that owns a gtx 970 tell me their experiences so far in games like far cry 4, dying light, bf4 at max setting 1080p-1440p? why did you return the R9 290?? just curious cause i have one and it will run GTA V just fine (at least at 1080p) it's way above recommended settings. yeah the 970 probably will struggle to run with only 3.5GB vram at anything above 1080p. GTA V needs 2GB for 1080p. 3.5GB isn't gonna go far. right now the best NVIDIA card with full 4GB is the 980. either get that or wait for the AMD 390/390X. i think i read somewhere than the 390X will out perform the Titan X according to leaked specs but these are RUMOURS so who knows. and yes it would be very dumb to upgrade your CPU. i've seen many computers run SLI 970's or a single 980 just fine on i5's nevermind i7's. Bonaldo
3.5 GB or not, GTX 970 is still a monster and has outstanding price/performance ratio Technically it has 3.5 GB of normal speed memory + 0.5 GB of much slower memory. There isn't even any solid evidence that it hugely affects gaming performance, even when VRAM usage by game is above 3.5. Before people heard about this issue, no one whined and everyone praised GTX 970, but when it came out to light, suddenly everyone do whine At 1080p, 3,5 GB shouldn't become a problem anyway It should be able to max out anything you throw at it at 1080p 30+ FPS for at least 2-3 years IMO So unless you plan to play above 1080p, GTX 970 shouldn't become old too fast Edited March 26, 2015 by Bonaldo
Geeteeaifive
get 1231v3 cpu and gtx 970.. best budget build. 8gb 1600 ram and youre set. or go balls to the wall with 5820k gtx 980 16gb ddr4 2400 and samsung 850 pro ssd. Im going with the latter. I expect that system to last me at least 4 years.
Randy93
I guess ill keep the i7 4790k till 2017-2018 whenever skylake-e or cannonlake/cannonlake-e come out as they wee probably have 8-12 core cpus for the price of the i7 5820k now., plus i7 5820k only gives 2-5fps in newer games and I would have to pay a minimum of 800 or so with that which yes some people on here have said it's really not worth it. As for gpu it's either gonna be r9 290x/380x or gtx 980. And yes I dont edit videos or plan to with any cpu, just pure gaming lol Edited March 26, 2015 by Randy93
Rizaki Koizumi
The GTX 970 isnt a bad card, really. It's when you start playing games at 1440p or 2160p (4K), the 3.5GB issue really will start to appear, mostly in 4K. Now needing a 5830k isn't necessary, even for SLI or Crossfire. I'd say stick with the 4790K i7 for now. Also, GTA V will probably take up 1-2GB VRAM give or take, so if you get any card that has 2GB or more, you should be set. The GTX 970, and hell, I think even the R9 290 would've been more than adequate enough for GTA V. I think though you shouldn't have returned your R9 290, but you're past the point of return... Also, what type of monitor are you using btw? I think that'd help to know that to help sway your decision. thyho
GTX 970 can run FC4 at 4k on ultra with an average of 30 fps it is very impressive, i think will be fine running GTA V at 1080p +60fps;
NaidRaida
I'm using a MSI GTX 970 4 GB and I would recommend it. It has alot power and nice functions like stopping the fans completely when under 50°C. Power consumption is very good and it's the most silent card I've ever used (compared to PNY GTX 460 and Sapphire HD7850).
philbeau
I would go with a gtx 980. I bought a Titan Black and in some games I can push the vram near the 6gb limit, while playing at 1440p. But I don't think in most games you would exceed the 4gb limit on the 980 (depending on mods and the AA you are using). If you wait a little more you could get the cut down version of the titan X (980ti or whatever they call it).
